Review

“A brief but sensible entry in the abortion wars.”—Kirkus Reviews“For anyone interested in a fresh, balanced perspective on abortion law and women’s rights.”—Library Journal, Starred Review“Drawing on her fascinating journeys into the abortion-hostile territories of El Salvador and Oklahoma, Oberman gives a penetrating analysis of both the power and limitations of laws governing abortion. This beautifully written and thought-provoking book offers the reader a novel way to consider the endless abortion conflict in the United States and elsewhere.”—Carole Joffe, author of Dispatches from the Abortion Wars: The Costs of Fanaticism to Doctors, Patients, and the Rest of Us“Oberman shows us that that in the midst of war, there is always space for listening. In her global journey through abortion laws and ideology, she brings us back to what really matters: sharing stories that help us recognize our common humanity. In our time of increasing polarization and politicization, Her Body, Our Laws demands a new path forward on abortion, one rooted in the difficult conversations we need to help us connect across our differences.”—Aspen Baker, author of Pro-Voice: How to Keep Listening When the World Wants a Fight and founder of Exhale“This is a splendid and important book. Oberman brings a legal scholar’s attention to analysis of the abortion wars, along with a powerful gift for telling the stories of those intimately involved. In so doing, she illuminates not only what is at stake in our debates about abortion law but also what is missing from them.”—Debra Satz, the Marta Sutton Weeks Professor of Philosophy, Stanford University“Oberman lays bare the messy and paradoxical realities of abortion that churn beneath the reductive debate over its legality. Stories gathered across borders and decades depict lofty ideals of morality and choice trampled by concrete oppressive conditions far more compelling than the letter of the law. As she astutely observes, abortion’s legal status matters little to those robbed by structural inequalities of dignity and volition in their reproductive experiences.”—Jill E. Adams, founding executive director, Center on Reproductive Rights and Justice, University of California–Berkeley School of Law

A major breakthrough in women’s reproductive freedom has been brilliantly described and documented in only 174 pages! The author, a lawyer and keen social scientist, personally travelled to the places to do her research with first hand interviews with her subjects. Thus the reader almost feels as though being there on the ground. She asks questions but is ever respectful of the opinions of others which are frequently at odds with hers. The bottom line: this powerful book makes clear to any reader that obtaining an abortion due to safe drugs gives huge numbers of women worldwide the option of deciding when pregnant whether or not to carry the fetus to term! This is a massive potential step forward for freedom from religious intrusion into a decision which should be a woman’s solely!!This new capacity of women worldwide to deal with unwanted pregnancies represents a breakthrough comparable to the famous Pill. However, in carefully reading the book, I found it regrettable that this serious social scientist did not insert a strong call for expanded use of contraceptives, which would substantially prevent the need for abortions. Since half the births in the USA are unplanned, provision of more birth control knowledge is obviously needed.

"What happens when you make abortion illegal?" Beautiful, limpid prose about a contentious subject. Law professor Oberman carefully supports an interesting thesis: that abortion law is actually largely beside the point in the debate over abortion rights and morality. She examines the lives and motivations of women who choose abortion and presents the data showing that abortion bans have next-to-no effect on actual abortion rates, and only a hypothetical effect on women's reproductive decisions. Oberman interviewed women, policy influencers, and lawmakers all over the abortion divide, and makes a brilliant argument: that women make decisions about pregnancy and abortion based on a rigorous cost analysis. She examines the law and public policy that make abortion an easier choice for the most marginal women. The most impressive thing about Oberman's book is that she took the time to meet, speak with, and understand those on the other side of the divide over choice in America, and found much to admire and agree with. This book gave me hope that if more people read her book, we might begin to quit shouting at one another across the ideological divide, look at the data, and begin addressing the actual sources of the reproductive wars.

