very easy and explanatory language for what could be a dense/confusing subject. Paul Portner is a great writer.

Although Portner writes with a charming style and makes difficult problems of semantics clear, yet I feel he didn't answer the question printed on its cover. The different approaches to semantics, and their relation to the formal approach, still remain mystery to me. The lambda-abstraction was barely touched, and semantic calculus wasn't even mentioned.I've enjoyed reading it, but I must say I'd rather have purchased a more comprehensive textbook.

Although all have their merits, out of the three introductory semantics texts I read, I would recommend this book to those who are curious or beginning to explore the subject. Portner's writing is exceptionally paced, and at times quite entertaining (relative to textbooks in general, not just those for formal semantics).The thought exercises and line-art diagrams are well constructed and organized, and the discussions related to set theory and pragmatics were especially helpful.

This textbook gets the highest rating, for it's simply the go-to text on college-level semantics. I do really appreciate the fact that the book's chapters can be read in either a sequential fashion or as stand-alone learning resources. The Portner textbook is the absolute authority in introductory linguistics.

Characterization is weak and plot is nearly non-existent. Although die-hard fans of the Pern series may not care.Also uninspired is Robert Jordan's entry "New Spring," which is a prequal to his Wheel of Time series. Like the Wheel books, the writing is tired and the plot plodding.The strongest entry is The Hedge Knight by George R. R. Martin. It is a stand-alone story set in the world of Song of Ice and Fire. Following the death of his mentor, Dunk, 17 finds himself knighted (a "Hedge Knight"--a knight unattached to a lord who sleeps among the hedges) and alone. He travels to the city to join a contest for Hedge Knights and make a name for himself. He is joined by 9-year-old Egg, a boy who insists on squiring for him. Dunk soon finds himself involved over his head with royalty, and about to lose his life. The writing is sharp and witty and the characters are compelling.A close second is "The Burning Man" by Tad Williams, the story of certain pivotal events in a young woman's life--her first love and her stepfather's obsessive quest for the answer to a question that haunts him and nearly drives him to madness.Other entries are by Terry Pratchett, Terry Goodkind, Orson Scott Card, Robert Silverberg, Ursula LeGuin, Tad Williams, and Raymond E. I bought this book because one of my great great uncles, Bruce Banks, was supposedly on this ship when it sank (he is listed as one of the passengers in the appendix). I was hoping to find more specific information about him. The most interesting thing about this book was the description of how much trouble the author went through to research it.

The story of the CLARA NEVADA is a fascinating yet little-known puzzle of Alaska/Yukon gold rush history. I've been interested in the story for a long time, but information on what happened has been extremely sparse, and often contradictory. Steven C. Levi researched the story and has created the most complete picture of what may have happened.The results are surprising. Southeast Alaska's waters are full of shipwrecks. Many of them are from the gold rush era, and it seems like every single one of them sank with a "fortune in gold" aboard. This has caused many of those who have described the wreck to any extent in the past to dismiss the gold that was known to be on board CLARA NEVADA as a false rumor, since it was never found. They dismiss "stories" of survivors and a wrecked lifeboat as rumors as well. Levi did the work, and has come up with an extremely plausible reconstruction of what likely happened. He tells it matter-of-factly, without over-the-top prose or hyperbole. The result is an excellent history mystery of the Gold Rush. It's a great read!

THE CLARA NEVADA is one of those rare books that on the surface seems to be a thesis, an academic investigation of an event of significance in history complete with photographs, immaculate documentation, and reportage by a fine reporter. And it is most assuredly all that. But that does not begin to explain the fascination author Steven C. Levi brings to this book. He makes this exploration of an event as fine as any mystery novel or suspense thriller, and it is about something of which very few of us are familiar. How many readers have heard of the ship Clara Nevada and its sole voyage in Alaska's Inland Passage?Levi opens his book about the mysterious ship Clara Nevada with a solid description of the 1896 discovery of gold in the Yukon River and the subsequent goldrush fever that swept the nation, bringing thousands of gold seekers to Seattle and points north to claim instant wealth. His discussion (and photographs) of the condition of these people willing to sacrifice all manner of comfort to pan gold is as colorful as any film would be! And those who owned the businesses of the newly discovered area of gold jumped into the fray and produced boats and means of travel etc to benefit form the madness. Among the ships was a 'reconditioned' wreck named the Clara Nevada and after boarding many passengers and supplies she set sail in bad weather in 1898 to take greedy men to the gold nuggets of the Yukon and Klondike rivers - and disappeared. The book then explores all of the witnessed events, the newspaper reports and the tall tales that filled the country - including the history of one CH Lewis who happened to survive leaving questions unanswered to this day. What happened? Where did the bodies go, where did the gold on board go, where did the fate of a ship that eventually was spotted as a ghost ship become a fairytale? as the author states, 'The discovery of a survivor of the Clara Nevada disaster - and a significant individual at that - led to two obvious questions: how did C.H. Lewis survive and what happened to the $165,000. in raw gold? I was haunted by those questions. For two years, I checked archive holdings, government reports, diaries, personal correspondence, business records and court files and sent letters to genealogical societies and maritime museums.'Levi has spent years preparing his investigation and the results are here in this immensely readable book. It is a bit a Americana but it is also a vital document about a period in history we have all but forgotten. Steven C. Levi is a scholar but he is also an imaginative writer who has provided us with a brief but completely engrossing little book that is better than most fiction created around this subject. This is the first comprehensive directory to document many of the founders and leaders of what is now often referred to as the second wave of feminism, between 1963 and 1975. It includes biographical sketches of about 2,200 individuals, mostly women, who reignited the women's movement of the early twentieth century and managed to make permanent changes in customs and laws. The biographical sketches represent many factions, all parts of the country, all races and ethnicities, and many political ideologies. Editor Love has worked as an editor, writer, and journalist, and she is currently on the board of the Veteran Feminists of America (VFA), a nonprofit organization for veterans of the second wave of the feminist movement. Alphabetically arranged, each entry includes a brief description of the role the person played in the movement. Entries include such diverse persons as authors, members of rock bands like Deadly Nightshade, sociologists, politicians, NOW leaders, and cartoonists. Much of the information was supplied by the subjects themselves, and all biographies were sent to the subjects for approval. There are a small number of black-and-white photographs in the center of the book; the only thing that could have made the book better would have been pictures of all the people included. The name index at the end of the volume includes not just the names of the people profiled in the sketches but also other people mentioned in those sketches. Although numerous other works cover individuals who were active in the movement, there does not appear to be any other work that chronicles so many of the people who were active over this course of time. Significant Contemporary American Feminists: A Biographical Sourcebook (Greenwood, 1999) offers a small sampling of the women in the current volume. About the Author

