This may be almost sacrilege to speak against Lydiard as a runner.However, this book is plain awful. I am sure this never passed through the hands of a reputable publisher. Otherwise, it could never have been printed. It reads like the musings of a middle schooler, and has no appreciable outline or direction.It does have some good running advice: train don't strain, etc. However, the good advice could be condensed into about 10 pages. I am extremely disappointed, that the running brain of this man could not be captured better. If a more experienced reader has any titles which may acquaint me (and others) with his work, I hope you will direct me to that work.I asked for a refund from Amazon (have never done this) and hope it will be awarded. The book does have complete 26wk training schedules for everything from 5K to marathon- so I guess there is that....

Terribly written and not edited. Seems like it was put together from a series of articles. In a few places the author directly contradicts himself. Much of the latter chapters seem to be directed at someone coaching or playing rugby or soccer, not a runner. The training schedules are not really explained just shown. The information here on nutrition, sports psychology, and injury prevention is woefully out of date.Don't waste your time with this book.

Is a classics it gives ideas (guidelines) and approach to training. Doesn't have a lot of the bull you find in current "training" books. If you understand energy systems and use his methods you will get results. No shortcuts, if interested a lot stuff available, from the Lydiard Foundation.

A must-read for anyone wanting to run: beginners through to competitive athletes. Arthur Lydiard is rightly considered the grandfather of modern running and it would be remiss of anyone wanting to take running seriously to ignore his advice: advice which quite rightly has stood the test of time.

This is is very informative and educational: it contains explanations and anecdotes of support to each advice given. In addition it provides data and metrics to help you understand and appreciate the value of proper training to compete.

Classic Arthur Lydiard! Nice reading a simplified approach to training which has been so complicated by today's standards. Definitely had to keep reminding myself when this book was written! I am able to refer right to the training plans and apply them. Good stuff!

A good book for those that are new to magic. Protecting yourself, and home from unwanted energy is always of utmost importance. However, unless you are fully experienced, it is my opinion that sympathetic magic, whereas you bind yourself to an object, like a poppet, is better left alone. I also feel that it is unwise to “invoke ancestors to protect you and your family” as outlined in chapter 4. Reason being that unless you know exactly who you’re invoking, you could be inviting an ancestor with low energy and a bad past. Always be cautious.Other than those two issues, I think that this book offers a lot of positive and simple opportunities to practice your skills at energy working.

I really like the section on how spells work. The author tells us, "... if you're looking to use spells to avoid work, you're in for a rude awakening." Ain't it the truth!! Time, patience and more patience are key to working with magic. It is refreshing to see a book confess this at the very beginning. There's no easy way to get what you want in life. In order to succeed, you must work for it.The section on ethics is also very good. On page 17 the author tells the reader, "You don't get to do magic on or for people without their permission." So many new witches jump right into binding magic, curses or even healing spells without first consulting with your client or perspective client. Sometimes a client may be working against the very magic you're casting. Sometimes consent to cast isn't enough. An example of this is when I was working a binding spell for an abusive partner and the client was actively calling the target of the spell. They were following them from work, and driving by the abusive partner's house. This is directly counter productive for a binding spell. Once I found out, I quickly cut the cord with this client. So consent is indeed critical in spell work but so is the responsibility of the client to follow the path the adviser has laid out for them.Circle basics, casting and altars are at the very beginning of the text. Something I find that many spell books are lacking. The author fails to add "Wards" in the Types of spells section on page 25. I was a bit surprised by this; as wards are the most common type of protection spells out there. We only hear about binding more due to Hollywood, but wards are super simple and work well to return magic back to its origin either in reverse or directly as the sender intended. For me, I see this come to fruition in many of my day to day activities. Wards only work on those sending magic to you. If they're sending good magic, they get good magic back. If they send bad magic - well, you know how that goes.The books is divided up on spells related to Body and Spirit, House and Home and Rituals and Protective Objects. On page 166, the author gives us a spell for protecting oneself on public transport. This spell pulls in the Raidho and Eihwaz runes and gives the reader direction on how to apply the runes to a transit pass (bus pass/ticket) for a trouble free journey. The spell is extremely easy and could even be preformed at the bus stop while you wait.As with many of the books I review, my favorite part is the reference section. The key to any good spell book is to be able to find exactly what I'm looking for quickly. The author makes it easy for me to find purification spells, cord magic and much more with the full index in the back. I believe many authors skip this important step. We're witches on the go, we have shit to do, please let me find the spells a bit more easily.Over all I would say this is a great book for those not interested in writing their own spells. They are simply written, easy to use and well thought out. The Purifying Spray on page 88 for example is extremely easy to use and for the most part, made up of ingredients that most witches would have on hand.I would highly recommend adding this book to your standard witchy library. I believe you won't be disappointed.

