Amazon.com Review

There is no one in contemporary literature quite like Barbara Kingsolver. Her dialogue sparkles with sassy wit and earthy poetry; her descriptions are rooted in daily life but are also on familiar terms with the eternal. With Prodigal Summer, she returns from the Congo to a "wrinkle on the map that lies between farms and wildness." And there, in an isolated pocket of southern Appalachia, she recounts not one but three intricate stories. Exuberant, lush, riotous--the summer of the novel is "the season of extravagant procreation" in which bullfrogs carelessly lay their jellied masses of eggs in the grass, "apparently confident that their tadpoles would be able to swim through the lawn like little sperms," and in which a woman may learn to "tell time with her skin." It is also the summer in which a family of coyotes moves into the mountains above Zebulon Valley: The ghost of a creature long extinct was coming in on silent footprints, returning to the place it had once held in the complex anatomy of this forest like a beating heart returned to its body. This is what she believed she would see, if she watched, at this magical juncture: a restoration. The "she" is Deanna Wolfe, a wildlife biologist observing the coyotes from her isolated aerie--isolated, that is, until the arrival of a young hunter who makes her even more aware of the truth that humans are only an infinitesimal portion in the ecological balance. This truth forms the axis around which the other two narratives revolve: the story of a city girl, entomologist, and new widow and her efforts to find a place for herself; and the story of Garnett Walker and Nannie Rawley, who seem bent on thrashing out the countless intimate lessons of biology as only an irascible traditional farmer and a devotee of organic agriculture can. As Nannie lectures Garnett, "Everything alive is connected to every other by fine, invisible threads. Things you don't see can help you plenty, and things you try to control will often rear back and bite you, and that's the moral of the story." Structurally, that gossamer web is the story: images, phrases, and events link the narratives, and these echoes are rarely obvious, always serendipitous. Kingsolver is one of those authors for whom the terrifying elegance of nature is both aesthetic wonder and source of a fierce and abiding moral vision. She may have inherited Thoreau's mantle, but she piles up riches of her own making, blending her extravagant narrative gift with benevolent concise humor. She treads the line between the sentimental and the glorious like nobody else in American literature. --Kelly Flynn

From Publishers Weekly

HA beguiling departure for Kingsolver, who generally tackles social themes with trenchantly serious messages, this sentimental but honest novel exhibits a talent for fiction lighter in mood and tone than The Poisonwood Bible and her previous works. There is also a new emphasis on the natural world, described in sensuous language and precise detail. But Kingsolver continues to take on timely issues, here focusing on the ecological damage caused by herbicides, ethical questions about raising tobacco, and the endangered condition of subsistence farming. A corner of southern Appalachia serves as the setting for the stories of three intertwined lives, and alternating chapters with recurring names signal which of the three protagonists is taking center stage. Each character suffers because his or her way of looking at the world seems incompatible with that of loved ones. In the chapters called "Predator," forest ranger Deanna Wolfe is a 40-plus wildlife biologist and staunch defender of coyotes, which have recently extended their range into Appalachia. Wyoming rancher Eddie Bondo also invades her territory, on a bounty hunt to kill the same nest of coyotes that Deanna is protecting. Their passionate but seemingly ill-fated affair takes place in summertime and mirrors "the eroticism of fecund woods" and "the season of extravagant procreation." Meanwhile, in the chapters called "Moth Love," newly married entomologist Lusa Maluf Landowski is left a widow on her husband's farm with five envious sisters-in-law, crushing debtsDand a desperate and brilliant idea. Crusty old farmer Garnett Walker ("Old Chestnuts") learns to respect his archenemy, who crusades for organic farming and opposes Garnett's use of pesticides. If Kingsolver is sometimes too blatant in creating diametrically opposed characters and paradoxical inconsistencies, readers will be seduced by her effortless prose, her subtle use of Appalachian patois. They'll also respond to the sympathy with which she reflects the difficult lives of people struggling on the hard edge of poverty while tied intimately to the natural world and engaged an elemental search for dignity and human connection. In Prodigal Summer, Barbara Kingsolver masterfully delivers three narratives which begin in late spring, wind through the burgeoning summer of an Appalachian mountain and valley, and come together as autumn raises its cooler head. Deanna is a 38-year-old, divorced, childless forest warden who has come to love being alone in her woods near the top of the mountain that overlooks Zebulon Valley; she is determined to stay that way until a stranger comes along with the buds of May. Lusa, a "foreigner" of Polish descent from Lexington (Kentucky or Virginia), left her university post to marry Cole Widener, a farmer in the Valley whose land no longer supports them. When Lusa the bride becomes Lusa the young widow, she has to figure out whether she wants to stay among these people and how to make a living farming in a valley where the last successful crop was tobacco. Septuagenerians Nannie Rawley and Garnett Walker are next-door neighbors who hold exactly opposite views of life; every day brings another battle at the fence that separates their land. These stories keep time with the riotous summer; they teach that life will be created and will continue in spite of the odds. At times, Kingsolver gets a little didactic--as these people of the Valley would say, "preachy-teachy"--having her characters deliver lectures or engage in arguments about the environment, the ecosystem, and the food chain. There are also more subtle lessons, though: farmers who can't compete in the food market, stay in debt, and end up driving delivery trucks or working at the new auto plant far away. But life keeps going. It simply has to. At least these people have each other. About Kingsolver's prose: When I began to look back over the book to find a good example, I started reading the book all over again; it's that good. I would like to offer this one passage (it's not a spoiler): "When the rain and thunder died and the wind had gone quiet, coyotes began to howl from the ridge top. With voices that rose and broke and trembled with clean, astonished joy, they raised up their long blue harmony against the dark sky. Not a single voice in the darkness, but two: a mated pair in the new world, having the last laugh." You can read the rest of the good stuff for yourself.

