To her Chinese friends, she is not a “real” Chinese. To her American and European friends, she is not a “real” American. She takes a journey through Asia, hoping to solidify her personal identification, but finds that it only further complicates it. In Taipei, Taiwan, she shuns her mother from buying the trendy white cotton masks in order to fit in with the Taiwanese. For, to do so would compromise her true self and quite literally, mask their identity. Rekdal covers her mouth around the Chinese women, too embarrassed to admit her lack of knowledge in speaking Chinese. Even with those who look the most like her, she comes to the realization that “we do not live here. We are only visitors.”In her poetic and charmingly sarcastic way, she grapples with what it means to belong, with what it means to “fit in.” She must find her place even though every “place” rejects her. Her words, each chapter could be a lyrical poem, capture the reader’s attention and emotion. Rekdal brings them on a journey of identity crisis and, as beautifully and swaying as her form and diction, shows them the sometimes turbulent, but remarkable process in finding one’s self. Her hurt, pain, joy, happiness, confusion, frustration, love, and finally recognition and acceptance bleed through the pages and into the readers’ heart. Rekdal’s The Night My Mother Met Bruce Lee, in today’s political and social climate of deciding who and who doesn’t belong, is a very pertinent masterpiece.

Well, you have BOTH Ha Jin AND Arthur Golden praising it on the back cover--what can you expect? (I like one and not the other). While the cover made me think that this was going to be a "wacky," irreverent account by a young, half-Chinese woman, the book is instead an extremely well-written, thought-provoking colletion of essays. Rekdal is a poet, and it shows in her evocative descriptions, in her lyrical passages, in an effortlessly beautiful line. Rekdal pulls it off without being narcisstic or excessively introspective; the book succeeds brilliantly. Though the essay's topics are somewhat disjointed--they go from America to Korea to China to childhood, etc--the disconnected structure seems to be part of the point: as the subtitle suggests, these are "observations on not fitting in." I liked her juxtaposition of the uncanny, the frustrating, the disappointing things along with the beautiful, the personal, the "mini-epiphanic" aspects.And yes, she is also very witty. The humor is very sharp. I found myself laughing hysterically at an Elvis reference and I normally don't find him amusing. Finally, as someone who also spent a year in a small city in Korea, I was delighted that she related experiences that I shared myself when I taught high school students in South Korea.

There are always stereotypes to be stripped down, aren't there?Rekdal's themes (race, how Americans are perceived overseas, how Americans perceive each other) make you think, but her writing won't make you struggle. Her essays, built around episodes of her life, are sad, funny, entertaining and insightful.An excellent book. Highly recommended. I wish I could teach a course called "Race in America" just so I could get more people to read this book.

This highly original book is refreshing for its insights into a topic that has been discussed inumerable times in the news media. Ms Rekdal reflects upon mother/daughter relationships, racial and sociological problems, all without preachiness.

Ms. Rekdal's numerous observations are personal and touching. Many Americans have struggled with an identity crisis. I understand fully the crushing power of long and brutal silences mentioned in the text. I am so glad that Ms. Rekdal is not silent at all.

I own the 4th edition, copyright 2011, and bought this updated one when I saw it on Amazon.This edition is 195 pages; the 4th edition is 238 pages. There is no description of the changes in the book (to save space no doubt) but it appears the smaller page count has two causes. On is that certain obscure CSS3 properties are no longer listed. For example, the 4th edition has an 'Aural Media' section that includes elements such as 'voice-family' and 'cue'. Those are gone from this edition, presumably because the W3C has deprecated those functions. The second reason is because there is less white space in general in this edition, and that's actually a good thing. I found the 4th edition harder to parse because the listing of property values was spaced out on different lines and a simple horizontal rule separated the property descriptions. In this edition the properties are more clearly delineated with a double bold border around each property, and the property descriptions are laid out in left-right columns that are easier to scan. The selectors and queries section received the same reformatting. The introductory Basic Concepts and Values chapters are still present with little change other than for being updated for 2018. Another nice thing about the 5th edition is that the header for every property contains two flags indicating whether the property is inheritable and can be animated.In general, CSS3 was relatively new in 2011 and that edition contained a lot of 'not yet supported' and ' tentative' comments in the descriptions. In 2018 CSS3 is a lot less rough around the edges, and this edition has been pruned and parsed as necessary to bring it more in line with the CSS3 state-of-the-art in 2018. That, along with it's much better formatting, makes it a worthwhile upgrade in my opinion.

This book is great for quick references. I've been coding CSS for years, but I still need a quick reference here and there. This pocket reference is perfect for those scenarios. It contains enough information to get a beginner up and running quickly with a little additional research. The basic concepts are in the beginning. The book is full of selectors and properties with explanations on their use (in alphabetic order). The explanations are very helpful and the examples are clear.I highly recommend this book. Its quick and useful to have on hand... and won't break the bank.

I am a hobby CSS programmer with a background in BASIC, HTML and UNIX shell scripting. I do not have the patience to read a programming manual so reference manuals work very well for me. The CSS Pocket Reference has what I wanted in a concise format. However, it also has some errors. Page 10, paragraph 3 misspelled "however" as "howerver". The reference information in Chapter 4, page 171 for "table-layout" gives 2 incorrect examples that say "table-display". So far as I can tell there is no such CSS property as "table-display". On page 74, I was pleasantly surprised to see the author properly identify the octothorpe instead of calling it a hash symbol or number symbol or pound symbol. There is a lot of information in this book that I still do not understand and likely will never use but it has helped me improve my CSS coding.

