Terrible. They used to have pictures every other page. This version for 2017 has one poor quality picture per month and all the pages are just stark white half week calendars that have nothing to do with Frank Lloyd Wright and could be in any desktop or engagement calendar

Gave this calendar as a gift and it is well loved!

Brilliant photography, really cool calendar!

So much of the historical Los Angeles has been lost to "progress". This book reminds us what a wonderful place L.A. was when the buildings were Art Deco, and the neighborhoods quaint. What was amazing to see was what was torn down to build the Hollywood Freeway. It's nice that someone has taken on the job of preserving that history in photos.

I often take architectural tours of the Los Angeles area that talk about buildings that have been demolished through the years. A few have been saved but repurposed or redeveloped. Most are gone and another structure has replaced it. I found LOST LOS ANGELES while searching on Amazon and I absolutely love the book. It's 143 pages of pictures and text on structures that have been lost. It also mentions bits of Los Angeles life that is gone such as the orange groves or the streetcars. This is a fun book for anyone interested "lost" Los Angeles buildings. Some do exist in a different form. An example is the Grand Central Air Terminal in Glendale. It served the long gone Glendale Municipal Airport that had historical ties to Charles Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart and Howard Hughes. Fortunately, the building was purchases by the Walt Disney Company and this almost forgotten gem still stands.LOST LOS ANGELES is a well-researched and documented book that will take you back in time to a very different Los Angeles.

I've only been to Los Angeles a few times, but I'm a rabid Raymond Chandler/Philip Marlowe fan. I can't think of a better companion to Chandler's writing, since his great gift was communicating the mood and feel of Noir LA....now I can literally see the times and places he described so vividly

i am obsessed with learning about los angeles's forgotten and hidden history. there is SOOOO much in even the last 50 years that no one talks about anymore! very happy to add this book to my collection. beautiful photos. i hope there is a follow up.

An amazing collection of photos with very infomative descriptions. I was raised, lived in and worked for the City of Los Angeles from 1944 to 1997. Thought I knew most everything about this great City, but this publication held a few surprises. A must for any fan of one of the world's best cities.

Stunning book! Really well written and designed with a great collection of photos, and honestly I can't believe the price! The history of this city has its own mystique, and this book captures a portion of it. Thanks!

I saw this book at my local Costco (and was several dollars cheaper than here on Amazon) and was intrigued by its many rare photos that I'd never seen before. This coming from a rabid LA history buff with several dozen books throughout my bookcases. Anyway, I put the book down thinking that I'd purchase it the next time. But in typical Costco fashion, I came in the following week only to find the book was no longer stocked. Bummer. If you're into LA history, get this book! It's a bit disheartening to see how many beautiful buildings our city has torn down in the name of "progress."

Great nostalgia for those who grew up in L.A.

In her book The Little School: Tales of Disappearance and Survival in Argentina Alicia Partnoy describes her imprisonment in the 1970's in Argentina. She was a political activist who did not like the way her government treated people of Argentina. Partnoy was determined to stand up against the government despite the risk of being arrested. Once captured and brought to the Little School of imprisonment by the military, Partnoy describes the daily torture inflicted on the activists. The captors blindfolded and tortured prisoners on daily basis. Prisoners were molested and nearly starved. The conditions she describes under which they lived were horrible and difficult to tolerate. Despite the oppression, Partnoy showed that she is a survivor by standing up to her captors and always trying to make the life of her fellow prisoners better. She cared very deeply about her cause and even more about others who were mistreated. As her friends were taken away and killed, Partnoy remained determined to keep their memory alive by wring this book and including a written case about others who vanished to ensure they are remembered. Her story is very personal and she allows a reader into her most difficult moments for which I am very grateful. This book was a required reading for a woman's studies class and I am grateful that I had an opportunity to read it.

