This book is beautiful reminder of how fragile life is. It drips with emotion from the first page. I started it while I was laying in bed on Sunday morning, my gf also glanced over to check out the first page or two, 90 minutes later we were still turning pages and hadn't moved! This is such an inspiring story about gratitude, positivity and above all else... love. I don't know how "Dr. McSegal" managed to get in so many hilarious stories into a deep and almost philosophical book about his wife being 'hit by a bus', but trust me he did. There is a story towards the end that makes the movie Bridesmaids seem tame ;) You'll know it when you read it! Ha!! I don't usually power through books, but before I knew it I had finished it in two days. It's a wonderfully written book on so many levels. It's so tragic that the accident even happened, but at least the author was able to take Susan and their journey and teach us all a little bit about the important lessons of life.

I think everyone fears something like this happening to us or a loved one, so this true story of an LA family whose lives are suddenly upended when Susan and her daughter are struck head-on in their car by a city bus is terrifying but identifiable. Their family, friends and community immediately respond with love and action, organizing into a much needed and appreciated network. The insights of Susan Segal’s writer husband, Doug, during this crazy, stressful, but ultimately uplifting journey are beautifully written, and it's an engrossing, emotional and often funny (when you least expect it) read. I think this would be a perfect book for anyone working their way through a difficult injury, accident or illness...Or read it even if you just need a healthy dose of heartwarming inspiration, which we all do from time to time!

It’s hard to accomplish both comedy and pathos in any memoir, let alone one that centers on the tragedy of a woman hit by a bus. The format of Struck works beautifully: a heartbreakingly honest series of emails posted to friends during the crises, along with chapters written as asides - deeper reflections on what was also going on behind the scenes, “the unposted” moments. Segal’s nimble writing takes us on the journey of a lifetime – one that neither he nor his wife knew they were embarking upon one fine October morning in Los Angeles. As we follow the crazy twists and turns of the drama, we fall in love with both Segal and his wife Susan, whose recovery is uncertain. Susan’s incredible strength, will to live and humor (some of it drug induced which, believe it or not, you may find yourself giggling at) won me over. As did Segal- for his utter devotion to Susan and to his children, in the face of the unknown. A rollercoaster of a memoir, this one will remain indelible.

The emails began soon after the accident. Doug, the author of the book, began writing them to help his small community of friends and family understand this horrible turn in his family's life. People hung on every word and felt the grief and the unwavering love that leaped off each email. How do you come back from something like this -Susan, Doug's wife, getting hit by a bus - literally (as in the original meaning of the word)? The book, Struck, sprung from these original, raw pieces of life lived in the face of unbelievable challenges. I very much dislike this book. I'd bet it was written by someone else, the syntax is different, the cadence is different, the primary characters are wrong, and the book is even written in 3rd person, unlike all the prior books in the series.This book sucks. If you want the spoiler, I can summarize the 2 plot items you'll waste hours extracting. If it saves you the misery of reading this drivel, I'll consider it a consolation prize.Maybe the next will suck too, not sure; but after several engaging books, this is a poor example of the written word, and a complete waste if my valuable time.I might be done with this author for good.

I've read quite a few Scarpetta books and know the characters. With past experience in mind, I thought this one would be good. I was dissapointed as it was needlessly long in some portions of the story where I found myself skipping through much of it as it didn't really add that much. I finally got to the climatic end and it did just that - ended suddenly. I know the author wants cliffhangers to spur sales of the next one, but this was really sub par in how it was handled IMO, especially in light of how the long winded story lines were done through most of the rest of the book.

The early Scarpetta novels were well-paced, full of character development, and fun to read. This was disjointed and flat. I spent the entire book waiting for the story to get started. When I reached the end, I wasn't sure what had been accomplished, how we had gotten to where we were, or what the actual point of the story was. Not worth the effort...to read or to write.

Can I give Blow Fly 0 stars? Terrible! It seemed as though this book was written by a totally different author - completely different writing style & story telling. No longer is Dr. Scarpetta telling the story in the 1st person, & there was a good bit of revisionist history. Did Cornwell forget the story arcs from the previous books? Also, while the previous novels in this series were somewhat graphic, this one was simply gross & bordering on pornographic. I almost quit reading it after the first few chapters but kept hoping it would get better. It did not. The ending was terrible & made no sense at all. I'm not sure I'll be reading any more of this series. A sample of the next one seems to contain the same priblems as this one.

haven't read her for awhile so when a buy deal was offered, I jumped. Now, at more than half way thru, I'm here hoping to find a review that tells me the end so I don't have to read anymore. It's a well written book; but, I just don't like all the gore and jumping around with so little dialog. The characters are barely recognizable and I don't believe thats all because of my absence. So disappointed...mostly because no reviews reveal the end and I actually have to go back and finish the last 30%.

I have read all of the books in the series. This one is way off track. I prefer a more realistic story. Kay's character is plenty interesting without adding super human villains and unbelievable story lines. Come on cornwell, get back to what made the books great. I want to see Kay doing what she does best, forensic detective. And put Marino on a diet and get him healthy! That would be more realistic than some of the villains in this book!