This book is a book of protection spells but it is also great book for learning how to set intentions, how to ground yourself, and how to calm yourself when the world gets crazy. I've done the spells, but I'm also practicing grounding and harnessing energy to manifest goals. i.e. set an intention and work towards it.

This is one of the best reads i’ve had all year, for it paints an in depth picture of the pathology that afflicts our current Preidient, as described by a panel of psychiatrists and psychologists meeting at a Yale symposium. Indeed, I made a list of the personality disorders described for him and keep in on my phone; it’s a wonderful reference guide to explain the truly screwed up behavior Trump shows daily. Much of it is expected “e.g malignant narcissism” but also much to me is new (e.g “a present hedonist” who cares not what came before, or what will come after, but only about what’s happening now and how it affects him.)The rap on the book comes from academic physicians who cite the Goldwater rule, which says you shouldn’t diagnose a person’s pathology unless you’ve examined them directly. I’m an academic and can assure you otherwise. The contributors in the book take that argument on directly, and carefully qualify their diagnoses based upon the behavior they see from afar. They also argue that Trump is the most powerful person in the world with his finger on the nuclear button...understanding his pathology “trumps” all other concerns.History will reference this book when it analyzes Trump’s personality, pathology, and performance. I recommend it enthusiastically.

Most discerning Americans know Trump is a narcissist who mixes lies with delusion, slanders freely, and moment to moment must have the spotlight turned on him, even if it means, for example, undercutting his Secretary of State Tillerson and potentially dragging the world into a war in service to his ever-faltering self-esteem.Lee's book appears to have been written by among the best that psychiatry/psychology have to offer. The delusion that Trump has some secret wisdom leaves us in danger of following Trump down the rabbit hole to our own destruction.Trump’s presidency is a threat to our democratic republic, our freedoms, our values, and for the spiritually-inclined, our very souls. I am grateful to these courageous authors for doing what they can to save America and the world from Trump’s toxicity. History will look kindly on them; they chose well. It is up to each of us to do what little we can to protect what we have here in an era of vulnerability as a deranged leader tears at the fabric of our nation in service of his emotional needs. KAZUAKI TANAHASHI is an accomplished Japanese calligrapher, Zen teacher, author, and translator of Buddhist texts from Japanese and Chinese to English, most notably works by Dogen. He first met Shunryu Suzuki in 1964, and upon reading Suzuki's book Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind he stated, "I could see it's Shobogenzo in a very plain, simple language." Don't get me wrong, this is an excellent book; however, the problem for beginners is learning how to position the brush and when to apply pressure and when to let up. The sequential diagrams in this book are a good attempt at illustrating these problems in a static form. Unfortunately, beginners need to watch someone who knows what they're doing to get a real idea of how to finesse the brush. A class is better for the beginner, as long as the instructor is competent. Unfortunately all of the instructional DVDs I have seen are in Chinese. Perhaps YouTube has something. I was lucky enough to take a course from an experienced teacher and it made all of the difference.