William Glover received his B.B.A. from the University of Mississippi in 1973 and his J.D. from the University of Mississippi School of Law in 1976. He joined the firm of Wells Marble & Hurst in May 1976 as an Associate and became a Partner in 1979. While at Wells, his practice involved real estate commercial loan transactions, employment law cases, estate administration and general commercial law. He joined the faculty of Belhaven University, in Jackson, MS, in 1996 as Assistant Professor of Business Administration and College Attorney. While at Belhaven he taught Business Law and Business Ethics in the BBA and MBA programs; Judicial Process and Constitutional Law History for Political Science Department); and Sports Law for the Department of Sports Administration. As College Attorney he dealt with Real Estate and Employment Law issues, including matters before the Office of Civil Rights of the Department of Education. He left Belhaven in 2004 for a short stay at Wells Marble & Hurst, PLLC, as General Counsel and then joined the staff of US Legal Forms, Inc., in January of 2007, where he drafts forms, legal digests, and legal summaries. I have been hearing of essential oils for several years, but didn’t really understand what all the excitement was about. Then I got ahold of Essential Oils for Beginners, which really helped me to understand what an essential oil is, what it’s good for, and how to use it. The book is very easy to read and understand for a newbie like me, yet it doesn’t “talk down” to the reader. Anyone, from a beginner like me, to someone who regularly uses essential oils can benefit from all the information in this book. It tells all about the various oils, what plants they come from, how to apply the oils, and what ailments or other issues they are good for. It also tells you how not to use the oils, and how to use them carefully for the desired results. There are also around fifty recipes for blending oils for various uses that will be very helpful. The section detailing each plant, what part is used for oil extraction, and photos of each plant was of particular interest to me as a beginner. The book is clean, well laid out, and usefully organized. If you’re interested in essential oils, you should get this book.

I was happy to see that Mary Jones has written another book on essential oils. I had read her book, “Essential Oils for Dogs,” and found it to be informative, well-written and well-organized. Her “Essential Oils for Beginners: The Where To & How To Guide For Essential Oil Beginners” has all those same attributes, but it is written with humans as its focus, and it goes into more detail that pertains just to humans.The format of this beginners’ book makes for a very quick read – from the general introductory material about essential oils, their history and how and why they work, to the more detailed chapters on the top 15 essential oils you can use in aromatherapy and the top 30 all-around essential oils, to the very helpful glossary of essential oil terms that comes toward the end of the book.I also found very helpful the book’s links to several videos. Sometimes it’s good just to listen to someone talk and watch a demonstration so you don’t wear your eyes out from reading text.Last weekend, I attended a baby shower for a friend who is about to have her first baby. She is quite nervous, but thanks to the chapter entitled “50 Little Known Essential Oil Recipes,” I now know what I am going to give her as a post-baby shower gift. I am going to make up a diffusing blend of lavender, frankincense, ylang ylang, and Roman chamomile to ease her labor pains. From what I read in the chapter on aromatherapy, diffusing that scent in my friend’s hospital room may have the added effect of protecting her from those airborne infections so prevalent in hospital settings.I have been having a bit of a problem lately with my memory, so when I saw in one of the introductory chapters that essential oils may be used to help with memory loss, I put in a search for “memory” so I could find out more. What I discovered is that rosemary is the essential oil to use for memory loss. Not only that, but it also helps to soothe aching, cramping muscles. So, I’m adding rosemary oil to my list.I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how to safely and inexpensively use essential oils to, among other things, ease pain, enhance brain performance, protect the heart, and prevent infection.

I'd whip up the weight loss blend if I had the ingredients right now. And the most common mistakes are also mentioned.The book ends with a very useful glossary and FAQ section.I recommend you read this book if, like me, you've only just begun showing an interest in essential oils. She has a record in writing such critical thinking topics and debates justifying her place as a well known emeritus professor. I enjoy her consistencies in current issues that at times rebutt older philosophies of education putting us forward to current thinking.
