This perhaps the best resource available for scientific programming. It is filled with code samples and mathematical theory. The book assumes a thorough knowledge of mathematics and physics as well as good skills in writing fortran code. Since the book contains only pseudocode, the "recipes" are applicable to all FORTRAN standards (except FORTRAN IV through 60). Time to let go of Hollerith numbers.

It gives a good description of numerical algorithms. What interested me with the discussion of Lanczos coeffiecients to evaluate the gamma function was that the solutions are not unique and a different set of coefficients might be found which makes the algorithm more efficient. They don't mention that in the book. Maybe this applies to other algorithms in the book?

Out of date now - you need the latest versions

This was my first ever internet purchase, back in 98 I think, Amazon was better known for selling CDs (!) rather than books, and this edition was priced so ridiculously affordable that against my better instincts, I entered my credit card details on the web-form. Well, not quite. It was a couple of friends a year behind in our bachelor's program for Mechanical engineering, and they couldn't figure out Numerical Methods, one of the "filter subjects" that required you to learn Fortran in time for the first due projects, which meant going from "Huh? Pascal?" to efficient algorithms in Fortran in 3 weeks flat. I now realise that was not an exersise in programming know how, but rather a life lesson on facing impossible odds, which if we had not learned at the time, would have caught us bare naked as newbie Mechanical Engineers. That did not stop us from trying and getting this amazing book that goes trough each algorithm in exquisite detail. and although we were typing nonsense on our terminals for all we knew, sincelearning fortran in that timeframe, let alone writing a decent sort on it, was an impossible task, the programs ran! and worked! and gave us the expected results! All fine and dandy with Newton-Raphson and Chebyshev polynomials which this book brilliantly explains. Then we had to figure out Faddeev-Leverrier as this method is supposed to be the most computationally efficient way to get the Eigenvalues and thus roots of Linear Equation systems.Wait. I beg your pardon? Fadeev WHO?Good luck trying to find anything remotely different from actual greek explaining how that is supposed to work, especially since Russian and French Mathematicians were not in vogue with the numerical crowd at MIT that wrote all these wonderful "recipes" books. One person knew that: our teacher. that happened to be the Director of the ME program. and also, the one who told us "Almos did it, didn't you?" "now learn proper fortran, if you want to pass my course, were A is for God the creator, B is for me, the teacher and these brilliant but underrated russians; and all of you lot can aspire at most to a measly C."That we did. and this book has been with me since, as a reminder that we must all face impossible odds, and no matter how ingenious you are, sometimes you must lose. Even if i did not learn to quicksort in fortran from this book, I cherish it for what it represents.If you're trying to cheat your way out of Numerical Methods by doing a quick lookup on this text, you'd be better off getting a more recent or mainstream language version of this book, perhaps Fortran 90 or even the C or Python version. If, however, you want to understand the math behind these powerful algorithms, do it in fortran 77. Linux will compile and run your programs. they will be undeliverable and unacceptable in source form for anyone to review them.But you'll know what the secret sauce that makes a bubble sort tick is, in any language. even JavaScript *shudders*

First, I want to weigh in on the general controversy over Press et al.'s treatment of the code as proprietary. This is a joke and I think was basically intended as such. A lot of the odd job programming world still works on the honor system, and it works, because enough of us respect what is done right and we respect other people's labor. But if you've already plunked down your $60 for the book, and you have a program that in some sense you are paid for (not that you're Adobe or someone big), they expect you to be crawling to them for permission to use a single routine. And yet these routines make use of other routines that I really doubt they wrote. I see the same basic code floating around a number of places. And for some things, it's so straightforward it seems crazy to say that it is "their" routine.At the same time, the code is clear, well explained with examples, and--most important--easy to modify. Given a choice between two versions, one which was elegant but a bit confusing and one that was straightforward, they did the second.Given that there's a new edition, and that we are 30 years past FORTRAN 77, you might wonder whether this book should still be in circulation. But there are a lot of industrial machines that are still running programs written in 77, say for process control, and it's nice to be able to alter them as opposed to starting from scratch. For example, you might find that a minimization routine actually can help for a program running the control of a valve in a mixing vat. Some of these routines are slow, but my attitude is, that just gives you more time to drink your coffee and look around, though of course, you might not like what you see. [12]

This volume, and its companions for other programming languages, is an absolute classic. The authors strike the right balance between cookbook solutions and theory, so that most of us get just enough background to choose the right algorithm but not so much to get drowned in theory. This edition is the first devoted only to Fortran, but is the second edition published by the authors. It includes a number of additions and corrections, many of which appeared in Computers in Physics (now the journal Computing in Science and Engineering published jointly by the IEEE and the APS). My only criticism is, where were these books twenty years ago when I needed them? I would recommend these books to anyone involved in the application of numerical methods. They are tremendous time savers.I never bothered with the discs, as most of the routines are fairly short and not a problem to type in, but I recommend the companion example books to help get the routines running.