“Prodigal Summer” showcases some of Barbara Kingsolver’s loveliest descriptive prose but is hampered by too many characters preaching their gospel of environmentalism. I love the social conscience exhibited in all of Kingsolver’s work but having not just one but three characters driving home her message of environmental responsibility stole some of the magic from her solid storytelling. The novel unfolds through alternating chapters about three characters living on the land in rural Appalachia. Deanna is a park ranger with a passion for nature living alone on a mountain until a hunter who might as well be called Fantasy Man shows up. Lusa is a young woman adjusting to widowhood and her in-laws while struggling to find an earth-friendly way to make her farm solvent. Garnett Walker is an “old fart” with little patience for the independence and organic methods of his neighbor even while he struggles to revive the American chestnut trees on his own property. Each chapter deftly advances these three stories and ends in cliffhangers that made me want to read on. Ultimately, the author reveals how all the characters are connected.Throughout, Kingsolver offers lush descriptions of the beauty and fecundity of nature in summertime while her characters deal with the human desires unleashed by the season. Her prose is superb. After a hard rain, the dripping leaves of the forest echo with a “sibilant percussion.” A blacksnake "oozed" down the wall of a log cabin “in an undulating flow like a line of molasses spilling over the edge of a pitcher.” The plotting and pace are excellent and I laughed out loud quite a few times at funny observations or situations. My only problem is that too many characters descend into long-winded lectures on the necessity for humans to adopt more earth-friendly environmental practices. A lighter touch would have conveyed that important message more effectively and made this a sleeker, superior 5 star book.

I give 5 stars because I have been referring the guidelines in this book when installing Kodi on my new Fire TV stick, and it makes the process seems easy for me. This book mostly helped me to understand what is what on the Kodi and Fire stick, and what can I do more with the Fire stick. This is a book for adding value to one's Fire stick.

I thought this might help me get Kodi on my firestick. Easy read, learned a little, but even this so called 2018 edition is not even close to what I see with my firestick. I did muttle my way around and got the downloader loaded. But when I use the link in the book to download kodi, it will start downloading but always aborts before the download is complete.Very frustrating. I'll update if I ever get more and sort it all out.

Very little reason to order this unless you want to learn more about what Kodi is like a history lesson. Go on You Tube to get all this and more useful information. Not enough information on how to get add on apps to use Kodi once it is installed and exist on your device. If using a new Fire Stick you cannot even type the URL into place to download Kodi onto your Fire Stick. Need a keyboard input, voice will not work to do that.

This is the book that should come along with your Kodi on purchase. As it is, purchase it simultaneously. besides step by step instructions for several operating scenarios, Williams suggest a "work flow" method to use the resources to reduced unnecessary "back-and-forthing." Well worth the hour of your time. One note, several typos and misspellings detract from the experience.

It made setting up kodi a breeze,. I'm not a tecky person but I had know trouble settin up kodi on all 3 of our fire sticks.

Provided help with setup

Outdated (no fire cube coverage) and very remedial. Lacks what I would consider fundamental information. Don't waste your time. That's basically the only reason I wrote this!