Another crushing account -- very understated -- about the "disappeared" in Argentina. So many were barely out of childhood when they were swept up in the Dirty War. The political context is missing here, but not the humanity of the prisoners or the bankruptcy of dictatorship

THE LITTLE SCHOOL is a beautiful brilliant book in heartbreaking and heartening ways. The vicious brutality and sadism of the military regime and the guards is not detailed---mostly elided (she leaves that to the newspapers)---in a generous, clear focus on her fellow prisoners and their inner dignity. A book of striking humanity at its extremes.I think she's a great writer overlooked in the hype of American literary bizness because her story of epic, unceasing bravery in the face of terror and death doesn't correspond to stereotypes of macho and military heroism conveyed by industrial culture to the youth. Instead, her various books speak of a woman's unbreakable integrity. Partnoy's unassuming storytelling delivers a perspective on this too-common modern atrocity that is new and rare, and whose astonishing generosity of spirit is fitting tribute to her peers who did not survive.

This was definitely an interesting and easy to read story. The Little School is Alicia Partnoy's account of what she experienced, through a blindfold, when she was forced into one of the many government concentration camps in Argentina during the Dirty War. She writes about her personal experience, thoughts and the stories of some of her fellow political dissidents. Overall it was a good read and shed to light an event I knew little to nothing about. It wasn't too intense so the average reader should be able to get through it without nightmares. It is clear that she undoubtedly left out the gory details. The book went into little detail about anybody's dark feelings, torture sessions and practically nothing about the sexual assault they must have endured. Maybe this was to save the reader, maybe she felt like it would have given the torturers some sick glorification, or maybe she just wanted us to get to know the prisoners as people not just torture victims. In any case, it was definitely a personal yet light hearted way to gain some understanding of an important event in history that can always repeat itself.

Described in details what happened in Argentina during times of turmoil

The Little School was definitely a tale of survival. Partnoy in a way illustrates this novel more than writes it because she describes things with so much detail and really paints a picture in your head. Her stories are fascinating in both heart breaking and inspiring. The other survivors who went through this experience with her are described as very special people who she cared deeply about, even at times more than herself. The book is only about 130 pages with each chapter being extremely short so it only takes a couple hours to actually read the entire book and its an easy read at that. I enjoyed this book and think it should be considered as one of the better tales of survival amongst the many out there.

The idea that there are people still missing, having "disappeared" in Argentina, is a horrifying thought. Alicia Partnoy writes of her kidnapping in Argentina and her ordeal at a prisoner camp. Her time in prison detailed in this story makes you see her as such a hero not only to those she tried to help during her stay, but for herself as well. She was able to keep herself strong so that she could survive the ordeal as well as help everyone around her. She made sure on a daily basis to do things that reminded her that she was alive and functioning and she could survive. She truly is an amazing woman to have gone through this ordeal and her story is certainly worth reading.

I heard about this book through of an interview of the author on APM's The Story podcast. Her voice translated beautifully to the page. Despite the horrors she and those around her faced, she recreates the emotions and experiences in an almost poetic way. It was a short and easy read.

Very good book. Fast moving and exciting, interesting characters with some depth. A fair amount of action, but still reasonably cerebral. I am surprised by how many people seemed bothered by the recipes at the end of each chapter. I liked that touch, but, even if I didn't, I would just move on and not read the recipe, and it would not bother me in the least. I do agree to some extent with the criticism of how stereotypically bad and ugly most of the Russians are. On the other hand, it seems like many authors go out of their way these days to make everyone ambiguous, and there ends up being no characters that the reader really likes. So, in a way, it was refreshing to me to have some characters who were really really good and some who were really really bad. All in all, very entertaining, and I think I will read the next in the series.

