What soldier in the Southern states has has not had every nerve thrilled as the band would strike up "Dixie"? It is true that we cannot find much evidence of genius at such times, nor the production of nature and thoughtful study. Such poems and songs are sparks and flames from the fires of war, and high literary merit must not be expected. But if you wish to find the hearts of the people you will hear it in their songs. It has been a delightful task to me in the past year to collect from all q! uarters of the South these songs and poems, and so to rescue from oblivion the productions which are dear to every Southern heart and home. This is just what every South'ner needs - You name a song about the War, & it's probably here! With 416 pages, (31 of text, 8 of Table of Contents) you'll probably find the lyrics here. I know there's "Dixie", "Farewell to the Star Spangled Banner", "The Bonnie Blue Flag", "My Maryland", "God Save the South", "Stonewall Jackson's Way", & "You Can Never Win Them Back",because I looked them up! Plus there are poems praising the South, various Generals, Jefferson Davis, etc. for the nominal cost, this is a steal!!!! ...and besides that, there are lyrics here to use to curse mr. L too!
I bought this for my husband because he said it was the best book ever. He used to have it but loaned it to a friend who never returned it. He loves it cause it has true civil war hymns in it
It's in very good shape. It's thick and has a lot of songs, poems, and sheet music. It's a fine book overall, but it's missing some songs that I would have loved to see in it. 'Rose of Alabamy' and 'I'm a Good Ol' Rebel' are two of my favorites, and I was sad to see that they weren't included.