If you are struggling with your kodi and finding a source to get the step by step guide to install Kodi perfectly working and enjoy your favorite show without any interrupts i think this book will be a great choice for everyone. The author has provided step by step tips and instructions with screenshots to follow them perfectly making everything easier than anything i have read before. This is my 3rd order of this book this time i have purchased this for my aunt who just received one recently.

Review

“A fine addition to the growing library of alternative approaches to literalism in belief, this book is suitable for academic libraries, liberal churches, and individual seekers.”—Library Journal“A truly extraordinary read from beginning to end...Informed, informative, thoughtful, thought provoking, inspired and inspiring. Very highly recommended.”—Margaret Lane, Midwest Book Review“Like everything else in life, Gods die. And when they do, new Gods come to take their place. Ours is a time of new Gods birthing, and Nancy Abrams’s magnificent book A God That Could Be Real is a powerful act of midwifery. This is not a eulogy for the old Gods but a prophecy of the new.” —Rabbi Rami Shapiro, author of Perennial Wisdom for the Spiritually Independent   “You will find that your beliefs are enriched by reading Abrams’s book. I am thrilled that we have the creativity and originality that is exhibited in this book, and I recommend it highly to all, religious or secular, believer or atheist, who are ready to explore honestly their understanding of the divine in our beautiful, expanding universe.” —Archbishop Desmond Tutu, from the Foreword   “Over the past two decades a largely sterile dispute has raged between two diametrically opposing camps: atheists and religious fundamentalists. It is surely time to move on and elevate the discussion to a higher intellectual level. This ambitious and thought-provoking book by Nancy Abrams on the interface of science and religion is a timely and welcome contribution to a more productive discussion of the topic.” —Paul Davies, from the Foreword “A God That Could Be Real is full of sparkling prose, memorable quotes, and strikingly original insights that have never been brought to the page before, despite the long-running culture wars between organized religion and modern science over God and cosmic knowledge. My family and I spent a long dinner and all of breakfast the next day debating the meaning of this book. Give this book to the other questing minds in your family and brace yourself for heated discussions.” —Sandra Moore Faber, National Medal of Science recipient and University Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of California, Santa Cruz   “Nancy Abrams dares to pose many of the important and challenging questions that arise at the intersection of contemporary cosmology, spirituality, and atheism.  I respect Abrams’s moral passion and honest search for a God that could be real, a search beckoning us all.” —Matthew Fox, founder of Creation Spirituality and author of Meister Eckhart: A Mystic-Warrior for Our Times“[Abrams] points to a way beyond the boring religion-science debates, which pit secular fundamentalists against religious fundamentalists.”—Rev. Dr. Carl Gregg, Patheos

This book describes a concept of God that is consistent with science. Most interesting to me is that it matches completely my own personal intuitive "sense" of what God is. Some of the negative reviews seemed to be making fun of the author for not being scientific enough or having developed this concept through her personal experience, but they did not state any way in which the concept failed scientific argument so the author's concept remains valid. She'd be the first to change her theory based on new scientific findings so that the concept is always consistent with our current understanding of the way the universe works. Most religious concepts are at complete odds with known facts (if taken literally of course - as allegory they are fine. :)People who DO believe in their religion literally would probably not like this book but if you have a rich religious tradition but could use a more modern interpretation of God, try this out!

An entirely new point of view on an emerging God on earth, created by all the aspirations of every human who has ever lived. Totally congruent with science and the latest discoveries -- there is now NO need for any conflict between science and religion any more. A totally congruent spiritual system. I'm fascinated and have been thinking about these implications ever since I read the book. A page-turner and mind-bender, for sure!

We know we are alive and real, but from whence we came and why is the question of existence. Seeking answers to from where and why is, I believe, the basis for the author's finding embedded in each of us a God-capacity. It's undeniable that we want to believe in something greater than us, because we know there is more than us. Abrams tries to free us from being stuck in the traditional notions of God and conceive of God as an emerging, evolving something in which we can believe and be inspired. Many provocative thoughts and even inspirational sentiments, but not the answer for my God-capacity.

This book was a disappointment, mainly because it was not convincing even while trying to be open minded about what was being proposed. The prospect of cutting edge science and a view of the divine that go hand in hand is an exciting proposition, but felt this book had too little of the former and was not convincing on how it was positing the latter.I came away from it feeling like there could be (and might already be) a more convincing treatment of the subject.

