Simone de Beauvoir's "All Men Are Mortal" tells the tale of an immortal man. Fosca starts out as part of the nobility of a small city state in Italy. After becoming king he finds a way to become immortal. He uses immortality as the chance to secure peace in his city state. He then realizes that is not enough. He must control all of Italy. He then realizes this is not enough. He must control the entire world. He eventually starts to realize that no matter how great his ambitions are he is never able to derive ultimate success in his endeavors.By being immortal Fosca loses all the virtues of being man. He has nothing to give because he has nothing to risk. He looks at everything as if it were part of the past. The entire world is the equivalent of one large anthill for Fosca.Beauvoir's point is made several times throughout the novel. "There is only one good: to act according to one's conscience." "'We don't have to count on the future to give a meaning to our acts. If that were the case, all action would be impossible. We have to a carry on our fight the way we decided to carry it on. That's all.'" Meaning is derived through completing tasks, not the completion of tasks.

I read this book while i was on a kind of "french thing" in my reading, i had read Camus, Satre and Gide prior to reading this book. I had never read anything by this author before this book. The book starts with a simple premise of a man who is immortal telling his story to a woman who wants to be immortal through him and gets into some mindbending territory from there. The brain food factor of this book is very high and i would rate it up there with the best works of Camus and Satre for philosophical weight. The story develops really well and the whole work is highly readable. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a novel that makes them think.

This haunting book is about a ruler of an Italian city-state who believes that he can make his fiefdom a prosperous and contented utopia if only he is given enough time to do so. He eventually attains the gift of immortality, but soon realizes that people cannot or will not change; rather they make the same mistakes over and over again. Giving up his ideals about making the perfect society, he wanders throughout time in a daze, which is broken only at rare points when someone renews his hope for humanity's potential. However, he watches the failure of humankind again and again, and thus his immortality becomes burdensome to the point of not being able to enjoy even the simplest of life's pleasures. What is the point of falling in love or making a friendship, only to watch people you care about grow old and die? What is the point in trying to change things when their essence remains the same throughout time? Du Beauvior dedicated this philosophical book to Jean-Paul Sartre, and it is a thoughtful, chilling look at humankind and our desire for perfection.

Another deBeauvoir's existential take on finding oneself by knowing the big other. Makes so much sense.

'All Men Are Mortal' is such a departure from her other novels I was a first taken a bit aback. One has to really enjoy learning about European history to get the full impact of what she's attempting to convey. That said, it's enjoyable on many levels, especially for a novel with an existential bent. But again very different from let's say 'The Mandarins' or 'She Came to Stay'.

The book is an amazing perspective. Super original, I massively enjoyed. It might lag for some people but the point is to understand the plight of the the main guy who is immortal; which is that time, effort and change do not exist and haven't since the early medieval period. It is also a fast track through history which is the same as it ever was.

If you like existential fiction, this will really make you think.

Only reason why not 5 stars is because the cover is cheesy. I read it as a young man in the original hardcover which left me unprepared to the historic, philosophical, romantic, adventure-filled story. In my opinion far above anything else Beauvoir wrote. Applied existentialism.