As I draft this review of Jason Matthews' novel, Red Sparrow, a film based on the book is showing in theaters nationwide. I've decided not to view the movie. I can't imagine that any screen adaptation, however skillful, could possibly do justice to this extraordinary tale of espionage.Authentic detail of espionageRed Sparrow is not a conventional spy story. True enough, it's well-written, ingeniously plotted, and endlessly suspenseful. On that account alone, fans of John le Carré, Joseph Kanon, or Alan Furst should appreciate it. But the book rises above the level of the genre because the author has infused it with detailed, intimate knowledge of authentic espionage tradecraft employed both by the CIA and by Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service, the SVR. Red Sparrow also reveals a great deal about the SVR's structure and practices. I was so taken aback by the level of detail that I checked a number of details at random; they all proved accurate. I can easily imagine this novel being passed around at the CIA training center known as the Farm as a fictionalized (if no doubt exaggerated) account of what an officer might encounter in the field. Two central characters in a cat-and-cat gameThe Red Sparrow of the title is Dominika Egorova, a niece of the First Deputy Director of the SVR. When an injury ends her promising career in the ballet, her uncle presses her into the intelligence service, sending her first to the standard officer training and then to "Sparrow School," where she is taught seduce enemy agents. Her assignment is to entrap and recruit Nathaniel Nash, the young CIA officer who is known to be the handler of MARBLE, a high-level mole in the SVR. "Nate was one of a small group of CIA 'internal ops' officers trained to operate under surveillance on the opposition's home ground." His assignment is to recruit her once she has managed to enter his life. The result can't be described as a cat-and-mouse game. It's a cat-and-cat game, and it's fascinating. The supporting cast on the American side includes a pair of veteran CIA officers who assist and guide Nate as he maneuvers through his relationship with Dominika. There are also a sociopathic US Senator and a number of FBI agents who wander in and out of the background, all of them coming across as incompetent. (This no doubt reflects the ages-old suspicion between the CIA and the FBI.) On the Russian side, the leading characters include Dominika's uncle and several members of his staff at the SVR. One key figure there is a "poisonous dwarf" who serves as his counterintelligence chief. (He appears to be modeled on the five-foot-tall Nikolai Yezhov, a sadistic murderer who served for a year as head of Stalin's secret police. He was known as "The Poison Dwarf.") Vladimir Putin himself makes several cameo appearances.About the authorAuthor Jason Matthews' official bio on his publisher's web site is worth quoting at length: "Jason Matthews is a retired officer of the CIA’s Operations Directorate. Over a thirty-three-year career he served in multiple overseas locations and engaged in clandestine collection of national security intelligence, specializing in denied-area operations. Matthews conducted recruitment operations against Soviet–East European, East Asian, Middle Eastern, and Caribbean targets. As Chief in various CIA Stations, he collaborated with foreign partners in counterproliferation and counterterrorism operations." In other words, it should be no surprise that Jason Matthews could write a book that exhibits authentic espionage tradecraft. Red Sparrow is the first novel in a trilogy of the same name.

This is one of the best books I’ve ever read. Why?Matthews’ facility with language is amazing and precise. His writing paints images rich in color and emotion. The world-building is excellent. The humor. Hero Nate Nash has two bosses, Marty Gable and Tom Forsythe. Gable’s sarcastic remarks, belied by his supportive actions, are truly funny. Heroine Dominika Egarova also thinks of her cruel superiors in hilariously rude terms. And the Sparrow School of seductive spycraft they blackmail her into attending (“training for ‘prostitutkas’, not staff officers,” she protests) teaches a list of techniques expressed in amusing metaphorical terms. The characters are extremely well developed. There are many, but I never got confused because each has a distinct personality.Complex plotting. Matthews skillfully conveys the conflict that arises when those who give orders have different priorities than those who put their lives on the line. The intriguing plot includes plenty of violence, tricky spycraft, and suspense.I felt neutral about:Nate and Dominika’s relationship. As they are mostly separated by thousands of miles, disparate governments, and secrecy, it’s minor. The short recipes at chapter ends. I skipped over them. While not exactly abrupt, the ending is an obvious segue into the second novel, but getting there was such a pleasure, I wasn’t upset.

