The author has chosen plain and simple language to inspire the reader to take a chance and not worry how people may judge you. Generally you should ignore the people who endlessly criticize things. Instead listen closely to the people who are busy doing things. This author is obviously the latter of those two kinds of people.

The author avoids complexities and ties various sources of wisdom together in a helpful and encouraging read. His own honest experience in this provides a humility that makes the lessons more personable.

Just downloaded it and skim read in 20 minutes flat (which shows its complexity): sorry - it's not 'a fail' - but it's about as obvious and ordinary a pop psych book as is possible. And Mr Bathla, get a good editor, the English in here is woeful.

Let the reader beware. This book could have certainly used an editor who was proficient in English. I could not make heads or tails of it. It hurt my head to try to read it. Very disappointed.

This book deserves 10 stars !! I highly recommend this fabulous ,fairytaleesque ,love story to everyone! What an epic journey Lucinda Riley takes us on. Although the book is titled "The Seven Sisters", we son learn the story revolves around 6 adoptive daughters and the seventh so far is a mystery. When the sisters reunite at their childhood home, or castle,on Lake Geneva to mourn their fathers death, they soon learn there are plenty of secrets to go around. In this first installment of this series Riley focuses on Maia, the older of the clan. Each of the girls are given envelopes upon their fathers death that gives them each a clue as to their own heritage. Thus begins Maia's journey ,taking her to Rio in the 1920's. I love how this story intertwines the past and present while we learn about her true lienage of 2 incredible women and their courageous love stories!

Maia D'Apliese is the eldest of six girls adopted by the wealthy billionaire Pa Salt. After his sudden death the girls get together at their childhood home, a secluded mansion on the shores of Lake Geneva. There they learn about their father’s legacy and find clues that will allow them discover their ancestral origins.As with most of Lucinda Riley’s books the story is told over 2 timelines one set in the past and one in the present.In the book we follow Maia on her journey to uncover her roots, which takes her to Brazil and a dilapidated mansion in a wealthy suburb of Rio de Janeiro. As the story unfolds we learn from the past how Maia’s life is connected to Issabella Bonifacio and how the construction of the famous Christ statue on Corcovado Mountain in Rio is part her heritage. In the present we see how Maia copes with the loss of her adopted father while coming to grips with the knowledge of her familial beginnings. A journey of self-discovery, of learning to trust oneself and others in the process of healing.The story is vividly described, the characters are complex but interesting. They display real emotions like love and fear while demonstrating loyalty, passion and compassion, making them convincing and easy to relate to.From a historical perspective the book is also set in an interesting period in Rio de Janeiro. The 1920’s to 1930’s, the heydays, when coffee exports were booming at the time the Christ statue was under construction.This is the first book in the Seven Sisters series. Each book can be read separately as the plot concludes nicely at the end. Some teasers are left unanswered which helps set up the next book in the series but without leaving the reader hanging or forcing you to get the next book in the series.Overall this is an interesting evocative story. The book is well written and the story flows well. Fans of historical fiction and woman’s fiction will love it.

For me, this book started out so well - I really enjoyed the book's setup for what the series, the introduction of Pa and Marina, as well as the adoption and arrival of the 6 sisters, and beginnings of the mystery of the 7th. After Pa's death, the solicitor gives each sister a letter which, I expect will send them all off on a road trip to find their birth roots. And so we begin on eldest sister Maia journey to Rio and Paris, and then, for me, it slid into romantic tosh. I could tolerate one romantic thread, but not two. The historical story in particular was (for me) a grinding read, the contemporary tale was more bearable, but a little predictable. I remain, however, intrigued by the series' setup, and think I will go to book two (Ally's story?) because despite my boredome reading about the romances, I am curious about the overarching story (I just hope it has a little more complexity to it than the Rio leg).

This book was recommended by a friend. It took about a chapter to grab me and it didn;t let go. This is the first story in the series. There are six sisters all adopted by a very wealthy man in Geneva. He dies and leaves clues to the secret of each of their births. Fascinating and each story has sections that go way back in time to a key person that relates to the sister's birth history. Beautiful writing, fascinating countries. I am now on book three then will have to wait for book four!

