In Bittersweet Brooklyn, Thelma Adams shows us a family living rather dark lives, and yet she manages to make them into sympathetic characters. The historical details enrich the novel, and lots of strong dialogue makes it feel fast-paced. The story had me in its grips from page one and continues to haunt me. Kudos to the author for wrenching so much emotion out of me. A great read.
A gorgeously written and gritty American immigrant tale about broken homes and broken hearts, and how the sins within a family can reverberate across generations. Riveting!
This is a fantastic book. Great story, engaging characters and I loved the sense of history. But more than anything else, it's the story and what the Thelma Lorber goes through in her life. The ending blew me away. I really couldn't put this book down.
This book has nothing but remorse of a family in it. If you thought the book would be exciting with a sister and a brother with "mob" ties-think again!!! I love books-I love reading-but this was the worst waste of time I have ever had with a book.
This time period is fascinating to me. I especially liked learning more about Murder Inc. Thelma Adams did a wonderful job portraying New York in the early 1900s, with authenticity and heart. I was cheering for the main character the entire time. I didn't want the story to end!
Yes was fast read kept my interest to the end. Was not what I expected but enjoyed. Was interesting to learn about the history of New York in the early 1900s. Have recommended this to several others
The story line was deep, filled with human frailty but also strength. It's still in my head, weeks after I've finished it. I highly recommend it....and I especially loved the author's imaginative descriptions!
