I received an Advance Reading Copy of The First Conspiracy by Brad Meltzer and John Mensch from the publisher (Flatiron Books) in exchange for an honest review. The First Conspiracy is scheduled for release on January 8, 2019.The First Conspiracy is not a novel, it is a glimpse into a piece of history. We are dropped into the months leading up to the Declaration of Independence and the war that it launches. The focus of this history is a group of men who are secretly associated with the British. This group of men has a plan. They are out to get George Washington.This story is told in third person, which makes sense for a history. The story jumps around in both place and time, following different people and their actions. Given that we are piecing together a conspiracy, the jumping made sense. What made less sense to me was the tense Meltzer chose to write in. This history is written in present tense. I think his goal was to make us feel a sense of urgency, make us feel tension and anxiety over how things were going to turn out. This did not work for me. Since this is a history, I knew from the beginning that the attempt to assassinate Washington was going to be unsuccessful. The choice of present tense just felt awkward.The down side to the jumping in time and space was that we never get a chance to really attach to any of the characters. While we see what individuals are doing, we don’t get close to any of them. This made it difficult for me to sink into the story. I felt very distant from the action and the people involved.I also struggled with the writing style Meltzer used. Meltzer is a bestselling author, who typically writes thrillers. I could see this in his approach to this history. His chapter lead ins and endings had the feel of what I see in thrillers. Again, this felt out of place to me. It felt as if he were trying to force a sense of excitement into the story, rather than mining and developing the intrigue that was inherent to this conspiracy tale.While this was an interesting story about a piece of history that I honestly did not know about, I did not love this book. I wanted to be immersed in this conspiracy, immersed in the plotting and intrigue. Instead, I was overly aware of the author and his stylistic devices.

In the US we are subject to sensational, yet dubious, newspaper headlines & web postings. Now we can add questionable “history books”The Secret Plot to Kill George Washington is based on nothing more than rumor & conjecture. The author provides only a handful of source facts and turns it into 410 pages of speculation and repetitive prose.In the books “Author’s Notes” Brad Meltzer writes about reaching out to historian Joseph Ellis who tells him that this topic will “…always be elusive” & Meltzer states “He was right”. Then the question begs, why try to write a book?

One can be forgiven for speculating as to what might have happened to our thirteen colonies if George Washington had been murdered in the conspiracy detailed in this excellent work by Brad Meltzer. What might be even more salient, however, is what America did become because the great man was NOT murdered. Much of what America has become is owed to those who stopped the plot to assassinate the father of our country.Imagine yourself as a writer. Now, assume you have stumbled across some disjointed information that indicates an attempt to kidnap or murder the one key figure in America's quest for self-governance. What would you do?Brad Meltzer probably has a little more backbone than most of us. As for myself, I might have entertained the thought to try writing a novel on the topic. With novels, people are more forgiving than with nonfiction. But, honestly, I probably would have given up after fifty or so pages.So, I bought Meltzer's book, including the Audible Whispersync edition so I could listen to it when actually reading was not possible. How was it?Excellent. From the get-go I was fascinated by the prospect, if not so thrilled with some of the early statements.What I mean is that, early on, (for just one example), Meltzer states:'...This small, inexperienced, poorly equipped group of soldiers needs to stand up to what is probably the biggest and most powerful military force in the world. By any normal measure, they don’t stand a chance—and Washington knows this, just as he knows that with every decision he makes, thousands of young soldiers’ lives could be lost...'Meltzer, Brad. The First Conspiracy (pp. 1-2). Flatiron Books. Kindle Edition.So, why does this bug me? Perspective. Through eight years of conflict, the total number who were killed by the fighting was 8,000. Yes, that is thousands, but is far less than one might suppose. When Meltzer stresses thousand of young soldiers lives could be lost, I imagine, readers are likely to conjure up far larger numbers in their minds.Yes, I know I am being a bit picky. I am merely trying to show how this otherwise terrific history falls short of being a great story for us today.The writing and editing are good.BOTTOM LINEI highly recommend this book for anyone interested in American colonial history. Remember to get the Audible edition and listen to it with you kids and/or parents.Four stars out of five.

Just finished Brad Meltzer’s latest novel “The First Conspiracy”. Instead of reading as a novel like his earlier books, it is a disjointed repetitive history book. In an attempt to make the book authentic, he uses quotes and turns around and rewrites the essence of quote. He keeps repeating the nature of his characters. I truly enjoyed his earlier books and was looking forward to this book. I am very disappointed with it.

Its actually a good bookWorth getting for the pictures I thinkBear in mind this is for kids. It brings up a lot of stuff though (the Technicolour Dream, the early footage of the group on Granada tv, etc) that I was really amazed byCovers the early days up to Saucerful, including the singles, and talks a little about the Wall and Dark Side, and the band getting back together at Live 8A mention of Syd passingAgain - this is for a kid - its a good intro to the band though, believe it or not! Its a short book. Excellent pictures of Syd and the later Floyd though. Not as bad as feared! And an excellent bibliography of books and dvds (St Tropez - 1970? thats a new one on me!)