I am completely comfortable with CSS, but there are plenty of selectors and properties that I don't use all the time, so I forget the possible values for the properties, or I forget if the property has "text" or "font" in the name, or something like that. This pocket reference appears to be complete, and it's easy to use and keep at hand and get around in because it's physically so small and doesn't include a lot of discursive explanation. It does include enough explanation to know what each CSS property does. Since I got it, I pretty much never look in my many larger CSS books.

I bought 5 of the Dick and Jane books for my 2 grandsons (ages 2&3) for Christmas.I think the simpleness of the books are what draws the children. They can identify with the kids and what they do for fun. We are reading them to the children right now but, it won't be long until they are on their own. The books came before the estimated time of delivery and in perfect condition. I have ordered quite a few items from amazon.com in the last year or so. I always compare prices. For what I buy, amazon is usually pretty good as far as price. But you MUST compare first. Just because it's from amazon doesn't mean it is the cheapest, I have learned. The free shipping on certain products is great but some of the items I wish to order are not eligible.

These type books were the first to come to mind when I thought of teaching my 5 year old to read. It's full of sight words and he enjoys being a big boy and reading to mommy and daddy. Only give it 4 stars because the pictures are still dated and I wish the little boy was named Pete or something other than Dick.

Great for sight words for young children...you just have to keep reading this to them, ask them to tell about the picture, what do they think is going to happen....just encourage conversation... and point to the words when you read. Eventually the words will become familiar.

This was a great book... granddaughter was already reading some and had flash cards and harder books...this was a delightful book for her, she was so please with herself... the reward of being able to read most of it with very little help...and still every day...she wants to read one of several Dick and Jane books.... love them....

I got this book to show my grandchildren what books were like when I was a child. It was nostalgic for me & interesting for them!

I learned to read as a child with these books, and comparing it to reading material being given to my Kindergarten grandson from his school, I believe these old Dick and Jane books are STILL the best by far!

I actually had the Dick and Jane books as a child which had a big part in teaching me how to read. I purchased this book for my great granddaughter as she's starting to learn word recognition. This is the perfect book to get a Pre K started in learning how to read.

Beth Hansen started her more than twenty years museum career through a graduate program, but she has always worked at very small museums where she was the entire exhibit development/construction staff. Her mix of academic training and practical experience led her to teach workshops on creating exhibits for other small museums. Over the years she has worked with creative volunteers and ingenious museum directors who have come up with great ideas for do-it-ourselves projects. Beth is adjunct faculty in the Museum Studies program at the University of Oklahoma.She developed and teaches the Exhibit Development class for the Museum Studies graduate program at the University of Oklahoma. As a faculty member, she has access to the latest research in visitor studies. Sharing this information with volunteers at small museums is her goal for Great Exhibits!.

The most adorable book! I've purchased multiple times and gifted to all the children of the "hip hop heads" in my life, for them to read and enjoy as a family. Wish they had more genres in the series!

Delivered quickly and as described

Using clay style illustrations, this children's book follows the history of hip hop. The top artists are represented including Grandmaster Flash, Run-DMC, The Beastie Boys, Tupac, Eminem, and more recent artists like Drake and Nicki Minaj. To be honest I was surprised at how thorough the book was and couldn't come up with any artist off the top of my head that wasn't included. The book follows a rhyming format when talking about each artist which at times can be a little awkward sounding, but overall is pretty fun to read. Kudos to the author for managing to make the NWA portion of the book kid-friendly! This is a book that is fun for both adults and kids and I highly recommend to anyone who likes this genre of music.I received a free copy of this book from Akashic Books but was under no obligation to post a review. It starts with DJ Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash and proceeds through the years to Drake and Kendrick Lamar.One of the best sections also pays homage to the fact that “there’s much more to hip-hop than what you can hear!” Hip-hop really is a culture. It is a style of dancing, dressing, and art. While it started in certain neighborhoods, hip-hop has spread through the entire country. Hip-hop has been a place for artists to express everything from materialistic desires to political messages.This is a great book for kids that are into hip-hop. It lures them in with verse and gives credit to the greats in the business, past and present. Hip-hop doesn’t always get the respect that it deserves, but it is an art form in and of itself. The ability to write and rap the words they come up with is truly amazing and something a lot of us can’t do.

Art is by Anny Yi and the book is ‘produced’ by Nelson George.I acquired this ‘Advance Reading Copy’ from Akashic Books in exchange for an unbiased, honest review.The book jacket tells me it is a “playful, guided tour of one of the most revolutionary pop culture movements of the twentieth century: hip-hop.” The book is a follow-up to the title, WHAT IS PUNK?This is a hard-cover, children’s picture book with gorgeous clay figure illustrations. Anny Yi is “an artist who makes clay-art dioramas and non-stop motion films inspired by fashion and music.” She is extremely talented. The clay figures are very life-like; very realistic. How does she ‘dress’ them? and make them break-dance?The book is in verse: “In the beginning, there was a beat. Two records spinning, and the crowd got on its feet.” The ‘story line’ is very fast-paced, with Dr. Seuss-like rhyming and lots of information. It is a simplistic biography of such hip-hop artists as LL Cool J, Salt-N-Pepa and Jay Z.The book was gorgeously put together. The illustrations really fit with the verse.The verse was fast, snappy and easy to read. It had quite a beat of its own.I really liked the book because I learned something from it. Me, who knows absolutely nothing about hip-hop, can now rattle off names like RUN-DMC and Missy Elliott.“But hip-hop remains, deep down at its heart, a unique expression, an urban form of art.”
