As a new student in interior design, I've found Mary Paul Yates's treatment of the material very helpful. She starts out with aesthetics, knowing that if she jumped right into yarns and fibers we might be turned off or intimidated. The coverage of color, light and lighting, texture, pattern and market appropriateness are all crucial considerations for the professional. A short chapter on sustainable design follows; an apt attention to the "green" concerns that are becoming more and more important to responsible occupants of planet Earth. We then learn about the fibers that make up the yarns that make up the fabrics, and their many characteristics which an educated designer must definitely know. Lest one would think she is fully informed, there are eight more important chapters, starting with fabric structure (wovens, knits, embroideries, bondeds, casements and laces, etc.)and ending with professional practices (fabric selection, costs and budgets, order-writing and "guidelines and pitfalls"). With abundant, colorful photographs, educational illustrations and an excellent glossary, this book is both informative and easy to read, and it's hard to imagine any client asking a question the thorough reader couldn't answer.

Great book to learn with.

I ordered this book for a class and though I have not read through it enirely I plan to keep it for many years into the future. It is an extremely useful book for either fashion or interior design students needing to learn all there is to know about all kinds of fabrics. It might even be useful to avid sewers who desire to learn more about the differences between fabrics and their uses.

A very nice book, quite in depth.Covers natural and man made fibers, types of weaves, production and fabric finishes. Many color plate examples to illustrate the information.This book was shipped quickly by Amason at half the price I paid at the campus bookstore! Needless to say, I returned the book purchased at the campus bookstore.

Well-organized and informative general reference on textiles for home or commercial use. Also has a great references section. Pictures are helpful, but I'd also recommend having a "hands-on" source in order to get a better understanding of all of the terminology and descriptions.

Excellent book!it covers most of the types, the data, and the uses for each one. i did know nothing about fabrics with this book it helped me alot.

People, even chidren who know the rhyme, are amazed to learn that it is based on a girl who brought her lamb to an American school and is not an old English poem with some veiled jab at Parliament or the story of a crime etc...

Very nice book. Suitable for every young child. A very simple but beautiful story. It is great to begin by singing this well known song "Mary had a little Lamb"

This is absolutely charming book about the true story behind the famous children's nursery rhyme, "Mary Had A Little Lamb." As the history goes, young Mary Elizabeth Sawyer was born in 1803 in Sterling, Massachusetts. Growing up on the farm, she helps nurse a little lamb who was rejected by his Mother for being frail and sickly, to good health. She lives far away from any neighbors, so she and the lamb become fast friends. So much so, that the little lamb even follows her to school! Mary tries to keep the lamb hidden under her desk with a blanket over him. However, when her teacher calls her up to the front of the classroom to recite her lessons, the little lamb comes up to the front, too! All the little schoolchildren laugh about it all and since Mr. John Roulstone happens to be visiting that day, it inspires him to write the poem that later became the famous children's nursery rhyme. The author, Will Moses, has lovely "Grandma Moses" style illustrations to accompany the story. And the nursery rhyme is included in the back of the book, with the music, as well. This is in sum, an absolutely charming piece of Americana. And an inspiring story for both the young and the old alike. I love it.