Given that I was reading this on a Kindle, I found it very hard to maneuver back and forth between pages and sections. Seems there should be a more intuitive way for a person to access information from different sections such as compare restaurants in different neighborhoods.

The tourist information is decent, but navigation on the Kindle (for iPad) could be better. Also needs better maps -- why not an offline downloadable zoomable map? This is what e-media ought to specialize in.

It helped, but there's an updated version out now.

It's more descrpitive and helpful than other book on Hongkong- 10 Things to do in Hongkong- I bought recently from Amazon.

Great book for navigating Hong Kong!

Very good for sightseeing. Not so good for hotels and restaurants, as it leans to heavily on the ultra luxury places, but not enough on harder to find reasonable places. The best places can be found anywhere.

I bought this for a short trip to Hong Kong and Macau. I found the content really hard to organize and didn't give me an easy way to understand the city. I have used a number of different travel guides for other cities and this was first one that hasnt been helpful.

This book is rife with errors. We're on day two of our trip to Hong Kong and there have been two restaurants with incorrect addresses listed in the book. We're now going to have to triangulate every tip in the book online before we take any more of the Fodor's advice. Pretty frustrating.

In using the genre of fiction, readers will be grabbed by the tension, suspension and never-ending action of heroes who go where they are sent. These soldiers have been hand-picked, and their identity is supposed to be known by a few though as readers will see that might not be the case after all.It’s a well-crafted tale of being chosen to serve the country again though if caught they will be disavowed by the country they serve. I read the book in short order because it was so engaging and suspense filled! Plus, I love those who serve in the military as well as the family they leave to do so. While it is true that not all have happy ever after endings, readers can begin to understand why as the characters use their skills in a setting far removed from everyday life here. They also come home at times unable to reintegrate into society or their marriages.Ronnie Kendig’s characters are heroes who fight to live and fight to help others live. Sometimes the costs are seen on the outside though they are very real as one character named Sydney learned both at home and while traveling abroad. There is hope infused in the story many times and there is mention of a ministry to help soldiers, through a passing character.The novel caused my heart to race and I couldn’t put the book down! I stayed up late one night to finish the book because I was so involved in the story, and I wanted to see how it was going to end. If you’re looking for a book that really grabs you the moment you open the cover, look no further. There are three other novels in the series that I hope to read and share with you very soon. Ronie Kendig is incredible! She is consistently amazing! And she created Tox! Best. Hero. Ever. (The TOX Files Series)A couple of warnings for Nightshade. Do not start reading it 25 minutes before you have to start getting ready for church. You will talk yourself into the belief that you really don’t need all that time to get ready when you really do. Don’t read before bed unless you don’t mind hardly any sleep or struggling to put your contacts in the next morning. Finally, don’t start when waiting in the car for your daughter who will be out in 2 minutes. You might ask her to read to you on the drive to school!I loved Nightshade! The action starts at the beginning and just keeps going. I really liked the whole concept of a team of discarded heroes working covertly together. I loved ‘meeting’ the other team members and can’t wait to read the other stories in the series.I also really liked both Max and Sydney, even though there was a time or two or three (I’m talking to you Sydney!) I wanted to pull them aside and have a quick chat with them. The growth in max throughout the book was great to read and believable. I also loved the ending especially the last line! I can’t wait to start book two! Just awesome!

How have I not read this series before??? When the series originally came out, I had not read this author's work yet. Since then, I have read everything I can get my hands on! Now, with the new rewrites and updates to the series, I decided it was a perfect time to catch up!I'm so glad I did! I could hardly set this book down because I was so invested with these two characters. Nightshade was action packed and did a great job of introducing the characters that I know will be part of the series.And I really liked both Max and Sydney, even though I felt that each of them made some decisions that would hurt the other at times. But, it all worked so well together to blend into the perfect situations that were filled with tension. I loved it!

It's fast-paced, full of suspense, a page burner: all of this and more! Interwoven with a story of love that's been crushed yet hasn't died. It's a story of heroes and misguided betrayal attempts. I couldn't put it down, yet did, so that I could absorb what was going on without moving past meaty stuff. I am impatiently waiting for the next one. Thanks, Ms. Kendig, for sharing your gift of story telling and your skill at your craft.

Didn't read theses books when they were releases before,but glad I decided to try the prerelease. Loved the raw emotions and dealing with the real affects of combat. I also was rooting for the characters and gripped by the constant twists and action. Could hardly put it down.

Intense storyline - great plot - makes you root for the characters to choose well and persevere in spite of odds. Love her books!

I must say that at first I thought the first version was the best, but after finishing the second one, they are both really great. I do have the first copies of the series and can't wait to read the new versions of the upcoming books. Ronie Kendig is my favorite author and have to confess to rereading anything she writes several times over.

I also read the first edition of Nightshade around 2012, loved it then, loved it this time around.
