I just finished Hammer of Witches, and I must say, it was a pretty fun read. Mlawski managed to fit a magical fantasy epic into a historical account without substantially altering the core of the history, which I can't imagine was an easy task. More importantly, the characters were vivid and natural rather than the 2-dimensional bores some books try to spoon feed you. I also loved her interpretations of various myths and legends and how each character came away with a different "truth". The Baba Yaga scene alone is worth the price of admission :D

Shana Mlawski's "Hammer of Witches" is a nicely conceived and well executed fantasy set in an historical context. With the Spanish Inquisition and Columbus's first voyage to the New World serving as the backdrop, we join young Baltasar Infante on his quest for his father and his destiny. Ms. Mlawski does a superb job of maintaining the dramatic tension throughout the entire story. You really do want to know what happens next. I particularly liked the end note inserted by the author informing the reader of what we know, as well as what we don't know, about the historical persons appearing in the book. This is Young Adult fiction at its best - both entertaining and informative.

I really love this book. It has a unique and fresh perspective on the history, and while it is fantasy, I feel that it reflects the time period as accurately as it can. The magic system is interesting and makes a lot of sense with how the story plays out. And, it has fantastically realized characters and places. You can really visualize the journey of Columbus, the state of the "old world" and the beautiful new one.

Religious texts, history, myth - they all tell the story of the mess that is the human family. Shana Mlawski puts these all together in a fast moving mystical fantasy for young adults that is at once informative and thought provoking. For, if we should ever pioneer into the round world of enlightenment we must understand the raw flatland of intolerance, greed and ignorance from which we come.

Baltasar Infante is unaware he has the gift of storytelling: the ability to physically conjure up the characters and creatures from tales. Living in 1490s Spain with this talent is dangerous because a branch of the Inquisition, the Malleus Maleficarum, are hunting storytellers down. The Malleus kidnap and torture Baltasar for information about the sorcerer Amir al-Katib. Baltasar has never met al-Katib but the Malleus slip that Baltasar is al-Katib’s son. Escaping the Malleus, Baltasar goes on a quest to find his father and stop a disastrous prophecy from being fulfilled. His journey takes him on an exploratory mission with Cristόbal Colόn to find the West Indies. The voyage is filled with danger as Baltasar tests his storytelling skills and follows the deadly trail of his father.Hammer of Witches is an inventive story, mixing Christopher Columbus’s voyage to the New World with magic. But Mlawkshi’s creativity feels clumsily pasted together because she does not flesh out a strong foundation for the magic in her story. Readers might think they have a solid grasp of Mlawski’s world only to have it crumble with inconsistent or random details. This plot weakness unfortunately spreads into Mlawski’s character development. Baltasar’s actions and thinking do not always make sense. And Baltasar’s companion, half-genie Jinniyah, seems flat and irrelevant to the story. They are most often magical and overflowing with mystical creatures, adventure, and hidden, but simple truths.Baltasar has grown up with amazing stories swirling around him. Fortunately, the stories continue throughout his adventures. They are the jewels that bring sparkle and life to this book. The plot line runs in a relatively straight line, but is peppered with all kinds of tales. The stories feature murder, revenge, demons, golems, a unicorn, and quite a few ferocious creatures that are the stuff of nightmares. Stories are powerful here regardless of their truthfulness. As Baltasar learns to his surprise– perception is often more important than fact.Characters were also a bright spot in this tale. Baltasar, our storyteller extraordinaire, meets many friends along his journey. A few of them are female characters who definitely add depth to the story. One in particular refuses to be locked into the roles other people choose for her and she schools Baltasar quite thoroughly.From the title and cover, I was expecting a fantasy and possibly some history, but had no idea how MUCH history. I appreciated learning about this time period and came to the realization that I have not read much about the Spanish Inquisition in the past.The title had me puzzled initially, but that is because I had never heard of the document before. The Malleus Malificarum, or Hammer of Witches, was written in the 1400s and led to the persecution of witches or people thought to be witches. Without that base of historical knowledge, I had to read and re-read some things, but most readers will likely be able to follow the events regardless. In addition, Shana provides a great author’s note at the conclusion which points out the relative historical accuracy of the book and where she took artistic license. She also offers many links to primary and secondary sources on her website. I find that I am always craving a bit of non-fiction with historical fiction, so this fit the bill perfectly.Recommendation: Get it soon particularly if historical fiction is one of your favorites. The Firefly: The Official Companion: Volume Two was a wonderful purchase for me. It is 208 pages of detailed information on heavy glossy color pages. It is 32 more pages than Volume One. The photos, sketches and diagrams in the book are wonderful. It is a full size paperback book about 8 1/2" x 11". It is the same size as Volume One. The companion book is a very nice quality. And, it is heavy.It contains the scripts of several episodes which include Jaynestown, Out of Gas, Ariel, War Stories, Trash, The Message, Heart of Gold, and Objects in Space.There are a lot of commentary by the cast and crew. There are profiles of the actors and characters which detail a lot of information. There are a lot of drawings and pictures of props and costumes. There are also a lot of scene info and photos. There is information on the creation of the theme song for the show.Joss Whedon did a great job with the show. And, so did his team. Fox screwed up, and they should have let Whedon do what he knew how to do and to allow the show to stay on a decent night than to mess with things and mess with the episode order.This is definitely a must book for the Firefly fan and any Browncoat for sure.I recommend this book because it is so fully detail with information and color photos, and you get a lot of behind the scenes knowledge about the show and what the actors, writers and directors thought.This companion book tells so much that you are not able to find and gather in one place and be able to have available in front of you in your hands.