About the Author

Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 - April 21, 1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American writer, entrepreneur, publisher and lecturer. Among his novels are The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), the latter often called "The Great American Novel." Twain was raised in Hannibal, Missouri, which later provided the setting for Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. After an apprenticeship with a printer, Twain worked as a typesetter and contributed articles to the newspaper of his older brother, Orion Clemens. He later became a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River before heading west to join Orion in Nevada. He referred humorously to his lack of success at mining, turning to journalism for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise. In 1865, his humorous story "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" was published, based on a story he heard at Angels Hotel in Angels Camp, California, where he had spent some time as a miner. The short story brought international attention, and was even translated into classic Greek. His wit and satire, in prose and in speech, earned praise from critics and peers, and he was a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty. Though Twain earned a great deal of money from his writings and lectures, he invested in ventures that lost a great deal of money, notably the Paige Compositor, a mechanical typesetter, which failed because of its complexity and imprecision. In the wake of these financial setbacks, he filed for protection from his creditors via bankruptcy, and with the help of Henry Huttleston Rogers eventually overcame his financial troubles. Twain chose to pay all his pre-bankruptcy creditors in full, though he had no legal responsibility to do so. Twain was born shortly after a visit by Halley's Comet, and he predicted that he would "go out with it", too. He died the day after the comet returned. He was lauded as the "greatest American humorist of his age," and William Faulkner called Twain "the father of American literature." The novel is set in the fictional town of St. Petersburg, inspired by Hannibal, Missouri, where Twain lived.

Kindle version is not bad. The chapter numbers seem to get off my 1 at some point for Tom Sawyer, but didn't seem to be missing text. I bought the Kindle version to read when I don't have the book (another publisher with both books as well). Other than the chapter numbers, it was a good format - although not much to get wrong I guess. I think most physical books have a few maps and fancy fonts on some parts, but that's not vital to the story.As far as the stories go, I've read both at least a couple of times when they were required reading in middle school and later. Tom Sawyer the book is fun without much meaning, except the joys of childhood. However, I didn't realize how annoying the character of Tom Sawyer was - seems to be the Bart Simpson of the time. Huck Finn was the annoying one before, but as an adult I realize how smart and moral he was, especially for his time and situation. Huck Finn the book is great too, but with much more symbolism and message, if you can get past the chapters with Tom going on and on about doing the adventure right.

I was looking for an illustrated Huckleberry Finn, and I was looking on the web for a list of all different illustrated versions of the book. I was surprised to see that Norman Rockwell had done a version. So there were two of my favorite things - the writing of Mark Twain, and the art of Normal Rockwell, together in one place. The Rockwell illustrations are fully developed paintings, so there are not that many of them, but they are all compelling. He understands that the books are fun, but with a serious side, and the illustrations strike a perfect balance of that. I don't think this version is in print, so you will have to buy it used. On a slightly different note, I found the list of all the different illustrated Huckleberry Finns, because someone had analyzed all the illustrated versions to see how racist the illustrations of Jim were. The author of that paper felt that Rockwell's illustrations, done in the 1950s, were less racist than earlier versions, but still racist. I disagree, Rockwell's genius was to show people as people really are, and I thought he showed Jim (who is only in one or two of his illustrations), exactly as the person he was - not degrading him, but not overly super noble, either.

= It was nice to go back over a couple of old-time favorites again, after more than a half century. Mark Twain is hard to beat.= Of course I have to agree with most critics that "Huckleberry Finn" is by far the better of the two stories, but only till Tom Sawyer shows up near the end and turns that part of the plot topsy-turvy. Miles Donald, who wrote an introduction to this edition, proposes a rationale for this ending - but it is not altogether convincing.= The (physical) book is excellent with regard to binding, typography, etc. Some explanatory features have been added, including a chronology extending from 1803 (32 years before Clemens' birth, till 7 years after his death when his last (?) book was published posthumously. This list has columns for "Author's life," "Literary Context," and contemporary "Historical Events."

