The most adorable book! I've purchased multiple times and gifted to all the children of the "hip hop heads" in my life, for them to read and enjoy as a family. Wish they had more genres in the series!

Delivered quickly and as described

Using clay style illustrations, this children's book follows the history of hip hop. The top artists are represented including Grandmaster Flash, Run-DMC, The Beastie Boys, Tupac, Eminem, and more recent artists like Drake and Nicki Minaj. To be honest I was surprised at how thorough the book was and couldn't come up with any artist off the top of my head that wasn't included. The book follows a rhyming format when talking about each artist which at times can be a little awkward sounding, but overall is pretty fun to read. Kudos to the author for managing to make the NWA portion of the book kid-friendly! This is a book that is fun for both adults and kids and I highly recommend to anyone who likes this genre of music.I received a free copy of this book from Akashic Books but was under no obligation to post a review. It starts with DJ Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash and proceeds through the years to Drake and Kendrick Lamar.One of the best sections also pays homage to the fact that “there’s much more to hip-hop than what you can hear!” Hip-hop really is a culture. It is a style of dancing, dressing, and art. While it started in certain neighborhoods, hip-hop has spread through the entire country. Hip-hop has been a place for artists to express everything from materialistic desires to political messages.This is a great book for kids that are into hip-hop. It lures them in with verse and gives credit to the greats in the business, past and present. Hip-hop doesn’t always get the respect that it deserves, but it is an art form in and of itself. The ability to write and rap the words they come up with is truly amazing and something a lot of us can’t do.

Art is by Anny Yi and the book is ‘produced’ by Nelson George.I acquired this ‘Advance Reading Copy’ from Akashic Books in exchange for an unbiased, honest review.The book jacket tells me it is a “playful, guided tour of one of the most revolutionary pop culture movements of the twentieth century: hip-hop.” The book is a follow-up to the title, WHAT IS PUNK?This is a hard-cover, children’s picture book with gorgeous clay figure illustrations. Anny Yi is “an artist who makes clay-art dioramas and non-stop motion films inspired by fashion and music.” She is extremely talented. The clay figures are very life-like; very realistic. How does she ‘dress’ them? and make them break-dance?The book is in verse: “In the beginning, there was a beat. Two records spinning, and the crowd got on its feet.” The ‘story line’ is very fast-paced, with Dr. Seuss-like rhyming and lots of information. It is a simplistic biography of such hip-hop artists as LL Cool J, Salt-N-Pepa and Jay Z.The book was gorgeously put together. The illustrations really fit with the verse.The verse was fast, snappy and easy to read. It had quite a beat of its own.I really liked the book because I learned something from it. Me, who knows absolutely nothing about hip-hop, can now rattle off names like RUN-DMC and Missy Elliott.“But hip-hop remains, deep down at its heart, a unique expression, an urban form of art.”

Johnny Appleseed is a legend who captures the imagination. Few books, however, exist on this man who has become almost a myth. I know, because after reading this book I tried to find a more in depth "grownup" book that would tell me more about this man. I couldn't find one. In the pursuit I've read internet accounts and other children's books, but nothing I've yet found is as comprehensive or alluring as this account of John Chapman's life.Steven Kellogg does an amazing job incorporating facts and myth into a compelling story. His pictures are rich with detail and add to the mystique. The kid I nanny loves this book and all of the adventures that Johnny Appleseed went on.I love this book enough that I gave it to a friend for her baby shower. I wanted her to discover the wonder of this man as she read it over and over again with her son.

Great pictures! My 3 & 5 year old loved the pictures but honestly I think the story could be written better with a nicer flow. I don’t know how people on the reviews think this is so great. Still the picture are. We like looking at the book.

I love all Steven Kellogg books and this is no exception. I am slowly building a collection of fairy and folktales written by him to use with my children in our homeschool literature units.