As a serious Firefly addict, this book is fascinating! Not only lots of photos and explanations of the major props, it also gives the shooting scripts for the first half of the series. Since I don't always hear clearly, and some actors mumble, I love having the scripts--I can finally see exactly what the words are. Also--and I find this delicious--it gives the Chinese words and phrases spelled correctly, plus the exact meanings. I really enjoy that.Thanks!

This book has everything you could want to know about 8 of the Firefly episodes - including some of the best like, Jaynestown, Out of Gas and Trash - including the full shooting scripts and background information, e.g. how they made the mud that was being farmed. There are also a lot of interviews, photos and other details. It's a great read for anyone who likes the series and/or is interested in how TV is made, particularly the very special kind that Joss Whedon made.

Features the screenplays for the 2nd half of Firefly's one-season run. Lots of stills from the show, interviews with actors and crew. If you love this show (in other words, if you've seen it), you must have this and the first volume.

Best Sci Fi series since Star Trek. Never should have been taken off the air, even if they did swear in Chinese. If you are reading this review, buy the whole series on DVD. It is a successful combination of the best Western with the best space travel. Also, the music is delightful acoustic fiddle.

This book is totally for the Firefly fan. Many have gone to comic book conventions wanting more from this franchise, and it is here. There is so much good inside information that it is hard to pick favorites. Having interviews with the actors helps to give us fans a few minutes more with a great sreies that should have lasted for years. This book with not disappoint and I highly recommend to all. Great inside stuff!!!!

Frankly, I'm stunned there aren't more reviews extolling how exceptional this unfortunately brief series is. I am not one to extoll, so that means something. Whedon has created and assembled a program that I cannot stop watching, and I am joined by an extremely huge contingent of dedicated fans, and you might as well cap every letter in that word, because dedicated we truly are. The best thing I can say, is don't miss this! Odds are extremely high you will fall in love as well. It only offers extraordinary writing, performing, directing; humor, love, danger, amazing storytelling. It is as good as it gets!

Generally, I collect ceramics, I don't make them anymore. I was never very adept with the potting wheel where my projects too often became lost in space, but I used to make very nice ceramics. In the process of dabbling with molds, slip and glaze I wondered about other aspects of the craft and over the years I have read and studied the subject informally. This wonderful book is a valuable resource whether you are starting out and want to experiment with different clay projects or want to refresh your memory.Zakin first explains the building blocks--ceramics-making materials (different combinations lead to different outcomes). He discusses types of clays, feldspars, frits, silica, and other modifying compounds. Ever notice when you hold a cup made from Kaolin (frequently called porcelain) filled with a hot fluid you don't burn your hand whereas the cute cup you bought at the local craft show made from a more porous clay does? Zakin provides a great deal of information about the attributes of clay including plasticity, durability, color, maturity absorption, texture, resistance to warping, and intended use. If you're making a mug, a quiche pan, or a vase (or buying one), you may want to consider these aspects.Zakin provides the reader with much information about ceramic color, glazes, and mold-making (plenty of tips for success). I was fascinated with the sections discussing glaze making and testing, and kiln loading and firing including some nice photos of the raku process. Section 16 includes a succinct history of ceramics that covers various types generated over the ages (nicely illustrated and clearly written).The appendices of the book continue the in-depth exploration of the process of ceramics making including ways to analyze your results. Michael Port's first book, Book Yourself Solid, was a terrific book. His latest is even better.There is so much to like about this book. It is refreshing to see an author stretch himself by writing a sequel that is a real extension to the predecessor. So many authors churn out books regurgitating that they have previously said. This book truly goes "beyond" his earlier book. Kudos, Michael Port, for being a true sequel writer.A second strength is the very thoughtful order in which this new material is presented. The table of contents alone has great value as a checklist for business success. And, the case studies placed at the end to reinforce the learning points presented in the book was a great idea.A third strength is the beautiful balance between sound business advice and worthwhile personal advice. As one that so believes the quality of one's business is a reflection of the quality of one's life, the author is to be congratulated for bridging the gap between business and personal attitude.A fourth strength is the quality of the advice offered. Having spent 25+ years as a business consultant, I am frequently appalled at the quality of advice given in books aimed at the same market as this one. I found not one point that I would debate in the 200 pages. Not a single one.I could go on and on. But, suffice it to say that I strongly recommend this book as a foundational philosophy for any entrepreneur, as well as for professionals in the large professional service organizations (e.g., law firms, accounting firms, etc.). Although the book was seemingly not targeted for the latter group, I believe that professionals in large firms could benefit by adopting Port's philosophies.