This new calligraphy book is extremely helpful. The front section has explanations on how to form the various types of strokes, step by step. The rest of the book contains single characters, each with a two-page spread. The steps for forming the character are shown, along with beautifully executed examples (in various scripts), definitions, pronunciation, etc.The layout is excellent for daily practice--just open to any page that inspires you, and paint that character. At the end of the book there is a discussion of the art of calligraphy. Finally there is an index of radicals and compounds. As a beginner trying to learn without access to a teacher, I find this book the most useful one I've encountered so far.

I have attempted to use other sources for learning the art of Asian calligraphy; however, this is by far the very best by one of the most outstanding scholars of Zen culture. Tanahashi provides elegant formal, semi cursive, and cursive examples of 150 important Chinese and Japanese ideographs for the student to render. The author is very encouraging to those who undertake this art. It takes a good deal of concentration and awareness of the moment. Rather than encourage goal orientation, Tanahashi suggests that the task leads the artist to deepen her/his life. In time, working with these ideographs you can touch your creative abilities.

Overall the book provides good instructions and explanations for getting started. A video might be helpful, but the brush stroke diagrams are pretty self-explanatory.The only issue I have are the samples starting at page 316 deteriorate or did not get printed in the book properly. From the images you can see that there is a good example of the completed character, and then when you hit page 316, the samples look like the character was zoomed in too much and then only partially fit into the book.

I bought this for my granddaughter who loves drawing and wanted to do different kinds of calligraphy. Good choice!

The author provides resources to explore the chinese calligraphy world. Ideograms are shown with different pronunciations (mandarin, japanese, korean, vietnamese).

I am buying another one to give as a gift. Highest praise I can give the author.

If you have an interest in the development of Christianity, the Western Mystery Tradition or heresiology, this book by Richard Smoley proves to be an interesting read.The book itself is written at a level where only a basic knowledge of Christian history and theology is required to get a grasp of the thesis of the book. Smoley takes the reader through nearly 2200 years of Gnostic thought and history, starting with Zoroastrianism and Manichaeism and running through modern times, including the popular perceived offshoots such as the Albigensian Cathars, the Rosicrucians, the Freemasons, the Knights Templar all the way to Jung, Blavatsky, the DaVinci Code and the Matrix.While he tries to cover a lot of ground in a relatively short book, you get the flavor of Gnostic themes as an ever evolving, ever present element interweaving itself through Christian history. Smoley discusses not only the history, but the theology and the psychology of the various Gnostic themes, explores and discusses common information like the Nag Hammadi library and the Dead Sea Scrolls, as well as reviews basic mainstream Christian theology in a compare and contrast exercise including a look at "mainstream" Christian (both Western and Orthodox) mysticism and prayer practices.If you have an interest in this topic, this is a good read.

This book is easily the most comprehensive, easy to read, well researched book on esoteric spirituality. All of this in the space of 256 pages! The index is thorough (have you noticed that more and more non-fiction books are being published without indices?! Not this one, I am happy to report!)and the chapters are well organized. The book serves well either as an introduction to esoteric/gnostic spiritualities, as a historical survey of the history of those spiritualities, or as an up-to-date series on recent developments in this area of knowledge. Richard Smoley is an authority on these matters and has done a marvelous job with this book. I was especially interested in and appreciative of the section of the book that discusses A Course in Miracles. This one is a "must have" book! Highly recommended.

The book is well written and does a good job tying Gnostic thoughts to other historical spiritual movements and individuals. I held back from a five star rating only because I would have enjoyed more in-depth writing on the actual so-called gnostics themselves, perhaps more on the different gnostic writings like the Nag Hammadi library. I think the author, after publishing and reading so many books wrote this to "add to the pile" of existing literature. However, this may not line up with his audience (but maybe I'm a less familiar exception here). All in all, the author covers the scope of his purpose very well in a way that is accessible, fluid, and directional in what seems like a challenging and nebulous topic.

By far, the best resource to understand Gnosticism. It covers most all of the major branches of the Gnostics, the history, the epistemology, the heresiology, and viewpoint. A common theme begins to develop as one works their way through the various aspects of the specific schools of gnostic thought. After reading in upwards of forty books on the subject of Gnosticism, I am of the opinion that no other book on the subject covers so much so quickly.