I love these Tall Tales by Steven Kellogg. The stories are so much fun and the illustrations are wonderful and creative. The Johnny Appleseed story included fact and myths and the beautiful and interesting drawings. I have bought several of Steven Kellogg's books for my grandchildren and I am sure they are going to enjoy this one also.

Great book! Bought this as a throw back gift for my husband. He was super excited to see it! I think the illustrations are just awesome.

I learned as much as the kids when we read this book.

Steven Kellog books on folk heros are just amazing. His writing style brings the characters to life and the artwork is so amazing they tell the story on it's own.

Just like Dave (the author) said in his own biography, “I write to connect people to the heart of God". Congratulations and thank you, Dave! Well done! You surely helped me developed a deeper appreciation of God and a closer relationship with Him, and I am confident, many others would say the same as well. :) Many reasons I really enjoyed this book, such as (1) This book is full of scriptures, including chapters inspiring readers to cherish Gods word more (such as “Day 8, Jesus calls, “Meet me in my Word”). I want to point this out as many other devotional books I’ve read are more focused on sharing the author’s view and experience with certain topics or bible verses (which is fine), but personally, I like books with lots of references of bible verses better. You can tell the author is very passionate about God’s word. 2) I guess maybe because the author used to be a lawyer and a teacher, this book is very well structured and intentionally organized. It is clear and to the point, easy to read and follow (even for me, a Chinese that English is my 2nd language). (3) I love how Dave shared about his life and personal stories with us each day, it makes me feel like a friend was sitting in front of me and having a conversation with me when I read the book. How delightful! Not only I got to learn from Dave’s experience, my heart felt very encouraged and cared for with Dave’s sharing. (4) I love how each day the book concludes with pages of activations (yes, pages of), including questions to reflect on or exercise to do together with Jesus. This is probably my favorite part of the book (although I haven’t finished reading the entire book yet). The activations are very practical that I benefited so much from them. One suggestion I have for those who may not have a lot of quiet time each day to read the book - don’t feel discouraged if you can’t finish each day’s reading and activations within the same day. To me, this is a very rich book to chew on. There’s no need to rush, take your time with this walk with Jesus and enjoy!

It helps you to break free from religious ways into a deeper more intimate relationship with our our Heavenly Father, which to me that’s what Christianity is all about. Thank you Dave for obeying and being lead by Holy Spirit!

If you are looking for a deeper more understandable walk with God, this book is a must read. Be prepared to be stretched and tried beyond. This book explains things about what it means to follow Jesus and have a closer relationship with him even a child can understand it.I loved the way the author became transparent in telling stories about himself to help explain the subject he wad talking about.This book has changed my life. To understand a better way of living. Living the life that God has planned for you.

I completely enjoyed this devotional. I've used many over the years but never one more practical. I kept finding myself thinking, "I wish this was available when I first began my walk with Jesus almost 40 years ago!" It's much meatier than most, and yet very easy to relate to because Dave includes so many of his own life stories and struggles. I appreciate all the relevant scriptures and action points... so much more than a devotional. I highly recommend this, especially for new believers looking to establish a firm foundation. My one recommendation, don't rush through it, give yourself time to digest each "day" until the principles bring for the desired fruit. Dave Milford you're a wordsmith! Well done!

I just finished Hammer of Witches, and I must say, it was a pretty fun read. Mlawski managed to fit a magical fantasy epic into a historical account without substantially altering the core of the history, which I can't imagine was an easy task. More importantly, the characters were vivid and natural rather than the 2-dimensional bores some books try to spoon feed you. I also loved her interpretations of various myths and legends and how each character came away with a different "truth". The Baba Yaga scene alone is worth the price of admission :D

Shana Mlawski's "Hammer of Witches" is a nicely conceived and well executed fantasy set in an historical context. With the Spanish Inquisition and Columbus's first voyage to the New World serving as the backdrop, we join young Baltasar Infante on his quest for his father and his destiny. Ms. Mlawski does a superb job of maintaining the dramatic tension throughout the entire story. You really do want to know what happens next. I particularly liked the end note inserted by the author informing the reader of what we know, as well as what we don't know, about the historical persons appearing in the book. This is Young Adult fiction at its best - both entertaining and informative.