Bought this for my adventurous 9 yr old Grandson who is an avid reader. He had never heard of it nor of Mark Twain. Seriously ? I guess Mark Twain is no longer worthy of mention in the schools. Anyway, I gave him a quick rundown of the book and now he can't wait for it to get here. We already discussed the not so politically correctness of it and he's cool with it. I read this in it's entirety a very very long time ago over one sleepless weekend when I was 9 ! It didnt hurt me, I doubt it will hurt him.

The book is very large and I'm not talking about volume wise. It's as wide and tall as a magazine if not bigger then the two novels are strangely formatted. It seems like a size 10 font with no spacing at all making it very hard to read. The size of the book makes it very uncomfortable to hold and read for any extended period of time.

This is a homemade reprint and includes the formatting from kindle. It has symbols in the middle of words! It is VERY difficult to read!!! I just opened it and am going to initiate a return immediately. If you look at all the positive reviews, they are for the kindle addition, NOT the paperback. You'll have to find another version of this classic story, do NOT buy this one.

I signed up for a Class to discuss this book, but I had never read it before. I am not quite finished (almost), and first class discussion is in 2 weeks. So I am excited to be part of the discussion. So the "jury is out" at the moment!

This book is in the words of Twain Himself. It is not some present day politically correct piece of junk. It is the real thing. the stories about Huck and Tom could as easily be history lessons as just reading enjoyment as they were pictures of a time as well a life stile.

About the Author

Father Paul O'Sullivan, O.P., was born on February 7, 1871. After studying in Dublin, he went on to Rome, where he was ordained a Dominican. He then pursued a Lectorate degree for theology, which in turn prepared him for his future career in writing simple, profound books and preaching to the faithful. This beautiful little book inspired me to have a devotion to the Holy Spirit which I had never even thought of.This author is one of my favorites because he speaks so beautifully to the reader about God more like a teacher who is telling you his life secrets.One of his writing styles is to include stories and anecdotes of the saints which pertain to the subject he is teaching about which makes it come alive.I highly recommend!

Devotions and prayers to the Holy Spirit. Explains the history of the devotions and why a close relationship with the Holy Spirit is such a benefit to our soul and our salvation. I've received many graces through the use of the prayers in this excellent little booklet.

I purchased this on Kindle and have yet to receive it – please correct!Thank you--problem fixed! This little booklet was recommended by a priest friend, and did not disappoint. It is short, but inspiring and has helped me appreciate the action and need of the Holy Spirit in my daily life.

Over the course of eons humans have developed many psychological tools to help us simplify a complex world. In addition we are unconsciously motivated by social conventions that we acquire throughout our lives. The author refers to these automated responses as `Click, Whirr'. They happen without us even knowing and it takes a higher level of awareness to avoid the automated `Click, Whirr' in situations where it can be harmful. An example of an automatic response would be the belief that expensive = quality. The problem with getting rid of these automated responses is that they generally work quite well. Unfortunately there are people who recognize these idiosyncrasies and exploit them for personal gain.I'm sure the first thing on everyone's mind when considering whether or not to purchase this book is, `will it get me what I want'. In other words will you become better at influencing people? The answer is yes but at some cost. Most of the techniques in `Influence' would be considered poor form in polite society and devious in sales. The author doesn't really try and advocate using the techniques, only demonstrating their effectiveness. The techniques play on quirks of human psychology that have to do with conditioning, social conventions and traits that seem engrained in human genetics.The front cover has a quote encouraging marketers to pick up the book but in truth it has as much, if not more information to protect against unscrupulous salespeople as there is to assist them. This is a book that spans the gamut from techniques of successful waiters and car salesman to controlling techniques of men like Jim Jones to manipulations of entire nations. Before I was even done with the book I was already able to apply some of the things I learned to real world problems. The book is even helpful in giving advice on raising children. I may not be more persuasive but I feel better protected against those who might use tactics of persuasion on me.

