Simone de Beauvoir's "All Men Are Mortal" tells the tale of an immortal man. Fosca starts out as part of the nobility of a small city state in Italy. After becoming king he finds a way to become immortal. He uses immortality as the chance to secure peace in his city state. He then realizes that is not enough. He must control all of Italy. He then realizes this is not enough. He must control the entire world. He eventually starts to realize that no matter how great his ambitions are he is never able to derive ultimate success in his endeavors.By being immortal Fosca loses all the virtues of being man. He has nothing to give because he has nothing to risk. He looks at everything as if it were part of the past. The entire world is the equivalent of one large anthill for Fosca.Beauvoir's point is made several times throughout the novel. "There is only one good: to act according to one's conscience." "'We don't have to count on the future to give a meaning to our acts. If that were the case, all action would be impossible. We have to a carry on our fight the way we decided to carry it on. That's all.'" Meaning is derived through completing tasks, not the completion of tasks.

I read this book while i was on a kind of "french thing" in my reading, i had read Camus, Satre and Gide prior to reading this book. I had never read anything by this author before this book. The book starts with a simple premise of a man who is immortal telling his story to a woman who wants to be immortal through him and gets into some mindbending territory from there. The brain food factor of this book is very high and i would rate it up there with the best works of Camus and Satre for philosophical weight. The story develops really well and the whole work is highly readable. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a novel that makes them think.

This haunting book is about a ruler of an Italian city-state who believes that he can make his fiefdom a prosperous and contented utopia if only he is given enough time to do so. He eventually attains the gift of immortality, but soon realizes that people cannot or will not change; rather they make the same mistakes over and over again. Giving up his ideals about making the perfect society, he wanders throughout time in a daze, which is broken only at rare points when someone renews his hope for humanity's potential. However, he watches the failure of humankind again and again, and thus his immortality becomes burdensome to the point of not being able to enjoy even the simplest of life's pleasures. What is the point of falling in love or making a friendship, only to watch people you care about grow old and die? What is the point in trying to change things when their essence remains the same throughout time? Du Beauvior dedicated this philosophical book to Jean-Paul Sartre, and it is a thoughtful, chilling look at humankind and our desire for perfection.

Another deBeauvoir's existential take on finding oneself by knowing the big other. Makes so much sense.

'All Men Are Mortal' is such a departure from her other novels I was a first taken a bit aback. One has to really enjoy learning about European history to get the full impact of what she's attempting to convey. That said, it's enjoyable on many levels, especially for a novel with an existential bent. But again very different from let's say 'The Mandarins' or 'She Came to Stay'.

The book is an amazing perspective. Super original, I massively enjoyed. It might lag for some people but the point is to understand the plight of the the main guy who is immortal; which is that time, effort and change do not exist and haven't since the early medieval period. It is also a fast track through history which is the same as it ever was.

If you like existential fiction, this will really make you think.

Only reason why not 5 stars is because the cover is cheesy. I read it as a young man in the original hardcover which left me unprepared to the historic, philosophical, romantic, adventure-filled story. In my opinion far above anything else Beauvoir wrote. Applied existentialism.

This book only provides 1 word per page with a correlating image. For instance "patient" appears next to a picture of duck waiting for a snail to slug along. At first I was annoyed that there was no definition or context for the feelings, but I realized that the author probably wants to leave it open-ended for the parents to describe the word. I find that it helps me really think about what it means to be patient, angry, selfish, etc and then help better describe that emotion to my son (with real life examples instead of just being a robot reading words from a page)!

Honestly, I had expected more words per page, like a sentence on each. Instead, there's only a single word ("frustrated" or "happy" etc) per page. So as an adult, I was a little disappointed when I saw it.But my almost-four-year-old daughter strongly disagrees. She LOVES the adorable and clear pictures and likes telling the "story" of what is happening in each one, finishing up by saying the word on each page (which she's memorized). So despite my opinion, this book apparently deserves 5 stars from its target audience!

We are obsessed with all the duck & goose books around here, so don't read this review the wrong way. I love this book and highly recommend it. Just note it skews slightly older and is more of a "story" (and many more words) than the other duck and goose books we have (D&G Find A Pumpkin, D&G It's Time for Christmas, D&G How are You Feeling, D&G Goose Needs A Hug, all of which we have and my toddler has memorized by heart). Those books are all "bite sized" in terms of plot and word-count. This one is longer. Just an FYI. But we love it nonetheless!

