This book is recommended because it fits in your back pocket, and it comes with a removable map of Hong Kong Island with Macau. It has a small color subway guide as well. it has sturdy plastic lamination on the cover and jackets.It is perfect for 2-3 days in Hong Kong, and has general recommendations about popular places to visit and eat and stay. It is a fair product to get you around the basic places with good transport information. It is not meant as a comprehensive guide. That is the larger book by Rough Guide.

Rough Guides are never a disappointment, but they also aren't mind blowing in details or information you can't find on TripAdvisor or other sites. Before discovering Moncole Travel Guide Series, I would without hesitation give Rough Guide 5/5 stars.....but then I found Moncole's Hong Kong and it truly deserves the 5 star rating. I like Rough Guide as a supplement to any travel guide I take with us for several reasons. Compact size to throw into a day bag or purse, easy to navigate chapters as they are laid out by neighborhoods, "Best of," and in particular with Rough Guide Hong Kong the key phrases or signs in several languages. This guide also has a very beneficial map that is removable and ideal if you just need a map to navigate the streets of Hong Kong. Mass transit clearly marked, and several new features to this edition make it useful for a first time visitor (such as me) to Hong Kong.

We took this book and the Frommers Day by Day guide to Hong Kong and Macau and basically ended up throwing away the Frommers book. This one was so much better! Great neighborhood maps, suggestions of things to do, explanations of what you are seeing. You can use this to plan your whole trip and get you around the whole time. This, plus a detailed transit map from the hotel was all we needed.

I am a confirmed Kindle user and prefer e-books to printed books whenever they are available (especially for traveling). But guidebooks are one huge exception. Maps are hard to find in a flash and almost always unreadable. Much better to have well-thumbed pages to guide you than to fumble with an e-reader. This is entirely about the medium, not the message. The guidebook itself is fine.

Great little guide to Hong Kong. The size makes it easy to keep in your purse. It also had great information about a number of attractions - although a lot of hotels were missing.

I have been to Hong Kong 3 prior trips, though the last one was 10 yrs ago. I got this book to refresh my memory. That it did, but it also provided tips and places I had not see. Well worth the money.

I used this and the Top 10 guide on our recent trip. This book had the better detailed maps and descriptions although some of the restaurants were out of date.

This guide is definitely a pocket reference, not a definitive guide. It lists many interesting attractions and gives details about them as well. There are a few restaurant and hotel recommendations, but not a lot. This guide would be good as a quick reference, but if you are planning your trip in advance, you may want to look for a more comprehensive guide.

The Dragonfly Sea is the kind of book that will keep you enthralled, and make you wonder about the Kenyan landscape – but more than anything else it will leave you wanting more of Owuor’s writing.The book opens on the island of Pate, off the coast of Kenya, where stubborn Ayaana lives with her mother, Munira. Ayaana has never known what it’s like to be with a father, till Muhidin, a sailor enters their lives and things start to change. There is so much happening in the book that for some time I had to just pause and take a breath. That’s the power of this book. It also reminded me of Homegoing but not so much. So, it is its own person so to say and I love that about it.The Dragonfly Sea is a coming-of-age book that is unlike any other I have read. Maybe it is the setting, but mostly it is the way Owuor has written this book. This is the first time I am read something by her, and it won’t definitely be the last. Ayaana’s voice, her thoughts, and the way circumstances impact her thoughts are beautifully expressed throughout the book. Whether is a visitor with a murky past or from dragonflies to a tsunami or kidnappers, or even her journey to the Far East, every plot-line has a purpose to serve and even though the book stretches to five hundred and twelve pages, it is worth every sentence.Owuor’s prose strikes you immediately, it almost jumps at you and you also have to reread some sentences to make sense of what’s going on. It might even take some time for the reader to get into the book, but once you get the hang of the plot and the sub-plots, there’s no stopping you. I loved how descriptions change as per place, which of course they will, but I guess just the deftness with which it is done is remarkable. All details are laid out, and that helps a lot. The emotions of characters are unpredictable and that helps steer the novel in various directions, which is needed for a saga such as this one.The Dragonfly Sea is one of those books that has it all – adventure, compassion, the choices we make and how difficult they prove to be, and of course more than anything else the need for home – to what becomes home and where we feel at ease. It is the kind of book you want to come home to at the end of the day and not stop reading at all. A fantastic read that is not to be missed.

Absolutely loved this book. It is written in a very different and interesting style and held my interest throughout.

