First Grade Computer Basics The Computer and Its Parts is a great little book distributed by Speedy Publishing and sold on amazon by Baby Professor. This book is a wonderful place for students to start if they want to learn the various parts of a computer and how each part works.Let's be honest, this generation of children are way more technologically savvy than the one before, and can probably do more and understand more about computers than most adults. Still, many young children are unable to identify parts of a computer and explain how they work. For example, one of the computers in my classroom started acting up and IT took the computer to fix it, leaving behind just a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Several of my students, current and former, are perplexed that my computer no longer works, not even noticing that a major component of the computer is missing.Enter Computer Basics. This book goes through the parts of a computer, names them, and explains how they work. This book is a phenomenal introduction to basic computers and how they work. I think children of all ages could benefit from reading this book.I was offered this product at a discount in exchange for an honest review.
The first few pages of this book were promising compared to the other titles I've read from Baby Professor. They were accessible, short sentences, with age appropriate content. Then once we got to the meat of the book we run into the same problems that are Baby Professor's trademark. A 1st-grader will not benefit from a book where words like "alphanumeric" and "function key" are tossed around casually without any context. Moreover, this book doesn't really take into account that 1st graders probably understand these computer things much more intuitively than the adults reading this book with/to them. This is clearly demonstrated by the sentence, "The monitor looks like a television." 1st graders who were born in the 2000s and later almost certainly know what a computer monitor is, and won't need that kind of comparison. Thus, the authors of this book come across as out of touch. Moreover... only desktops use monitors. Nowadays most people don't have computer monitors.... hahahaha.... I received this book for free for my honest review. And I honestly wouldn't buy it for my kid.
I received this book from Speedy Publishing. I remember having to learn computer basics when I was in school, although I was much older than first grade, which is the grade level which this book is geared toward. This is first grade computer basics, all about the computer and its parts. The book included a lot of cartoon pictures of kids seeming to have a party around a computer or something. I felt that the explanation of what a computer does was very simplified. The section on the parts of the computer was great, in my opinion. I would have liked for the book to have correct grammar and sentence structure. Punctuation was left out and there were a couple of other errors. If you are writing an educational book you should pay attention to those types of things. The illustrations looked realistic and looked like the real parts of a typical computer. This is a good starter book for kids who are trying to learn the parts of the computer. It is very basic but with the pictures and short text it should be easy for them to remember what each part of the computer is called and the main idea behind it. I ordered this book for my seven year old, she knows about the computer, but I was looking to broaden her horizon on the subject, my two year old was also interested in the book asking questions as we read. I love the fact that the book uses short, very simple terms that a child of any age can understand. The pictures are nice too. A little more information about the computer would be nice, this is very basic, but for now that's ok! I received this book a a discount for my honest review.
I ordered this book for my four year old, he knows a little bit about the computer, from using ABC mouse, he wasn't too interested in ABC mouse. My son is on the Autism spectrum, on the mild end, but he still has very limited interests. I ordered this for him, so we could read it together. It's part of me trying to broaden his horizons and get him interested in some new things.I love the fact that the book uses short, very simple terms that a child of any age can understand. The pictures are nice too. A little more information about the computer would be nice, this is very basic, but for now that's ok! Since it is geared toward younger kids, I wish it would have a topic about how computers are sensitive, and we have to be gentle, and shouldn't eat or drink near the computer. I plan on reading it to him a few times a week, and then introducing him to some other fun learning websites, that he can use. As of now all he uses is a tablet, and he isn't playing learning games, he's watching videos on his few topics he is interested in.I depend on reviews when deciding to purchase a product, a lot of the times reviews will sway me one way or another. With that being said if you found my review to be helpful, please press the helpful button. Please note, I received this item discounted in exchange for my testing, inspecting and reviewing it. I received no compensation for my review and state my honest and unbiased opinion of the product.