I ordered this book for my 9 month old because I wanted him to have books about emotions. This one is perfect. It’s simple and open-ended so the parent/caregiver/teacher can explain the emotion written in words the child can understand- making this a good book to use as the child gets older. Geared towards toddlers but could definitely be used with preschoolers or even kindergarteners for explaining and understanding emotions.

My granddaughter and I have been fans of Duck and Goose ever since I came across "What's Up, Duck? A Book of Opposites" some time back. Since then we've read (and re-read, and re-read) "How are you Feeling?", "Goose Needs a Hug", and "Duck and Goose Find a Pumpkin". But nothing had prepared me for the beauty and sweetness of this "origin issue" (as they would say in the comic book industry) story. Near perfection! Initially squaring off over who has rights to what they erroneously think is an egg, Duck and Goose learn by working together in caring for their supposed treasure to be fast friends, deeply appreciative of each other's unique traits. The last pages of this beautifully illustrated and profound story had me in tears (of joy) - especially the very last two words, on a page of their own.

I purchased this for my 6 month old granddaughter. The colors demonstrated in this book are okay, but not your basic primary colors that I thought would be introduced. This is fine for supplemental teaching of colors, for a slightly older toddler, but I'm going to continue to look for a book that will teach the primary colors. I wasn't fond of how the colors were depicted. Again, better as supplemental reading for an older toddler instead of introductory teaching.

Our newly two year old LOVES this book! He asks for it again and again. The writing is simple but uses lots of descriptive words. The back and forth between the characters is funny and cute. We all enjoy this book. Thank you Amazon for including this in our toddler’s book subscription box!! We have purchased this as a gift because it’s such a hit with us.

LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS BOOK My family LOVES the duck and goose books. The are so cute and so easy for little ones to follow. It only took a few times of reading through this book for my son to start trying to read it back to me. I would give ANY of the duck and goose books as gifts in a heartbeat.

_Radio Golf_ is is the last play in August Wilson's "Century Series" set in 1997 Pittsburgh and, after The Piano Lesson (The August Wilson Century Cycle), it is his most powerful piece. In concluding his magnum opus, Wilson ends where the series began, at 1839 Wylie St. (the setting of Gem of the Ocean (August Wilson Century Cycle).) The Hill District has become derlict - a run-down part of the city where crime is rampant, poverty is endemic. Harmond Wilks, a candidate for mayor, and his business partner Roosevelt Hicks see an opportunity to redevelop the Hill District - gentrifying it and making millions for themselves. Their plans go awry, however, when it becomes apparent that the center of their redevelopment, 1839 Wylie, was illeagally purchased by the development company and the rightful owner, Elder Joseph Barlow, refuses to let his family home be torn down. A crisis of conscience follows: should Wilks proceed with the development? His position in the city and candidacy would allow him to illeaglly proceed, but he is morally conflicted; Hicks has no compunction. The play is powerful for a number of reasons: unlike many of Wilson's plays, the plot only obliquely addresses race - the conflict here is one of social class rather than of race directly. It also raises the question of how much responsibility does a society have to its underprivlidged? It was the issue of gentrification that resonated most strongly with me, however. As the Hill District is redeveloped, the long-time African-American community would be forced out (a Starbucks, Barnes and Noble, and Whole Foods would replace homes) replaced with business, homes and services catering to the upper-middle class (whites as well as African-Americans.) This is happening in my own city, and in cities around the country (5-Points in Denver, the Treme in New Orleans, the site of the old Cabrini Green in Chicago to name a few). The injustice of the process of gentrification is what WIlson highlights; it is essentially a class-conflict. As one working-class character, Sterling, reminds Wilks, "The white mayor he be the mayor of white folks. Black folks can't get the streets cleaned. The schools don't have no textbooks. Don't have no football uniforms, The mayor be the mayor of white folks. ... What's wrong with being the mayor for black folks?" To which Wilks responds, "I'm going to be the mayor for everybody. Its not about being black or white, it's about being American." Later in the play Hicks tells Sterling, "It's not my fault if your daddy's in jail, your mama's on drugs, your little sister's pregnant and the kids don't have any food 'cause the welfare cut off the money. Roosevelt Hicks ain't holding nobody back. Roosevelt Hicks got money. Roosevelt Hicks got a job because Roosevelt Hicks wanted one. You ... kill me blaming somebody else for your troubles. Get up ... quit stealing ... quit using drugs ... go to school ... get a job ... pay your taxes. Oh, I see, you can't do that because Roosevelt Hicks is holding you back."In the forward, August Wilson writes, "In the twenty-first century, we can go forward together. That was my idea behind the play." He has done this, and succeeded brilliantly in reminding us that all Americans have a fundamental responsibility to do right by each other. Such egalitarianism is at the heart of our shared national ideal. If you have a chance to see the play performed, do not miss it. Reading the play is an equally rewarding experience. My highest recommendations.