Grisham's first work of nonfiction is shocking, disturbing, and enthralling--a must read for fiction and nonfiction fans. We had the opportunity to talk with John Grisham about the case and the book, read his responses below. --Daphne Durham 20 Second Interview: A Few Words with John Grisham Q: After almost two decades of writing fiction, what compelled you to write non-fiction, particularly investigative journalism? A: I was never tempted to write non-fiction, primarily because it's too much work. However, obviously, I love a good legal thriller, and the story of Ron Williamson has all the elements of a great suspenseful story. Q: Why this case? A: Ron Williamson and I are about the same age and we both grew up in small towns in the south. We both dreamed of being major league baseball players. Ron had the talent, I did not. When he left a small town in 1971 to pursue his dreams of major league glory, many thought he would be the next Mickey Mantle, the next great one from the state of Oklahoma. The story of Ron ending up on Death Row and almost being executed for a murder he did not commit was simply too good to pass up. Q: How did you go about your research? A: I started with his family. Ron is survived by two sisters who took care of him for most of his life. They gave me complete access to the family records, photographs, Ron's mental health records, and so on. There was also a truckload of trial transcripts, depositions, appeals, etc., that took about 18 months to organize and review. Many of the characters in the story are still alive and I traveled to Oklahoma countless times to interview them. Q: Did your training as a lawyer help you? A: Very much so. It enabled me to understand the legal issues involved in Ron's trial and his appeals. It also allowed me, as it always does, to be able to speak the language with lawyers and judges. Q: Throughout your book you mention, The Dreams of Ada: A True Story of Murder, Obsession, and a Small Town. How did you come across that book, and how did it impact your writing The Innocent Man? A: Several of the people in Oklahoma I met mentioned The Dreams of Ada to me, and I read it early on in the process. It is an astounding book, a great example of true crime writing, and I relied upon it heavily during my research. Robert Mayer, the author, was completely cooperative, and kept meticulous notes from his research 20 years earlier. Many of the same characters are involved in his story and mine. Q: You take on some pretty controversial and heated topics in your book--the death penalty, prisonerÂ’s rights, DNA analysis, police conduct, and more--were any of your own beliefs challenged by this story and its outcome? A: None were challenged, but my eyes were open to the world of wrongful convictions. Even as a former criminal defense attorney, I had never spent much time worrying about wrongful convictions. But, unfortunately, they happen all the time in this country, and with increasing frequency. Q: So many of the key players in this case are either still in office or practicing attorneys. Many family members and friends still live in the same small town. How do you think The Innocent Man will impact this community and other small rural towns as they struggle with the realities of the justice system? A: Exonerations seem to be happening weekly. And with each one of them, the question is asked--how can an innocent man be convicted and kept in prison for 20 years? My book is the story of only one man, but it is a good example of how things can go terribly wrong with our judicial system. I have no idea how the book will be received in the small town of Ada, Oklahoma, or any other town. Q: What do you hope your readers will take away from The Innocent Man? The Innocent Man is the true story of Ron Williamson, who spent 18 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit. Ron was a severely troubled man, whose early dreams of playing professional baseball were trashed and he spent most of his adult life battling mental illness and addiction, as well as being behind bars for the majority of it. While I did not find this work of non-fiction nearly as riveting as Grisham's fiction novels, I think the author did a good job of not only highlighting the injustices in our so-called justice system, but also the failure in America to adequately treat mental illness and addiction, as well as calling into question the ethicality of employing capital punishment when so many wrongful convictions are given out. Generally when I read true crime, I'm there more for the details of the case than the personal story. I found it to be the opposite with this book. I don't think Grisham is quite "there" yet, with his handling of the more technical aspects of the case. At times I really had to plod through. But Ron's story hooked me from the beginning and I was compelled to finish it out for him. My only other complaint is that I personally feel the author revealed too much too soon. Going in, all I knew was that an innocent man was sentenced to death for a crime he didn't commit. I did not know if he ever got out or was actually killed on death row, I didn't know if the real killer(s) was ever found or convicted. It is my opinion that Grisham could have revealed these points in a different way and at a different time, to make the book more interesting. Stay away from the pictures if you don't want spoilers! But overall this is a decent book, and Ron's story is worth knowing, so read it for that alone.

In this book, John Grisham abandoned his usual novel-writing and focused on one unfortunate man in a small city in Oklahoma. Already stigmatized as the town "burnout," once he was accused of murder there seemed to be no getting out of it, though the evidence for the crime was sketchy at best. While this book lacks the homeric intensity of Grisham's best fictions, it has a lot to say about how law enforcement can be used -- and misused -- to indict and persecute those whose chief sin seems to have been an ability to serve as a convenient scapegoat. Those of us who have seen documentaries and news reports about Steven Avery and his nephew, Brendan Dassey, in central Wisconsin will see the same sorry process at work in small-town Oklahoma. Now what, if anything, can be done about it?

Reading this book has been a watershed moment for me. I knew the writings of John Grisham well, having read several of his earlier books. That this book was non-fiction I hadn't heard until I actually started reading it. All I knew when I bought it was that it concerned a criminal case that employees of my own former employer were involved in (the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, or OSBI). I felt a strong attraction to read any book that concerned the OSBI as I worked there nearly 19 years in the 1980s and 90s. I vaguely remember the criminal case in question, a the murder happened almost immediately after I began work there. Now that I have finished the book, my mind is at unrest. Every OSBI employee the book mentioned I knew, and some of them I saw on almost a daily basis. I always thought that from knowing them that way, I could guess their working style. If this book is to be believed, I didn't know them at all. The agents were all law enforcement agents through and through, but if their behavior in interrogating suspects is accurate, I am sadly disappointed in my friendships. Due to the two "main" suspects in the case who finally after many years of being locked up in prison for something it was eventually proven they didn't do (and one actually facing the death penalty) I am in the process of possibly reconsidering my views on the death penalty itself. I always approved before, what with working so long alongside law enforcement (I worked in a clerical capacity as administrative support and finally in the Human Resources Unit) but if false confessions are indeed taken as gospel and the confessor or suspect is found guilty in a death penalty case, we are knowingly leading an innocent person to die, while letting the actual perpetrator go free. During the numerous appeals that automatically come after a guilty verdict, most of the time those are sped through and none of the physical evidence is rechecked to ensure accuracy. This book is making me reconsider old friendships also, and I don't know how to ask anyone if the behavior is close to being accurate.