I’ve read every Patricia Cornwell Scarlett’s Mystery, except for this one. I stopped reading this one when it became too graphically gruesome. I am officially in mourning.

I've read many Patricia Cornwell novels and was unable to even finish this one. I may do so at a later time, but was unable to stay interested and focused on the storyline. There is usually a murder to be solved and this one did not really have Dr. Scarpetta working on a crime and I was over halfway into the book! Very disappointing to me as a Cornwell fan. I moved on to the next book in the series after trying to finish Blow Fly unsuccessfully. It just wasn't the style I prefer reading so I moved on to another.

About the Author

St. Therese of Lisieux, also known as "Therese of the Child Jesus" and "The Little Flower", was the last of nine children born to Louis and Zelie Martin, at France in 1873. She died of tuberculosis on September 30, 1897, at the age of 24 and was canonized only 28 years later, in 1925, by Pope Pius XI. She was later installed as the thirty-third Doctor of the Church by Pope John Paul II in 1997.

Anyone,Catholic or not, should read this book about Ste. Therese of Lisieux. I actually read about her in another book. The small amount I had read about her, made me want to know more. I became driven to find books about her. There are other books that should be read in conjunction with "The Story of a Soul..."If there is one who can end any of the books that can be read along with this book, or just end reading this book alone and feel that thus far they have lived their lives in anywhere near a compassionate manner, they are lying not only to themselves but to all they meet. I have never read such a book that caused me to cry, laugh, and pray throughout. READ THIS BOOK! Your life will change, mine has!

"The Story of a Soul: The Autobiography of St. Therese of Lisieux" is, in my opinion, one of the greatest of the autobiographical writings of the Saints... one of the most important Catholic books of the last 200 years... and a definite "Must Read" for all Catholics. I always have a copy of it lying around... and I read through it leisurely... never rushing through it or trying to finish it as quickly as possible. When I do finish reading it, it doesn't tend to be too long before I start reading it again. I not only have it in "book" form - I also have it on my Kindle, so I'm able to have it on me at all times via the Kindle app for my iPhone.The "Tan Classics" paperback edition is fantastic. Great quality... it's able to hold up to heavy use. The printing/text is very easy and comfortable to read. The cover is nice, and is also quite sturdy.Bottom-line: "Yes" - you should buy and read this book!

This book is published by many publishers but ICS, which is the publisher for the Carmelites, has the best edition of this book. I've read the book before and this translation is excellent. It is like reading an entirely different book. The study part has information that helps fill in parts she doesn't talk about and gives short thought provoking text. I highly recommend it.

What a beautifully written and charming book! Filled with heartwarming tenderness! I like this version much better than another one I have, b/c the language and grammatical style is so much more smooth, flowery and poetic. The other version is choppy, dull and plain sounding. I have to admit from other reviews I expected to get more out of this. It's not an easy read, at least not for me. Probably because I want to actually "get" the spiritual meaning from the book. I'm really surprised that Gretchen Rubin (The Happiness Project) fell in love with St. Therese as I believe Gretchen claims to be atheist (correct me if I'm wrong). It is very much a book that Catholics would relate to, but I'm not sure others from Christian denominations would be able to appreciate. I'm still wading through it (almost done though!) It's the kind of book I might pick up years from now and get more out of it. It's that kind of book.

She was my mother in laws patron saint. Her name was Theresa too....I sent this book to my husband who is encarcerated and he loved it so much.

This comment is not about the book content itself, but the lack of transparency in the marketing to inform the buyers that there are several versions of the book:The complete book has 4 parts:Part 1: Astronomy and the Universe (chapters 1-5)Part 2: Our Planetary System (chapters 6-15)Part 3: Stars and Stellar Evolution (chapters 16-22)Part 4: Galaxies and Cosmology (chapters 23-28)The version I got includes only parts 1, 3, and 4. Volume 1 supposed to include chapters 1-16 and 28.The hardcover version of the book doesn't say volume 1 or 2, so it may include all chapters. I don't have that book, so I can only infer from its "Product details" that it has 800+ pages, whereas my book has only 500+ pages.I don't know the reason behind this arrangement. I can only guess it may be based on good intention that some courses may only require the content of volume 2 or 1, in that case the students can just buy one volume, not the whole book, saving them a lot of money, considering the pricing for college textbooks is astronomical these days.This is all fine. What's annoying is that the publisher has not bothered to put such a simple description in a place where people usually to find about the book structure, such as on back cover, in preface, etc. Only at the end of the detailed table of contents, in a format like a footnote, it says that all the wonderful contents in the list are not all in this book (vol 2), and chapters 6-15 "appear in Volume 1: The Solar System."As a book lover, had I known this information, I would have gone to order the hardcover book (hopefully it's the complete version with all chapters "appearing"), rather than the book I ordered that has a middle section disappeared into another volume.In fact, Amazon could have remedied the information gap by providing the description in the Product details, rather than copy-and-paste the promotional materials there.

