I'll start by saying that I've always found cults and cult stories interesting. Not in a morbid, I'm going to go join one sort of way, just in the sense that all the psychology and mystery behind it can be so fascinating! This story gripped me from the start and still held my interest right up until the end. I usually get to read on my way to and from work which is around a half hour to forty minutes on the bus either way, so I found myself looking forward to getting to and from work more than usual.Twig is a character you find easy to like from the get go and you definitely come to understand her Mum, Avery's, actions and behaviour more as the story develops.I would have liked a little more on the background of the Leader, Adam. I wasn't outright disappointed, more just curious and wanted more of the story.I can see where some readers where coming from when they said they felt like the story wrapped up a little too quickly, although I can also see how dragging the last section out more could have grown tedious also. The ending was very abrupt and definitely left you with questions and wanting more so I would absolutely LOVE a sequel to this novel. However it is still a good read in my opinion. If a book can leave you wanting more, it's always worth it!
This is a fast-paced, suspenseful and well-written novel. It's for a young-adult audience in the sense that it is fast-paced, but thematically, it's very mature. I especially liked the fact that even though the main character is isolated throughout her childhood, she's still a "normal" teenager, pulled in different directions, questioning everything, including her own judgement. The portrayal of her mom and the fact that the story deals realistically with mental illness was a welcome change from the way those kinds of issues are sometimes glossed over in this genre. I hope the author is planning a sequel--I'd like to see how the next chapter of Twig's life unfolds.
This was a captivating book. The world that Marissa Kennerson has created is so rich and developed, it felt as if I were reading a true account of someone's life. I immediately felt for Twig and her odd existence in this very disturbing "Family." It felt all too possible and was scary to think about the children who are raised in these communities. There's even a much larger and still functioning cult today called "The Family" (formerly Children of God) that I feel is even more sinister in design. The poor children who honestly don't know any better. This book really shines a light on what it's like from one of those children's point of view. Twig is kept so innocent and misinformed in the beginning that it's an eye-opener on so many levels for her when she is injured and needs to visit the real world. I felt her pain when she finally realized just how much she had been lied to her whole life. The leader, Adam, was so believable in his manipulative cruelty. He brought to mind so many terrible people from history in the way that he totally deceived and programmed these people to have faith in nothing but him. The most difficult part of the book for me was finding ANY compassion for Twig's mother, Avery. Even after she finally admits her backstory to Twig later in the book, I still found myself shaking my head and wanting to scream at her for involving her innocent daughter in her own foolish decisions. I understand that the victims of these organizations are totally snowed over and have no idea what they are really getting into, but it just seemed so irresponsible to involve anyone but herself. Sadly, though, I'm sure this happens much too often. This book kept me biting my nails up until the very end. Definitely worth a read!
The Family is an elegant and insightful YA book recommended for adults. The story gives us a peek into the cult world through the eyes of a seventeen year old girl who comes of age questioning her belief system. I was absorbed from page one and felt the tension of Twig’s explorations…from blind devotion required in a cult family, to doubt as she came of age, to tentative discovery as she embraced the outside world. Kennerson’s characters and suspenseful plot twists had me shifting through a mass of emotions…anger, frustration, sadness, happiness, angst, relief. There just has to be a sequel…I want more.
On the whole, I was excited about this book. I know, the premise of a girl coming of age and to terms with being in a cult is a little overdone but those always grip me for some reason. Anyway, it started strong, even though the dialogue got a little off for me midway through. There was a very strong subplot that I enjoyed watching play out. However the ending was by far the most disappointing, lazy cop out of an ending I've ever read. The author did so good, built this awesome romantic interest (not to mention spent all this time teasing at the protagonist's mother) and took it further than I've ever seen taken in a book like this then just shut the door. I was so disappointed I literally yelled "no!" when I realized it had ended that way. If you enjoy being raised up and becoming engrossed in a story only to be cut off from the natural climax; buy this. If not, pass on it. It's that bad.