Gave me a lot of well researched information but I did not find a thread to follow the theme. Good book for follow up discussion.

Richard Smoley gives a solid overview of Gnosticism through the ages from a variety of angles. He touches on a wide spectrum of writers, groups and experiences. He filled in a lot of gaps for this writer.

Outstanding read, that traces Gnosticism from its simple origins all throughout history. A great book for the skeptic and the curious alike, and very easy to understand.

Although this book was written in 1985 many of the concepts and anecdotes in it hold up well. The landscape has changed to more personalized messaging opportunities, but Ogilvy's main points about facts, emotion, narrative, and connection still applies. He seems to be a fan of balancing creative with research and had the foresight to understand that both were changing with the times. No doubt if he personally was still around there would be some additions to account for new trends and technologies but the concept of finding what works best for the medium would stay the same.Ogilvy made his name on print and TV, so most of the anecdotes are along those lines. It is also amusing at times to see the changing social norms that make some of the tropes and hooks feel outdated.Good read as a part of a comprehensive look at advertising but don't think this is the only thing that must be read, or that it should be taken as gospel.

Great book for a newbie learning about marketing! This book doesn't have all the answers you may ask about marketing, but it answers a lot! He gives good basic guidelines that you should follow, not just as a marketer, but as a marketing firm and company. This is an old school book, so it doesn't include anything about digital marketing. But if you do any marketing outside the digital world, this is a great guide! Some chapters are better than others, depending on what you want to get out this book. I found the information for large marketing firms,TV ads, ads for travel, and ads for international firms to be boring, because that doesn't relate to me, but everything else was well worth my time! You might feel the same way, but remember,the marketing industry is big, with so many roles to play in it!

Although Ogilvy's book is almost 25 years old, it's jam packed with timely instruction, insight, and examples. Or perhaps because it is 25 years old. Ogilvy quotes colleague Bill Bernbach:"It is fashionable to talk about changing man. A communicator must be concerned with unchanging man ... The creative man with an insight into human nature, with the artistry to touch and move people will succeed. Without them he will fail."Ogilvy had insight in spades, practical experience, common sense, a passion for research as well as creativity, and above all, a relentless focus on selling. Pick any few paragraphs at random and all those qualities will shine through. Among the many ideas I found really helpful--1. Branding means giving your product personality. (For example, the man in the Hathaway shirt wore an eyepatch.)2. Facts sell better than hype.3. The principles of direct response apply to all forms of advertising.4. Creativity is worthless unless it sells.5. Copywriting is the heart of advertising.6. Use the brand name in your headline. Otherwise 80% of readers may never see it.7. Long copy sells.8. Analogies, big words, and naming the competitor confuse people.9. Pricing cannot be determined scientifically.10. Excellent graphic design is simple graphic design.11. Corporate advertising is worthwhile.12. Always include a promise in your headline.13. The era of the blockbuster brand is ending. (Ogivly detected the "Long Tail" 20 years before most of us!)14. According to Ogivly, "...advertising is no more and no less than a reasonably efficient way to sell."But this summary doesn't do the book justice. He makes solid points nonstop. Not surprising for a master copywriter and former door-to-door salesman, he writes in plain English. He offers "big picture" reflections on the advertising industry, including an impassioned defense of advertising against charges of hucksterism. He offers detailed tips that are just as important, mainly on print advertising, direct response, and dealing with clients.Educational, authoritative, fun to read. A+

This is not a textbook and it is not a new book, so you won't read about any kind of internet advertising and you're definitely getting one perspective (but you couldn't find a better perspective if you had to choose just one). If you want an overview of the core principles that are true for ALL ad-like communications, this is a must-read. The medium might change, but the principles remain the same -- and nobody knew the principles like David Ogilvy. For those wanting a current view of the ad world -- especially involving internet or social media -- read this book FIRST and then buy any of a number of books on current practices. This will teach you the fundamentals.