 I loved Book Yourself Solid and liked how practical it was. This book was still a very valuable read, but some of his terminology could have been used more clearly, and I wish that he's provided better take-aways as to specific actions readers can take right now after reading this book.I'd recommend this book if you want to think about yourself and your business differently, but if you are in the mood to actually take some step by step actions right now, save this book for when you are in a contemplative or planning phase of your business.

This book really helped me when I needed it most. I was overwhelmed, working too much, and constantly anxious that my business would spin out of control.This book did a great job of taking an overwhelming task - systematizing a business that had relied entirely on my own skill and expertise - and breaking it down into easily manageable parts.It's awesome. If you're having issues dealing with the amount of work you're creating, get this book, read it, and read it again.

Beyond Booked Solid, for me, was the next natural step in the evolution of my business. As I executed the 7 core self-promotion strategies I learned from Book Yourself Solid, Michael's first book, I came to a point where my business was becoming too much to handle by myself. After reading Beyond Booked Solid, and attending a two day, in person seminar on the book with Michael, I now have a scalable, implementable, and leveragable plan for growing my business that also encompasses my values and my desires into the growth. Thank you again, Michael, for another outstanding work!

The 80/20 rule. Being too busy doesn't free you to do higher end work that you want to get into. Beyond Booked Solid has great advice for those who have been in business a while who need to shift to their ideal work, not busy work.

I'm a Michael Port fan. Loved Book Yourself Solid, however this book did little to expand on the concept.To summarize this book,~Think positive~Set goals~Do what it takes to reach them~Franchise yourselfI kept his first book, this book I'm selling after reading it.

Now this is a great book. It's beyond the regular mula in marketing you read all the time. I rated it only 4 stars because you really need to purchase the first book before reading this.