I did not purchase this for a class, but as a new backyard stargazer that wanted to learn about astronomy in a little more depth than is provided in books like "Nightwatch". It is a textbook, obviously. However, I have found it to be a very accessible and enjoyable read with many fantastic illustrations to reinforce the concepts that it presents. Bear in mind that this is not a coffee table book, but a serious text of 750+ pages written to present, not just Astronomy, but the scientific method and observational evidence-based thinking to a collegiate audience of non-science majors. I am finding it to be a comprehensive treatment of astronomy, our solar system and the cosmos at large without being overwhelming. Astronomy Today will be a very rewarding read for those willing to put the time into it.

I purchased this text for our daughter, who is taking an introductory astronomy class. I never had the chance to take such a class myself but always had an interest in astronomy, so I started reading some of the chapters. To my great satisfaction, it was actually very well written, concise, and seemed to be up to date on the some of the more interesting and current issues in astronomy- dark matter/energy, inflationary universes, black holes, etc. It has an excellent explanation of black body radiation and how the emission profile of a celestial object gives can disclose both its temperature and much about its composition. It also takes care to show exactly what portion of the light specturm is used to generate each image (of which there are many beautiful ones included), which really helps understand why optical telescopes can't solve all the scientific mysteries (the center of the Milky Way can't even be seen in the visual spectrum due to dust). It also used a minimal amount of math, which takes away nothng from the points made. As a parent tired of forking over hundreds of dollars for textbooks that unnecessarily change edition every year (how is that possible, I ask?), I did not mind paying for this one.Kudos to the authors for a very readable and useful text. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn about astronomy but never had the opportunity. The only material that I thought might be improved was the section covering the H-R diagrams of star evolution- it would help to have a simple diagram of a typical star as it progresses through the main sequence and beyond, gaining or losing mass. the luminosity and temperature portions of the process are well described, but it's a bit hard to put it all together. Is the H-R diagram really the most useful way to understand star evolution? Regardless, this book rates as an outstanding science textbook in my opinion.

This is the first and only astronomy textbook I have ever read. I was hooked to the content right away. The book is so interesting that I now understand why so many people loves astronomy. Definitely worthy reading and own the book!

This is the first astronomy text that I have read. I found it to be excellent. The illustrasions are very well chosen & complement the text well. The style of writing is pleasant. I preffered it to the novel that I was also reading! It is light on math but there is so much for a novice to learn that was probably best. Each chapter is around 20 pages which for an easy 1 day read.

Lovely and beautifully designed text with plenty of diagrams and simple explanations for many cosmic events!

It was a very good book to read for my course. It is very much to the point and nowhere near as confusing as I thought it would be.

This is just what every South'ner needs - You name a song about the War, & it's probably here! With 416 pages, (31 of text, 8 of Table of Contents) you'll probably find the lyrics here. I know there's "Dixie", "Farewell to the Star Spangled Banner", "The Bonnie Blue Flag", "My Maryland", "God Save the South", "Stonewall Jackson's Way", & "You Can Never Win Them Back",because I looked them up! Plus there are poems praising the South, various Generals, Jefferson Davis, etc. for the nominal cost, this is a steal!!!! ...and besides that, there are lyrics here to use to curse mr. L too!

I bought this for my husband because he said it was the best book ever. He used to have it but loaned it to a friend who never returned it. He loves it cause it has true civil war hymns in it

It's in very good shape. It's thick and has a lot of songs, poems, and sheet music. It's a fine book overall, but it's missing some songs that I would have loved to see in it. 'Rose of Alabamy' and 'I'm a Good Ol' Rebel' are two of my favorites, and I was sad to see that they weren't included.

So, this study guide provides three full length tests. Excellent! However, it only gives an introduction into explaining the test exam preparation and what to expect. Inside, are also the how to score on the exam. This book would be more beneficial to those who have another test prep book to study the content or taken courses on the exam content and only need this book to practice. Perfect for practicing taking the test to see if one is ready or not to take it. If that is what you need, then this guide is for you. I recommend it for test taking. Answers and explanations are provided in great details.I received this copy from the publisher. This is my voluntary review.

You can order, for free, the MBLEx Essential Test Tips video - information on how to do that is on the first page, so be sure you get yours as it may help!This review book is set up in three exams. At the end of each one are the answers, but its not just the answer to #1 is D, it explains why that answer is correct. Perhaps as important, it explains why each of the other answers are incorrect. I much prefer this format as if I choose the wrong answer I want to know WHY its wrong. This saves me a lot of time going back and finding why what I thought was right was actually wrong... I also like this as I can review a few questions if I don't have much time.The book itself is 72 pages long, which is small enough to be easily carried for a quick review.I received a copy of this book for free from the publisher, this is my voluntary review.

I like how the book begins with some general overview information about massage therapy, etc before going into the test questions. I like that the book breaks down the different components that comprise the test (pharmacology, ethics, etc) and I like that there are quite a few different practice questions offered. I really like that the answer keys clearly explain why each answer is correct and why the other choices are not. This book would be appropriate for a person who has been in massage therapy school and is looking to take the certification exam soon. It would also be good for a person considering massage therapy to get a feel for all that is entailed.