I really love this book. It has a unique and fresh perspective on the history, and while it is fantasy, I feel that it reflects the time period as accurately as it can. The magic system is interesting and makes a lot of sense with how the story plays out. And, it has fantastically realized characters and places. You can really visualize the journey of Columbus, the state of the "old world" and the beautiful new one.

Religious texts, history, myth - they all tell the story of the mess that is the human family. Shana Mlawski puts these all together in a fast moving mystical fantasy for young adults that is at once informative and thought provoking. For, if we should ever pioneer into the round world of enlightenment we must understand the raw flatland of intolerance, greed and ignorance from which we come.

Baltasar Infante is unaware he has the gift of storytelling: the ability to physically conjure up the characters and creatures from tales. Living in 1490s Spain with this talent is dangerous because a branch of the Inquisition, the Malleus Maleficarum, are hunting storytellers down. The Malleus kidnap and torture Baltasar for information about the sorcerer Amir al-Katib. Baltasar has never met al-Katib but the Malleus slip that Baltasar is al-Katib’s son. Escaping the Malleus, Baltasar goes on a quest to find his father and stop a disastrous prophecy from being fulfilled. His journey takes him on an exploratory mission with Cristόbal Colόn to find the West Indies. The voyage is filled with danger as Baltasar tests his storytelling skills and follows the deadly trail of his father.Hammer of Witches is an inventive story, mixing Christopher Columbus’s voyage to the New World with magic. But Mlawkshi’s creativity feels clumsily pasted together because she does not flesh out a strong foundation for the magic in her story. Readers might think they have a solid grasp of Mlawski’s world only to have it crumble with inconsistent or random details. This plot weakness unfortunately spreads into Mlawski’s character development. Baltasar’s actions and thinking do not always make sense. And Baltasar’s companion, half-genie Jinniyah, seems flat and irrelevant to the story. Fortunately, the stories continue throughout his adventures. They are the jewels that bring sparkle and life to this book. The plot line runs in a relatively straight line, but is peppered with all kinds of tales. The stories feature murder, revenge, demons, golems, a unicorn, and quite a few ferocious creatures that are the stuff of nightmares. Stories are powerful here regardless of their truthfulness. As Baltasar learns to his surprise– perception is often more important than fact.Characters were also a bright spot in this tale. Baltasar, our storyteller extraordinaire, meets many friends along his journey. A few of them are female characters who definitely add depth to the story. One in particular refuses to be locked into the roles other people choose for her and she schools Baltasar quite thoroughly.From the title and cover, I was expecting a fantasy and possibly some history, but had no idea how MUCH history. I appreciated learning about this time period and came to the realization that I have not read much about the Spanish Inquisition in the past.The title had me puzzled initially, but that is because I had never heard of the document before. The Malleus Malificarum, or Hammer of Witches, was written in the 1400s and led to the persecution of witches or people thought to be witches. Without that base of historical knowledge, I had to read and re-read some things, but most readers will likely be able to follow the events regardless. In addition, Shana provides a great author’s note at the conclusion which points out the relative historical accuracy of the book and where she took artistic license. She also offers many links to primary and secondary sources on her website. I find that I am always craving a bit of non-fiction with historical fiction, so this fit the bill perfectly.Recommendation: Get it soon particularly if historical fiction is one of your favorites. The Firefly: The Official Companion: Volume Two was a wonderful purchase for me. It is 208 pages of detailed information on heavy glossy color pages. It is 32 more pages than Volume One. The photos, sketches and diagrams in the book are wonderful. It is a full size paperback book about 8 1/2" x 11". It is the same size as Volume One. The companion book is a very nice quality. And, it is heavy.It contains the scripts of several episodes which include Jaynestown, Out of Gas, Ariel, War Stories, Trash, The Message, Heart of Gold, and Objects in Space.There are a lot of commentary by the cast and crew. There are profiles of the actors and characters which detail a lot of information. There are a lot of drawings and pictures of props and costumes. There are also a lot of scene info and photos. There is information on the creation of the theme song for the show.Joss Whedon did a great job with the show. And, so did his team. Fox screwed up, and they should have let Whedon do what he knew how to do and to allow the show to stay on a decent night than to mess with things and mess with the episode order.This is definitely a must book for the Firefly fan and any Browncoat for sure.I recommend this book because it is so fully detail with information and color photos, and you get a lot of behind the scenes knowledge about the show and what the actors, writers and directors thought.This companion book tells so much that you are not able to find and gather in one place and be able to have available in front of you in your hands.