Cool. Very helpful. My only gripe is that the translation within the interlinear part takes too many liberties with interpretation rather than giving it to you raw; the good thing is that there are G/K numbers and a G/K lexicon in the back so that YOU can decide how YOU'D prefer to interpret the verses; at the same time, the Mounce the elder does a nice job of interpreting, too, and I find myself falling back on his interlinear interpretation about half the time anyway. This is excellent if you have the time and patience to take something like a piece of folded up paper as a bookmark and cover up the English to test yourself once you've checked each word in the lexicon (timely process but really pays off - besides, it's the WORD, man, what's the rush when you got all your life, right?). Definitely recommended.

This interlinear was produced by Bill Mounce with considerable help from his father Robert. It uses the original Greek word order but Robert has inserted the English translation of the words where they would be in normal writing. I find this works very well. The NIV and NASB translations are also given for comparison. Each Greek word used is given its GK number (see The NIV Exhaustive Bible Concordance, Third Edition: A Better Strong's Bible Concordance). At the end of the book there is a Greek-English dictionary of each word which shows how it is translated in other parts of the New Testament.More detail can be found inMounce's Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words. There is even more information in New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology: Abridged Edition. The first line is the original Greek word. The second is the English translation and the third the G/K number. The fourth line gives you the case, number and gender of the noun, or the person, number, tense, voice and mood of the verb. Bill Mounce is the President and Founder of Biblical Training and he also has a helpful web site. Those who do not require such an advanced interlinear should consider Interlinear for the Rest of Us: The Reverse Interlinear for New Testament Word Studies. The book is 24 cm high, 20 cm deep , 6 cm wide and weighs 2.22 KG. There are 1,200 pages and the print is small but I think Zondervan have achieved the right balance to keep the size manageable. I would have preferred to purchase a Kindle edition so I could use it at church on my tablet.

I've been pretty happy with it so far. It was one of only two highly recommended Interlinear Bibles according to consumer reviews and the other one in NKJ version was out of print and getting very expensive if you wanted it in new condition hardbound. The used one of that edition was in not advertised condition, so I sent it back, and I bought this one instead. I have to say, I like it, the dictionary at the back is very useful as is having both translations of NASB, NIV, and the current Interlinear version. Its also nicely bound and will give you many years of service, so I highly recommend it, especially for the money.

The format of this New Testament is really useful. I'm an ordinary woman who doesn't know Greek, but I enjoy digging in a bit for a better understanding of God's word. If I had a vote, there'd be just one thing I would change: in place of the NIV text on the left column of each page, I would prefer another version such as the ESV. It's a small disappointment because the NASB is on the right.

I purchased this book about a month ago and have used it extensively ever since. The text has a three column format: a narrow column with the NIV on the left, a narrow column with the NASB on the right, and a large central column containing the Greek / English interlinear. The interlinear is very well done. It is a pure interlinear (word for word correspondence and not a reverse interlinear), but it also complements the pure interlinear with a slightly different font which adds phrases in a more readable English word order. The result is that the interlinear can be read either in a strict Greek to English word for word correspondence or as fluid English phrases. Under each Greek word is a grammatical key as well as a number that corresponds to the Greek dictionary in the back of the volume. Mounce uses numbers that are different than the traditional Strong's numbers, but the Strong's number is given in the definition for those who might use other tools that are indexed to Strong. One of the most helpful features is a listing in the dictionary of a small number of other references in which the Greek word is used. While not exhaustive, I found this to be a useful short list which offers the opportunity get a quick snapshot of how the word is used in other passages. The only downside is size - while not much larger than a large bible, it is bulkier than a simple Greek text or compact interlinear (great size for the bookshelf or study, but a little large if you are in the habit of carrying both a full size bible and an interlinear). In summary, if I wanted to study the New Testament and could only have one book, I would choose this one. FYI - a little background on me to put this review in perspective. I took Greek in seminary several years ago. I remember key concepts, but am not able to read the pure Greek text without assistance. This book is perfect for those with a Greek level similar to mine. I would think it would be helpful to a purist as well, though some may find it a bit cluttered with superfluous information.