Anything August Wilson. My daughter brought me the complete series of plays by this marvelous playwright. I will keep it to hand down to my grandchild.

Clean, new/like new copy, came on time. Perfect for my class.

I mean, come on, it's August Wilson!

I love this series and this is one of the better ones. - Black realistate developer does right and sticks by his word as his friends abandon him

As good as Fences!

As expected.

August Wilson. Such a wonderful writer.

Bold & Brave: Ten Heroes Who Won Women the Right to Vote, by Kirsten Gillibrand

From School Library Journal

Gr 2-5-Gillibrand, a U.S. Senator, begins with a quick look back at her great-grandmother, grandmother, and mother-all strong women who bucked the norm, fought for what they believed in, and never backed down. And who inspired these female forebears to be "bold and brave so they could teach me and you?" Blending eye-catching artwork with well-written text, the two-page profiles that follow introduce 10 trailblazing women, touching upon each individual's particular challenges, accomplishments, and legacy. Well-chosen details make the snapshots vivid, as do the short quotations woven into the vignettes (though no citations are provided). Kalman's full-page portraits combine the realism of a photograph with bold color choices that pack in personality and make the images pop off the pages. Featured are figures such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Jovita Idár, and Mary Church Terrell. The book ends on a well-conceived and truly inspirational note with mention of the 2017 Women's March in Washington, DC and a call to readers to "Stand up, speak out, and fight for what you believe in." VERDICT A rousing introduction to 10 fascinating and fearless women. Consider for robust collections.-Joy Fleishhacker, Pikes Peak Library District, Colorado Springsα(c) Copyright 2011. I was excided to buy this book for my nieces but I was disappointed in it. I love the subject matter but this is what I would have changed: 1. The cover, it's awash with pink so most boys are not going to pick it up and they would benefit from this information as well. 2. The art in general, while the information is good for all ages, it's little kid art and I will be addressing it to my 8 year old niece and get something else for my 12 year old niece. 3. The content, Why is in not chronological and why does it not go into more detail. Too bad, it could have been such an excellent book. Perhaps I will need to write one myself.

It was wonderful to get this book one week after voting. I was delighted to read this book to my 9 year old twin daughters. It was perfect for them. That said, I felt incredibly emotional. Although I know the history, it is still so difficult to imagine that women were treated this way. I explained to my girls that these brave women fought so hard so we could have opportunities. These women are my heroes. I believe this book should be part of the American elementary school curriculum. Well done Senator Gillibrand.

I loved reading the stories of the "sheroes" who were so brave and helped make sure that all women would be able to vote one day. Each chapter is a great introduction to their contributions to the movement and i plan to do more reading about each of these women. Thank you for writing such an important book!

I bought this book for my granddaughter so she would be able to tell me all about how the 19th amendment was passed I recently read a book called the woman’s hour which was quite detailed so this was a young adult version I think every teenage girl should read this book so she understands what It took for women to get the right to vote

I think this is a great book for you g girls and even boys to read about history. So much history is lost by the youth of today and is not taught in schools like it was when I was in school. It’s a shame that history is not taught like it used to be. That why the youth of today doesn’t understand what these statues of Confederate soldiers represent. It was not just about slavery, it was about more. And the youth of today just wants to make it a race issue. They need to do some research and learn more about the history of their country, abuse it’s not taught in schools anymore.

I bought this for my classroom. Very pretty illustrations and wonderful information.

I bought for my granddaughter and she love it. It turned out they were studying it in school when she got it.

Nice addition to a child’s library, about our 22 amendment. Puts for a positivemessage, lovely illustrations