I like A God That Could be Real, Beacon Press, by Nancy Ellen Abrams. particularly because it is an example of what could be; Theist or non-Theists abandoning argumentation in favor of seeking solutions. As Nancy, an atheist, says, a religion and science at cross purposes creates a fragmented culture. One either affirms reality on one side or the other, or tries to ignore that there is a problem, and live two contradictory lives at the same time. It messes us up. She is trying for an idea of God that integrates religion and science. In brief, she sees God as an emergent property of human consciousness. Not the same as saying we made up God, but saying that much as an ant colony behaves as one center of decision making instead of many so we create God. Indeed that is our destiny, our future. Apparently scientists take emergent properties very seriously. In her scientific mind, (she is a philosopher of science and her husband is a noted cosmologist) an emergent property is quite real.(This has similarities with Chardin’s God as Final Cause, the God at the end of the road. I would like this thinking even better if she treated the potential of consciousness with the same respect she gives the emergence of consciousness. That might give us a God both before and after us. First potential, and then emergent. Or to put it into Aristotelian language God as both Final, Efficient and Formal Cause. Maybe Material too although there is reason to think even the scriptures find the Material Cause elsewhere than God. I seem to remember that Aristotle found it in prime matter.)Ms. Abrams sets as a rule for her thinking that we cannot have the God we want with the characteristics we want because such a God is impossible. For instance, a good God cannot be omnipotent. The reality of life on earth makes obvious that if God is good, then he is is unable to prevent evil, for we clearly have evil, or if God is omnipotent, then God is not good, at least from our perspective. So don’t ask her to create a good omnipotent God. Or a God of the universe for that matter, just a local God of our planet. The God that could be real is much more limited than the God of Aristotle and Aquinas. She links the criticality of saving our planet not to our self interest but to our destiny as those who will carry consciousness and God to the universe, or at least more of the universe. This she sees as our sacred task. These are just a few of my stumbling ideas from the book. Although I found many of the thoughts in A God That Could Be Real consonant with my own thinking, I recommend it to you not so much for what it says as for what she is trying to do. She is backing out of the fight between theist and non-theist and trying to start again utilizing both the wisdom of science and that of religion to produce a coherent picture. (Some other brilliant person somewhere in my foggy life recommended that we should state alongside our beliefs the security with which we hold them. As I have said in response to the invitation to share my doubts with others, I have no doubts. After four years of post-graduate work In the field of theology, I have no convictions so how can I have doubts?)She may have been forced into this. She is a food addict who was counseled by many to join a twelve-step group. The twelve step dictum that she should turn her self over to a higher power was of course impossible for an atheist, but when in desperation she finally tried it, she found it made a remarkable difference. Her scientific background told her that the God of her religious upbringing was nonsense. When at age fifteen she was asked by the rabbi to say that God created people, she responded that she thought people created God. So with that early commitment to the rational, how did she make sense of her experience? This book is the answer. Since she still thinks humans created God, just not as a figment of the imagination, I am not sure the rabbi would be pleased. But I am. It’s a start. This would seem to me to be the eon in which to be creative about the God who might or might not exist and thoughtful about what that God might look like or not look like. To simply say the God of our fathers and mothers is adequate seems incongruous with scientific findings and highly unlikely, and to say there is no God seems to leave some huge questions unanswered. Time to go back to work. As has Ms. Abrams.God bless her heart!

Every other book in this genre has the main character wipe the floor with his or her opponent. Not this tale. The fighting is great when it comes to detail. Bunch of abilities that both protagonist and antagonist use. Many near death scenes that make you believe that what does not kill you makes you stronger. With a crazy ending that made me wish for more I recommend this series so far.

This is a really great end to the ten year promise arc, I am looking forward to the next this is a wonderfully translated book, it's not hard to understand and explains a lot at the back of the book of you don't understand something place a bookmark and check the back for an explanation. I give. This book a 10/10

thank you gravity tales for this! there was a whole bunch of action shoved into this book. a bit to much for my taste so thats why its a 4 star. i enjoyed that the MC did get hurt and that some everyday events were given so the fights didnt overwhelm everything. i will be getting book 3 when it comes out.

Now this is the kind of that keeps me reading DOG's plenty of action, excitement, and combats. This author writes great story that can't be put down!!

I loved this book and recommend anyone that loves fantasy to give the series a chance, they will not be disappointed.

This is really a great story. I couldn't set it down and enjoyed this one as well as the first of the series. Totally sucked in by the characters and world-building and recommend it.

Ok. This was an ok book of this genre, how ever it feels laboured and doesn't flow as well as some others. This may come from the translation but on the whole not the best .

An epic continuation to an epic story. Packed with action and everything you could wish for from this genre of book. I can not recommend it enough to other readers, please try it!