As an author of books on selling, I keep an eye out for the best books on sales and sales psychology. This book is a game changer.In reply to the few one star reviews...It has been stated in the uncharitable reviews, that the entire content of the book could have been written in a few pages. I agree, at first look, this would seem true. The Harvard Business Review article "Harnessing the Science of Persuasion" by Cialdini, from their October 2001 issue....is a good example. You can even get the Six Principles from the books Table Of Contents...save yourself some time.But sales ideas have to not just be listed....not just explained...they have to be sold. Examples have to be given, Principles have to beexplained...we need proof. And you need the entire book to do that. The people who read a short article by the author, maybe read theideas...but nothing else happens. Salespeople are changed by the content of this book, like with all great sales books. For salespeople to benefit from a sales book, the ideas have to be explained, understood, proven, accepted, and made real. This book does that.I own perhaps 2,000 books on the subject of selling. This is certainly in the top 5.

It reminds me why being a skeptic and a cynic are so valuable and necessary, particularly in today's world. As Lily Tomlin said, people would often accuse her of being a cynic, but she found she could still barely keep up. In the book Robert Cialdini delineates the 6 ways a "compliance professional" will lead us down the yellow brick road - to do things which are often both foolish and against our self interests. I'm going to steal from the Wikipedia post and reprint these here:1. Reciprocity – People tend to return a favor, thus the pervasiveness of free samples in marketing. In his conferences, he often uses the example of Ethiopia providing thousands of dollars in humanitarian aid to Mexico just after the 1985 earthquake, despite Ethiopia suffering from a crippling famine and civil war at the time. Ethiopia had been reciprocating for the diplomatic support Mexico provided when Italy invaded Ethiopia in 1935. The good cop/bad cop strategy is also based on this principle.2. Commitment and consistency – If people commit, orally or in writing, to an idea or goal, they are more likely to honor that commitment because of establishing that idea or goal as being congruent with their self-image. Even if the original incentive or motivation is removed after they have already agreed, they will continue to honor the agreement. Cialdini notes Chinese brainwashing of American prisoners of war to rewrite their self-image and gain automatic unenforced compliance. Another example is children being made to repeat the Pledge of Allegiance each morning and why marketers make you close popups by saying “I’ll sign up later” or "No thanks, I prefer not making money”.3. Social proof – People will do things that they see other people are doing. For example, in one experiment, one or more confederates would look up into the sky; bystanders would then look up into the sky to see what they were seeing. At one point this experiment aborted, as so many people were looking up that they stopped traffic. See conformity, and the Asch conformity experiments.4. Authority – People will tend to obey authority figures, even if they are asked to perform objectionable acts. Cialdini cites incidents such as the Milgram experiments in the early 1960s and the My Lai massacre.5. Liking – People are easily persuaded by other people that they like. Cialdini cites the marketing of Tupperware in what might now be called viral marketing. People were more likely to buy if they liked the person selling it to them. Some of the many biases favoring more attractive people are discussed. See physical attractiveness stereotype.6. Scarcity – Perceived scarcity will generate demand. For example, saying offers are available for a "limited time only" encourages sales.The trick is that as the world gets more complex, these 6 things also provide us with social shortcuts, to keep on the straight and narrow with minimal effort. But this means we have to be vigilant - to make sure we are not being taken advantage of. He notes that we often get that funny feeling in the pit our stomach when we are being manipulated against our will, and he suggests using that feeling/intuition to our advantage - to recognize when we are at risk. One of the things I love about this book is that Cialdini himself is the first to admit that even with all he knows, even he was and is not immune, and he provides some very funny examples to show how he personally has been taken advantage of.This really is a must read book. In the same vein, the last thing on his list is a one sentence course on persuasion - the sentence being, "People will do anything for those who encourage their dreams, justify their failures, allay their fears, confirm their suspicions, and help them throw rocks at their enemies."I think one of the most amazing examples in his book concerns well publicized suicides, as there are not just the expected copy cat suicides, but also up to 10X more fatal aircraft and automobile crashes. It's amazing how little it takes to establish a new subconscious social norm. Our lizard brain betrays us more often than we might think.