There are so many things in here that will blow your mind, make you think about your mind, and make you laugh soo hard. It was much like Bens other books, but much longer and even more full of hope and redefining..... life as we know it really! I encourage anyone who reads it to be prepared for some radical ideas, laughs, realizations, and... I suppose I could liken it to a flash of light, just a burst of refreshing optimism!!!! Always remember though that this hope is never found anywhere but in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and it requires a lot of surrender and trust. Also know that when the term religion is mentioned, it means the religion man has made with all our traditions and regulations. Gods religion is to take care of the fatherless and the widows, those without hope, bring them the hope of LIVING FOREVER WITH GOD!!!!!! The surrendering will be difficult, but it is THE best possible thing you could do for yourself and the world!WARNING: This book may cause the reader to want to start dancing and/or go do something out of the ordinary, go share this with someone else, transform the world, or I don't know, LOW KEY WORLD DOMINATION!!!! MWAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!All opinions are my own and now it's up to you to go taste and see what hope can look like. May this book lead you to the source of all things good, the Bible, the Word of God.

She examines the law and public policy that make abortion an easier choice for the most marginal women.The most impressive thing about Oberman's book is that she took the time to meet, speak with, and understand those on the other side of the divide over choice in America, and found much to admire and agree with. This book gave me hope that if more people read her book, we might begin to quit shouting at one another across the ideological divide, look at the data, and begin addressing the actual sources of the reproductive wars.

Oberman then moves to Oklahoma to ask a pointed and pertinent question: what will actually happen if abortion is outlawed? She cuts past the questions about morality and religion to explain what will happen, concretely, if and when the courts ban abortion. As you know, we are now closer to that possibility than we’ve been in a long time. I would absolutely recommend this book for use with smart, engaged undergraduates; Oberman’s writing is crisp and her message is fresh, timely, and petrifying.

A truly inspiring and rare memoir of deliverance from seemingly utter despair, hopelessness, and addiction to astonishing triumph and sobriety. It's notably interesting to discover how John uniquely survived and made a life around homelessness and addiction for such a long period of time. John is a gifted writer, a truly amazing man and yes, a "Miracle".Absolutely worth a read!

This book is truly a wonderful read and heart-warming story. John manages to make us laugh, cry and most of all hope. Even if you haven't experienced or been affected by substance-abuse, it is a story of redemption, which we can all relate to. You will fly through this book!

A very moving and inspirational story about alcoholism, homelessness, and despair. The lifestyle of these folks is like living on another planet to most Americans, yet we see them, or try not to see them every day. Written with clarity, truth, and great courage by a guy who has truly hit bottom, but didn't stay there.

Couldn't put the book down. John seems to be a regular, lovable guy that gets caught up in the cycle of addiction and falls hard but rises above it all. This book made me feel more compassion for the homeless than I thought possible. His story is truly an inspiration. Having a family member as an addict, this book gave me an unique insight into the mind of how an addict justifies their behavior, and has helped me to feel more loving and less angry. It is a must read if you have an addict in your life.

A unbelievable story of redemption. His recovery from years as a homeless alcoholic to a successful civil engineer is truly awe inspiring. Tip of the hat to the author.

Grade 9 Up–As an orphan raised by a monk, 15-year-old Emmet can read Latin and Greek, and is a very bright, if sheltered, teen. When Father Parfoothe dies, he wonders what will become of him. His question is answered by a surprise visit from an unknown cousin, a man named Francis Drake, who offers Emmet a place as a page on his ship. Emmet's life aboard the Pelican is extremely hard. He is small and ignorant of the ways of seafaring life, and has a difficult time adjusting to this strange, rough world. Captain Drake is a harsh taskmaster, and it isn't long before Emmet realizes that he is sailing with pirates and begins to think of a way to escape. Lawlor's novel is very different from most pirate stories, as Emmet sees nothing adventurous or glorious about this life. The tone is dark and grim, and there are scenes that might horrify younger readers. Sailor lingo and Spanish terms are sprinkled throughout with no help from a glossary. But the story is authentic and harrowing, and the historical details are well done. This book would be perfect for older teens who love historical fiction, or want more on pirates.–Anna M. At 15, Emmet Drake is essentially shanghaied by his elder cousin, Francis Drake, to serve as page aboard the Pelican, later renamed the Golden Hind. he expedition, billed as a trading trip, stretches into more than a year of wretched deprivation, piracy, and violent clashes with New World peoples as the unscrupulous, ambitious Francis pushes forward to achieve his goal of "girdling the globe." Lawlor's obviously exhaustive research comes through in the precise documentation of the stops along the way, in the colorful nautical slang, and in two comprehensive endnotes and an archival map of Drake's route. Unfortunately, the emotional conflicts given to Emmet (particularly his dismay over becoming "no better than the worst pirate") seem patched on. But the close-range view of a historical icon "as bold and daring as Satan himself" will appeal to readers who have studied the explorer, and the stark portrayal of his legendary journey encourages reflection on the human toll behind the achievements touted in history books. This book was not at all what I was expecting for a group read aloud for 8-12 year olds. The first few chapters were a totally different vibe than the rest of the book. I was not thrilled with there being an attempted rape scene and animal brutality (killed in anger/frustration-not for food or in self defense) to have to skim over or explain to the younger kids in the group. That being said, it was a fairly realistic portrayal of life at sea for pirates. Just not what I was looking for in a classroom setting.