Payback: Debt and the Shadow Side of Wealth, by Margaret Atwood

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Atwood's book is a weird but wonderful mélange of personal reminiscences, literary walkabout, moral preachment, timely political argument, economic history and theological query, all bound together with wry wit and careful though casual-seeming research. Every debt comes with a date on which payment is due, Atwood observes on this conversational stroll, from the homely and familiar notion of fairness and notion of equivalent values in Kingsley's Water Babies to the thornier connection between debt and sin, memory and redemption in Aeschylus's Eumenides. Any debt involves a story line, Atwood points out as she leads the reader into the nineteenth century [when] debt as plot really rages through the fictional pages, and ruin is financial for men, but sexual for women. Things get even darker on the shadow side where the nastier forms of debt and credit—debtors' prisons, loan sharks and rebellions—abide. Atwood is encyclopedic in her range, following threads wherever they lead—credit cards and computer programs, Sin Eaters, Saint Nicholas, Star Trek, the history of pawnshops and of taxation, Elmore Leonard's Get Shorty and Dante's Divine Comedy, Christ and Faust—and a consistently captivating storyteller. Atwood's book is a weird but wonderful mélange of personal reminiscences, literary walkabout, moral preachment, timely political argument, economic history and theological query, all bound together with wry wit and careful though casual-seeming research....Atwood is encyclopedic in her range, following threads wherever they lead--credit cards and computer programs, Sin Eaters, Saint Nicholas, Star Trek, the history of pawnshops and of taxation, Elmore Leonard's Get Shorty and Dante's Divine Comedy, Christ and Faust--and a consistently captivating storyteller. --Publishers Weekly, starred review, September 29, 2008In her witty, acutely argued and almost freakishly prescient new book, Payback: Debt and the Shadow Side of Wealth Margaret Atwood reminds us that debt is not just a political and economic issue. It's not just a matter for CEOs, heads of state, hedge fund managers or people with mortgages--sub-prime or otherwise. Debt is a cultural issue....Payback plugs a huge hole in our society-wide contemplation of the current financial crisis. In so many discussions of the ongoing mess in global markets, there is little mention of the venerable cultural ideas that underlie borrowing and lending.... All of this is presented, of course, not as something dry and scholarly, but as an arch--even, at times, ornery--argument that is vintage Atwood. --Chicago Tribune

This book is not interested in a purely financial explanation of debt. If that's what you're looking for, I suggest going elsewhere. If you're interested in a cultural reading of debt, this may be helpful. This book would be great for anyone new to the subject of debt (and who is also interested in literature), since it's a really easy read and she relates the theoretical workings of debt to real-world events and stories. However, for anyone who has any background knowledge on the subject, this book won't add anything new.

On the first page of Payback: Debt and the Shadow Side of Wealth, Margaret Atwood reveals that her motive for writing this book is based purely on her own curiosity of debt. She uses many outstanding anecdotes, memories and references ranging from Chinese culture to Scrooge McDuck to open the readers mind to think about debt and balance in so many different ways. The Canadian novelist examines the relation to debt and memory and between debt and written agreements. According to Atwood, "Without memory there is no debt: a debt is something owing for a transaction that's taken place in the past, and if neither debtor nor creditor remembers it, the debt is effectively extinguished" (p75).She imprints in the readers mind the shadowy subjects of revenge, debtors' prisons, and debts of honour which cannot be repaid by money, at this point things are looking bleak for the debtor. Atwood observes that, "In the shadowland of borrowing and lending, just as there is no limits set to the nature of and size of the debt, so there are no limits set to the nature and grisliness of nonpayment" (p134). Making the reader's imagination run wild wondering just how grisly things could get. After reading Payback I wondered if she could have some psychic abilities. It appeared that she brilliantly predicted the economic meltdown that the entire world was starting to experience when the book was released in 2008. Do not assume that this narrative is about debt management, the national debt or mafia revenges, if you are then you should think again. There were many times throughout the book she may converge on these subjects but do not mistake it as a boring book about finances. She delightfully intrigues the reader by taking them on a simplistic journey using her own thought process. She offers debt from different angles such as; having an entertainment value. The reader is exposed to the concept of the different roles that debt and credit offer in operas, stories and films. After all, without debt or credit I think the entertainment world would be a dull and boring place. There were many times the examples she used made perfect sense to me even though I had never thought of them that way until reading this book. Her creative approach takes readers on an in depth journey of one's own debt and even brings up the question if our mere existence could be considered a debt. Not something that we would naturally ask ourselves but it is a good question.Even though, Atwood is best known for her novels and poems she has done an amazing job in presenting this non-fiction, eye-opening approach to the different types of debts, the balancing of those debts and finally paying them back. She shares her curiosity of debt and credit as well as owing and repayment with a clever, smart, honest, witty and at times sarcastic approach. She truly makes a person re-evaluate their personal values. It is impossible not to discover that the fundamental parts of human nature are to find credit, incur debt, and then have to repay debt, in one way or other. These are scary times as we observe global warming, environmental issues, and financial turmoil this all results in potential for a huge credit imbalance. Unfortunately a small percentage of people hold the majority of the wealth. Unfairness is reaching a boiling point on a national and economic level. I fear that if society continues down this path of self-destruction that we are heading towards an enormous payback. Payback has its very unnerving moments but it is extremely entertaining at the same time.

