Although, I don't remember exactly what I read in this book, something must have rubbed off because I quit working at a job that wasn't aligned with my purpose and was actually costing me to get there, only to find a better paying job, but then wasn't a healthy environment, but instead of staying, I left much much quicker than it normally would take for me to realize it wasn't worth it.I didn't really try to stay and "work it out" or "deal with it" and then I finally just left the industry altogether to find something perfectly in alignment with me and my ultimate goals. I found that job a couple months later and when hired, I was given a raise on the spot, which as a serial under earner was a huge deal.Along with this, I've been reading Secrets of Six-Figure Women, also by Barbara Stanny, Mindset by Carol Dweck, and a book called Unleash Your Inner Money Babe by Kathrin Zenkina.
This is my second Barbara Stanny read. I guess you could say I am becoming a fan of her work.When I read the title, I asked myself if I too might be an underearner as my whole adult career has been spent in the public sector with its designated pay bands assigned to each employee classification. I suspected I was so I felt I could probably benefit from the author’s five step plan to a richer life. While the author writes primarily to benefit women, I suspected that anyone who read the book could benefit from it, so long as they took the actions suggested within it.Based on what she was learning from her research of six figure women, the author began leading Overcoming Underearning workshops. This book grew out of those initial workshops. As a result, this book is full of exercises, quizzes and opportunities for self-discovery and practice. If you do these, I believe this book can have a real impact on your life.This is an excellent, well written, engaging book. Because of the interactive nature of the book, I would recommend you buy the paper, as opposed to, the electronic version, so you can take full advantage of the interactivity offered.I particularly liked the author’s focus on the need to address the mindset or mental aspects associated with living a “richer†life. As the author noted, her own beliefs were holding her back.Read this book. Do the exercises. Don’t let your beliefs hold you back from living the good life.
This book resumes the experiences of Overcoming Underearning workshop participants and some of their follow-up stories.The introduction takes account of Barbara Stanny’s story as an underearner, all her struggles, until she figured out the five-step plan to overcome it.She states how anyone can earn a six-figure income, and still be an underearner; therefore, financial independence is the focus.You can ckeck a list of symptoms of being an underearner with Underearners Anonymous. However, Barbara Stanny believes underearning is a symptom per se, and it is a consecuence of low self-esteem, or lack of self-worth.It is uncomfortable to bring all that’s not working to the surface, and heal. Furthermore, change, and new opportunities are waiting for us to transform our mindset, and clean the clutter.This book is useful if you are thinking “it is time to make more money.â€, but you don’t know where to start. Through series of exercises, visualizations, and journaling, Barbara Stanny examines all the barriers that kept the underearning. It’s not a magic pill as it requires outer and inner work.
This is, hands down, one of the best books for women about money. As a financial coach myself, I've read dozens of books on money and it's rare that they are so clear and focused and give great actions to take. I recommend this books all the time! If you're struggling with underearning, start here. You won't regret it.
Overcoming Underearning was referred to me for a women's discussion group. It would've been easy to breeze through the book and put it down, life unchanged. Talking it over revealed glaring personal thought habits. Doing the questions with accountability was most effective. It's work but worth it. I did make life changes. I re-designed my life to a more compatible focus. This took time and more training. Baby steps begun several years ago have given me a new direction.Ginger, WA
This book comes from an authentic and recognizable way of living that many of us have incorporated into our daily lives that has never served us well. In an informative format with lots of short poignant stories as well as testimonials, the book also comes as a workbook where thoughts can be written and assignments can be wrangled. Having a journal nearby for some of the projects is a great idea. The book tackles our adopted attitudes from our earliest experiences towards money that has affected our lives and asks the right questions (with guidance) so that we can decide the next step to change our thinking in understanding our VALUE in this world where we are paid for what we do in our expertise.I was so impressed by the layout and format and ideology, that I sent a copy to each of my children. It's an opportunity to have them see what they may have inherited from their parents that needs to be updated as well as to confirm their value mindset in this world and to be well paid for it.
This book is one of my favorite to date. It's practical, to the point and immersive...rich with exercises and key distinctions to help you see you, your dreams and your money in a new (and BRIGHTER) way. My biggest takeaway thus far is that underearning is a mentality, that me AND my dreams are worth it, and that that we have way more control over our lives (and our wealth) than we realize. I HIGHLY recommend to anyone looking to up their money game in a big way.
This book is so incredibly good. You will recognize yourself in so many pages. It will bring you life! I just started reading it and I've decided to leave my low-paying crappy job and pursue a $20K salary increase! I'm done working for crumbs and mistreating myself.