As a serious Firefly addict, this book is fascinating! Not only lots of photos and explanations of the major props, it also gives the shooting scripts for the first half of the series. Since I don't always hear clearly, and some actors mumble, I love having the scripts--I can finally see exactly what the words are. Also--and I find this delicious--it gives the Chinese words and phrases spelled correctly, plus the exact meanings. I really enjoy that.Thanks!

A great book for fans of the series, along with Volume One. This book has everything you could want to know about 8 of the Firefly episodes - including some of the best like, Jaynestown, Out of Gas and Trash - including the full shooting scripts and background information, e.g. how they made the mud that was being farmed. There are also a lot of interviews, photos and other details. It's a great read for anyone who likes the series and/or is interested in how TV is made, particularly the very special kind that Joss Whedon made.

Features the screenplays for the 2nd half of Firefly's one-season run. Lots of stills from the show, interviews with actors and crew. If you love this show (in other words, if you've seen it), you must have this and the first volume.

Best Sci Fi series since Star Trek. Never should have been taken off the air, even if they did swear in Chinese. If you are reading this review, buy the whole series on DVD. It is a successful combination of the best Western with the best space travel. Also, the music is delightful acoustic fiddle.

This book is totally for the Firefly fan. Many have gone to comic book conventions wanting more from this franchise, and it is here. There is so much good inside information that it is hard to pick favorites. Having interviews with the actors helps to give us fans a few minutes more with a great sreies that should have lasted for years. This book with not disappoint and I highly recommend to all. Great inside stuff!!!!

Generally, I collect ceramics, I don't make them anymore. I was never very adept with the potting wheel where my projects too often became lost in space, but I used to make very nice ceramics. In the process of dabbling with molds, slip and glaze I wondered about other aspects of the craft and over the years I have read and studied the subject informally. This wonderful book is a valuable resource whether you are starting out and want to experiment with different clay projects or want to refresh your memory.Zakin first explains the building blocks--ceramics-making materials (different combinations lead to different outcomes). He discusses types of clays, feldspars, frits, silica, and other modifying compounds. Ever notice when you hold a cup made from Kaolin (frequently called porcelain) filled with a hot fluid you don't burn your hand whereas the cute cup you bought at the local craft show made from a more porous clay does? Zakin provides a great deal of information about the attributes of clay including plasticity, durability, color, maturity absorption, texture, resistance to warping, and intended use. If you're making a mug, a quiche pan, or a vase (or buying one), you may want to consider these aspects.Zakin provides the reader with much information about ceramic color, glazes, and mold-making (plenty of tips for success). I was fascinated with the sections discussing glaze making and testing, and kiln loading and firing including some nice photos of the raku process. Section 16 includes a succinct history of ceramics that covers various types generated over the ages (nicely illustrated and clearly written).The appendices of the book continue the in-depth exploration of the process of ceramics making including ways to analyze your results. This is an informative and well illustrated book containing many examples of ceramics made by the author and other artists working in his field.