The most informative book regarding abortion, and the exceedingly dangerous things that will happen if a certain group of delirious fanatics get their way: overturning the Supreme Court's decision in "Roe vs. Wade" [January 22, 1973), and the methods which sensible citizens can take to prevent this from happening. If it does happen...well, no one - even those who were responsible for getting it overturned - will NOT like what follows. There will be a "domino effect" that they - foolishly - did not see coming. (Can you say "Fascist State?")

Looking for a good book about abortion politics in the wake of the Kavanaugh confirmation to the Supreme Court? If you haven’t seen it already, I would recommend Michelle Oberman’s book, Her Body, Our Laws: On the Front Lines of the Abortion War from El Salvador to Oklahoma. The book is eminently readable, relevant, and now available in an inexpensive paperback edition. Oberman is a legal scholar with a social scientist’s data-driven sensibility and sensitivity. She interviewed women in El Salvador who suffered heart-wrenching reproductive tragedies and were then persecuted, convicted, and jailed for allegedly provoking abortion (which is totally illegal in El Salvador). Oberman then moves to Oklahoma to ask a pointed and pertinent question: what will actually happen if abortion is outlawed? She cuts past the questions about morality and religion to explain what will happen, concretely, if and when the courts ban abortion. As you know, we are now closer to that possibility than we’ve been in a long time. I would absolutely recommend this book for use with smart, engaged undergraduates; Oberman’s writing is crisp and her message is fresh, timely, and petrifying.

Michelle Oberman thoughtfully answers the question "What would happen if abortion was banned in the United States." Worth reading!

Memoirs of a Miracle: A Journey; From Destitution to Deliverance, by Mr John D McHugh

Review

Throughout this memoir, McHugh gets across how much he relished the nonjudgmental acceptance, kindness, and even generosity of many of his fellow street people. His choice to only minimally develop these secondary figures in his remembrance is appropriate, though, as he depicts them as merely part of an unending party. Over the course of this tale of woe and redemption, McHugh berates himself for becoming what hebelieved to be a degenerate, but he acknowledges the fun that he had as well. Still, the story doesn't ever become repetitive, and the ending is satisfying. Families of addicts, in particular, will find this book to be a must-read.A brutally honest and informative portrait of homeless survival and the dynamics of addiction. "Kirkus Review, 2019"

Riveting autobiography! I couldn't put it down and read it cover to cover in one sitting. Each episode leads to another equally enthralling episode. A truly inspiring and rare memoir of deliverance from seemingly utter despair, hopelessness, and addiction to astonishing triumph and sobriety. It's notably interesting to discover how John uniquely survived and made a life around homelessness and addiction for such a long period of time. John is a gifted writer, a truly amazing man and yes, a "Miracle".Absolutely worth a read!

This book is truly a wonderful read and heart-warming story. John manages to make us laugh, cry and most of all hope. Even if you haven't experienced or been affected by substance-abuse, it is a story of redemption, which we can all relate to. You will fly through this book!

Have bought 3 more copies for friends and am looking to have John come speak to our company!

A very moving and inspirational story about alcoholism, homelessness, and despair. The lifestyle of these folks is like living on another planet to most Americans, yet we see them, or try not to see them every day. Written with clarity, truth, and great courage by a guy who has truly hit bottom, but didn't stay there.

Couldn't put the book down. John seems to be a regular, lovable guy that gets caught up in the cycle of addiction and falls hard but rises above it all. This book made me feel more compassion for the homeless than I thought possible. His story is truly an inspiration. Having a family member as an addict, this book gave me an unique insight into the mind of how an addict justifies their behavior, and has helped me to feel more loving and less angry. It is a must read if you have an addict in your life.

A unbelievable story of redemption. His recovery from years as a homeless alcoholic to a successful civil engineer is truly awe inspiring. Tip of the hat to the author.

Wonderful story! It's raw and real, everyone will be able to connect to something he shares. For those struggling with similar issues his honesty will make you think and reflect. Couldn't put it down.

This book opens your eyes to the gripping reality of addiction and homelessness as you follow one man's candid journey. His raw account of life in the shadows and persistence with becoming his best self are truly inspirational. A must read!