As a biomedical scientist I really enjoyed this book. It is the sequel to the author's previous volume "The Billion Dollar Molecule". Both books provide a fly-on-the-wall account of Vertex Pharmaceuticals, an innovative biopharmaceutical company that brought two breakthrough medicines - one for hepatitis C and the other for cystic fibrosis - to market two years ago. Both these drugs were the first of their kind and have given thousands of patients a new lease on life. From a broader perspective however, the author's goal is to shed light both on the immensely challenging process of bringing a new drug to market and the brilliant scientists and driven personalities that make it possible.Werth's account of Vertex focuses mainly on the hepatitis C drug, with the cystic fibrosis drug playing a smaller but still important role. The previous book was much more science-heavy than this one, emphasizing the chemistry, biology and computer science that goes into the early stages of drug discovery. In spite of the intense scientific competition and research depicted in that volume (much of it spanning the late 80s and early 90s), Vertex did not bring a successful drug to market until 2010, underscoring the challenge of drug discovery in which you have to furiously paddle simply to stay afloat. The two books thus mirror two different phases of the company: the first dealing mainly with the science and the birthing pains of a new startup, and the second dealing with the transformation of the startup into a commercial enterprise. You will thus find much more of the business, legal and commercial aspects of drug development in this volume. Boardroom deliberations and the subtleties of drug pricing litter the narrative. Both books, however, provide an excellent overview of the multiple challenging stages of drug discovery, from discovering an initial "hit", to optimizing its properties to formulating it and finally selling it in the form a once-a-day pill. The account of formulation difficulties was especially revealing to me. As the founder of Vertex put it, taking a drug all the way from initial discovery to the market is harder than putting a man on the moon, partly because the biology is so complex and incompletely understood.Werth has always been a skilled purveyor of the personalities and egos that populate the highest echelons of the science and business and he continues this tradition in this book. Along with highly driven scientists we meet egotistic but talented lawyers, executives, government officials, Wall Street analysts and venture capitalists. The founder of Vertex is described as having a "reality distortion field" akin to Steve Jobs. The character descriptions are far more colorful in the previous book but this volume does have its share of sharp profiles: for instance one management consultant "dressed like George Will but sounded like Don Draper channeling Alan Ginsburg". One of the strengths of the previous volume was that many of the personalities portrayed in it - including academic giants like Robert Burns Woodward and industrial giants like George Merck - were fundamentally more interesting but the present account on the other hand does a better job of describing the vast and sundry set of individuals required to sustain the diverse drug enterprise. We also see how cruel the business can be, bringing failure to years of intense effort and laying off dedicated scientists who have given their heart and soul to the process.Werth's discussion of the two Vertex drugs also raises important questions about the future of the industry. The hepatitis drug is targeted toward a vast patient population, much of which is located in poor countries. The cystic fibrosis drug is targeted toward a small patient population, much of which is located in rich countries. The stories of patients in both groups - one of which Werth documents in detail - are heartbreaking, but in both cases the challenge is to balance profits with cures. In one case the company was compelled to charge exorbitant amounts of money because of the small patient population while in the other case the lack of wealthy patients led to lower revenues. Whether you are developing a drug for millions or for thousands, the R&D costs are roughly the same - and enormous. This is the moral and financial challenge the industry faces right now; how, when it is trying to develop highly personalized therapies for smaller and smaller patient groups, can it get away with both charging reasonable prices and recovering the expenditure on R&D that it can plug into developing the next drug. Werth deftly discusses these issues along with the underlying ones of FDA approvals and Medicare and government controls.Ironically, the successful Vertex story - which culminated last year in a move to a shining, sprawling new building near Boston Harbor - ends in a somewhat somber note. Many of the most important scientists - including the founder - who discovered the two medicines are no longer with the company and the highly-science driven approach that was described in the first book seems to have taken a backseat to commercial pursuits. The future of the company is thus not completely certain, and Werth ends with an afterword in which he discusses the fate of big pharmaceutical companies which seem to be laying off thousands, making incremental advances and cutting each others' throats to bring the next "me-too" pill to market. Unlike Vertex, many of these organizations spend much more on marketing than on R&D and are busy pleasing Wall Street and shareholders rather than patients. As Werth reminds us, if we want to advance the next groundbreaking medicines we need to remember George Merck's advice: focus on patients, the profits will follow. The story of Vertex provides both a shining example and a cautionary note.

Extremely interesting followup to his previous book (The Billion-Dollar Molecule: The Quest for the Perfect Drug) on the biotech company Vertex. Many of the characters from the prior book have either moved on to other ventures or moved up the corporate ladder. Werth traces the evolution of Vertex from a feisty startup focused on perfecting an immunological anti rejection compound for transplants to the more mature company with a different focus and portfolio that it has become over three decades. It also serves as a cautionary tale for the drive to keep a company afloat with investors and in placing too much emphasis (HepC) on a single disease and compound for a company's success. Vertex dominated the HepC market, but only for a brief instant in time. Eric Olson (who has left Vertex) spearheaded the cystic fibrosis program which is now the leading product and dominant revenue stream for the company. Read both books to see how the company started out to design drugs de novo from protein structural information, and by a very convoluted path ended up where it is today.

My son participates in Phase 1 and Phase 3 drug trials at the Univ of Texas. That is complex stuff. The scientific development of the drugs being tested is much more difficult. This book gives you some idea of what is involved. I wish that there were more books like this on other drug companies. This book was particularly good on giving you some idea of the gyrations of the stock price of these companies and what is behind the gyrations. Vertex brought a drug to the market to cure hepatitis C. Possibly one might come up with some discounted cash-flow analysis which would give a value for the company......but after Vertex got its drug to market someone came along with another better drug. How do you model that?I admire Vertex's quest for innovation. But 20 years of research before it can bring a drug to market is almost unbelievable. How they managed to finance this is amazing.The key to all economic growth is innovation. One of the vital issues is how to finance this innovation which requires so much research. There aren't any easy answer. The US seems to be doing better than most other countries.

This book is amazing because I never thought a corporation can have so many souls dancing inside, let alone a Pharma company. I want to say that I exaggerated only a little to compare this book's story to the 10 year Trojan War.What really touched me are the stories of individuals. The Bogers who "bore the torch" in the early days of doing great science and exploring the frontiers, the successors who financed and commercialized the founders' vision, the Wall Street analysts wanting to milk the new Pharmas like they did with the old, the patient advocates who wanted Vertex to remain true to its mission even when it is burning through hundreds of thousands of dollars a day... Those are real people competing viciously with selfish aims and playing out in a ruthless business world where billions of dollars would be won or lost on any single day. The deciding factors at the end of the day are two things: luck and balls.Who doesn't become exited when warm humanitarian ideas and cold hard cash were tossed together and shaken violently by a group of crazy scientists? I will have that straight up any day.