The way Grisham develops each character and the raw emotion he paints these scenes with is simply mesmerizing. I literally felt like I was in the story being escorted through each scene like my own personal tour of life on death row all the way to the final moments leading to the execution. Just an awesome book. I actually felt myself grieving for this man as I read the final few chapters, praying for a miracle just like his lawyer/grandson. This is a winner that does not disappoint....enjoy!

It does reveal what can (and all too often does) go horribly wrong when the police think they have the right person (despite no evidence supporting the idea) ... but it goes on forever when you know about all you need to know very early on.Disappointing as I am a Grisham fan (normally).

I received an Advance Reading Copy of The First Conspiracy by Brad Meltzer and John Mensch from the publisher (Flatiron Books) in exchange for an honest review. The First Conspiracy is scheduled for release on January 8, 2019.The First Conspiracy is not a novel, it is a glimpse into a piece of history. We are dropped into the months leading up to the Declaration of Independence and the war that it launches. The focus of this history is a group of men who are secretly associated with the British. This group of men has a plan. They are out to get George Washington.This story is told in third person, which makes sense for a history. The story jumps around in both place and time, following different people and their actions. Given that we are piecing together a conspiracy, the jumping made sense. What made less sense to me was the tense Meltzer chose to write in. This history is written in present tense. I think his goal was to make us feel a sense of urgency, make us feel tension and anxiety over how things were going to turn out. This did not work for me. Since this is a history, I knew from the beginning that the attempt to assassinate Washington was going to be unsuccessful. The choice of present tense just felt awkward.The down side to the jumping in time and space was that we never get a chance to really attach to any of the characters. While we see what individuals are doing, we don’t get close to any of them. This made it difficult for me to sink into the story. I felt very distant from the action and the people involved.I also struggled with the writing style Meltzer used. Meltzer is a bestselling author, who typically writes thrillers. I could see this in his approach to this history. His chapter lead ins and endings had the feel of what I see in thrillers. Again, this felt out of place to me. It felt as if he were trying to force a sense of excitement into the story, rather than mining and developing the intrigue that was inherent to this conspiracy tale.While this was an interesting story about a piece of history that I honestly did not know about, I did not love this book. I wanted to be immersed in this conspiracy, immersed in the plotting and intrigue. Instead, I was overly aware of the author and his stylistic devices.

In the US we are subject to sensational, yet dubious, newspaper headlines & web postings. Now we can add questionable “history books”The Secret Plot to Kill George Washington is based on nothing more than rumor & conjecture. The author provides only a handful of source facts and turns it into 410 pages of speculation and repetitive prose.In the books “Author’s Notes” Brad Meltzer writes about reaching out to historian Joseph Ellis who tells him that this topic will “…always be elusive” & Meltzer states “He was right”. Then the question begs, why try to write a book?

One can be forgiven for speculating as to what might have happened to our thirteen colonies if George Washington had been murdered in the conspiracy detailed in this excellent work by Brad Meltzer. What might be even more salient, however, is what America did become because the great man was NOT murdered. Much of what America has become is owed to those who stopped the plot to assassinate the father of our country.Imagine yourself as a writer. Now, assume you have stumbled across some disjointed information that indicates an attempt to kidnap or murder the one key figure in America's quest for self-governance. What would you do?Brad Meltzer probably has a little more backbone than most of us. As for myself, I might have entertained the thought to try writing a novel on the topic. With novels, people are more forgiving than with nonfiction. But, honestly, I probably would have given up after fifty or so pages.So, I bought Meltzer's book, including the Audible Whispersync edition so I could listen to it when actually reading was not possible. How was it?Excellent. From the get-go I was fascinated by the prospect, if not so thrilled with some of the early statements.What I mean is that, early on, (for just one example), Meltzer states:'...This small, inexperienced, poorly equipped group of soldiers needs to stand up to what is probably the biggest and most powerful military force in the world. By any normal measure, they don’t stand a chance—and Washington knows this, just as he knows that with every decision he makes, thousands of young soldiers’ lives could be lost...'Meltzer, Brad. The First Conspiracy (pp. 1-2). Flatiron Books. Kindle Edition.So, why does this bug me? Perspective. Through eight years of conflict, the total number who were killed by the fighting was 8,000. Yes, that is thousands, but is far less than one might suppose. When Meltzer stresses thousand of young soldiers lives could be lost, I imagine, readers are likely to conjure up far larger numbers in their minds.Yes, I know I am being a bit picky. I am merely trying to show how this otherwise terrific history falls short of being a great story for us today.The writing and editing are good.BOTTOM LINEI highly recommend this book for anyone interested in American colonial history. Remember to get the Audible edition and listen to it with you kids and/or parents.Four stars out of five.

Just finished Brad Meltzer’s latest novel “The First Conspiracy”. Instead of reading as a novel like his earlier books, it is a disjointed repetitive history book. In an attempt to make the book authentic, he uses quotes and turns around and rewrites the essence of quote. He keeps repeating the nature of his characters. I truly enjoyed his earlier books and was looking forward to this book. I am very disappointed with it.