Payback written by Margaret Atwood is a book that takes the common concept of `debt' and analyzes various aspects of it that were not commonly known before. Atwood's insight breaks down and explains debt in a way that is comprehensible by any general reader. Though the topic itself may seem a bit boring and tedious to read about, she utilizes a creative approach to display the multiple aspects of debt that many people in today's society are not already aware of. Her five main points that she goes into depth about are: ancient balances, debt and sin, debt as a plot, the shadow side, and lastly payback through all of which she uses extended comparisons, allusions, and attention grabbing facts that cover the wide range of perspectives within the topic of debt. She makes it so this common topic is relatable to everyone- no matter their age, race, or gender. Right off the bat, Atwood begins explaining facts that to me, and likely to others, were unknown and intrigued me to read more. For instance, she brings the notion up of how animals and humans seek fairness and equality amongst one another. In order for us to interact properly we seek that we are always reciprocated for our actions in an equal value or manner of another person. Here, she begins uses one of her many examples that reiterate her point in which a study of animals proves that this primitive theory is actually true. Another highlight of her first initial introduction is that debt isn't always how we perceive it to be. It can be something as simple as returning a favor unto someone, repaying your parents for what they have done for you, or even marriage. That being said, debt as we know it today takes numerous forms that we most likely weren't aware of beforehand. Moreover, she begins to incorporate various allusions to which some are very common to most readers and others may require research in order to understand. Some common examples being Santa Claus and Ebenezer Scrooge and how the perceptions of these characters today are completely inaccurate from how they originated and what they signify. Simple allusions like these makes the reader get a new perspective into how debt and the topic of sin have been connected and going side by side for an immeasurable amount of time. Before, debt was considered to be one of the worst sins one could commit to; however, nowadays it is something that everyone must go through. Her explanation of how history connects debt to the Christian religion is fascinating because once again it shatters all preconceived notions of the mere thought of debt. Furthermore, Atwood begins to analyze the numerous different types of debt and how the relationship between creditor and debtor begins to work. Whether this be through a mortgage, pawn shops, or something else. But, more importantly she explains that debt is something that has always existed, "without memory, there is no debt...without story, there is not debt" (page 81) and will continue to exist because of the mere fact that we have memory. There is always something to needs to be paid back, or returned to the creditor who had given you the opportunity. Also, she begins expanding upon the fact that wealth brings us to only be consumed by ourselves and not have a care for what is going on around us. She explains this through the allusion of using Ebenezer Scrooge once more; however, she redoes the story of how he realizes that its wrong to keep everything for himself. It was an innovative way to display the same type of moral message through her idea of modern day society. In conclusion, I would recommend this book to anyone--the reason being that she did not intend her audience to be within a specific range of people, anyone can understand what she has written about. She analyzed, explained, and related every possible aspect of debt to show its connections to history, people, and you along with summing it all up and displaying what it all means. I enjoyed her way of including numerous allusions to reiterate her main points which made it easier to understand as well. Atwood, in my opinion did a splendid job on this work because she opened my mind and eyes to the topic of debt and wealth that I had no prior knowledge of beforehand.

I've long been a fan of Ms. Atwood's fiction, only recently discovering her nonfiction work. In this book, she gives an historical overview of our concepts of debt and money. The conclusion I took away - no lasting change for good is possible in human civilization until we give up money as coin of the realm. As long as we equate debt with sin and failure, and financial abundance with righteousness and success, a consumer model is the only thing that is possible. I've been trying to take what I've learned from the book and apply it to dealing with the people in my life - family, friends, coworkers, strangers. Where am I using the standards of money=success, where am I pushing myself to look for new ways of valuing people and all of creation?
