About the Author

Kathleen Dodge Doherty is a San Francisco–based freelance writer, adventurer, and lover of all things outdoorsy and literary. For more than two decades, Kathleen has been writing, editing, and reading about San Francisco―climbing hills, downing burritos, paying too much for coffee, and ferreting out speakeasies in the name of research. She is the author (with Jordan Summers) of Day & Section Hikes: John Muir Trail (Menasha Ridge Press) and has also written for Fodor’s, Lonely Planet, Moon Handbooks, Afar Magazine, AAA Via Magazine, and many websites. A one-time researcher, developer, and leader of bicycling and hiking tours worldwide, Kathleen largely runs after her kids and jumps in local puddles these days. A swashbuckler at heart, Kathleen is continually surprised by the never-ending treasures that await in her city by the bay. Tom Downs grew up in the Santa Clara Valley, south of San Francisco. He has lived in Los Angeles, New York City, Oakland, and Berkeley, as well as in Chinatown and the MissionDistrict in San Francisco. He is a travel writer who has authored books and articles about New Orleans, Hanoi, and the West of Ireland for Lonely Planet, BBC Studios, and a host of magazines, newspapers, and websites. His photography has appeared in publications including National Geographic and The New York Times. In 2007 his post-Katrina Lonely Planet New Orleans was honored with the Lowell Thomas Award, granted by the Society of American Travel Writers, for Best Guidebook.

Fisherman’s Wharf From Crab Traps to Tourist Traps: Maritime History Along the Waterfront BOUNDARIES: Beach St., Jefferson St., Grant Ave., Aquatic Park DISTANCE: 3 miles DIFFICULTY: Easy PARKING: Off-street parking is available at Anchorage Square, corner of Leavenworth and Beach Sts. Most street parking is metered 7 days a week. On side streets south of Bay St. you might find unmetered street parking, limited to 2 hours for nonresidents (on Sunday you can park for an unlimited time in these zones). PUBLIC TRANSIT: Powell–Mason cable car; F streetcar; 47 Muni bus Most San Franciscans roll their eyes at the thought of walking through Fisherman’s Wharf, but this is because they equate it with mass-produced T-shirts, overpriced waffle cones, and tacky tourist schlock. And while all of this does exist along the quay, you’ll also find a rich history of Italian and Chinese immigrants, a still-vibrant fishing trade, fascinating museums, and some unexpected surprises lurking beneath the surface. From penny arcades to submarines to barking seals―not to mention the gorgeous views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz―the area is not without merit if you’re willing to look for the worthwhile sights. Further, to understand San Francisco is to understand how Fisherman’s Wharf came to be in the first place. So while street hawkers pitching soup in a bread bowl and wax museums lend an air of inauthenticity, there’s actually quite a bit of genuine San Francisco hiding in plain sight here. Walk Description Start at Longshoremen’s Hall, a homely but historical structure at the corner of Mason and Beach Streets. It houses the headquarters of the International Longshoremen’s and Warehousemen’s Union. Bodies outlined on the sidewalk suggest that this corner was a crime scene, but these figures are tributes to the striking longshoremen who were shot by police in the general strike of 1934. The riot and shootings took place not here but at the corner of Mission and Steuart Streets, where the Coast Seamen’s Union kept its offices. A significant historic event did take place in this building in January 1966, when the Trips Festival was held here. The three-day event, organized by Ken Kesey (who penned One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest), rock promoter Bill Graham, and others, ushered in the hippie era. Entertainment was provided by the Grateful Dead, Big Brother and the Holding Company, light shows, and a “stroboscopic trampolinist” who hopped up and down while a strobe light flickered on him. The real point of the festival was to drop acid, and some 6,000 people showed up to do just that. Take a look through the plate-glass windows and imagine the place full of wigged-out flower children. Turn right onto Beach Street, take a left on Stockton Street, and cross the Embarcadero to enter Pier 39. This open-air shopping center is about as touristy as it gets, with businesses obviously preying upon impulsive shoppers. One attraction that is heads above, however, is the Smithsonian affiliate Aquarium of the Bay, which features a walk-through fish tunnel and touch pools. If you’re not checking out marine life, then head straight to the San Francisco Carousel, a handcrafted classic, made in Italy. Horses and chariots rotate around a mechanical organ in the center, while hand-painted San Francisco scenes decorate the top. Rides cost $5. (Interestingly, when Pier 39 first opened, there was a diving pool where the carousel sits, and sometimes it was filled with Jell-O for various games.) When you reach the end of the pier, turn left to pay a visit to K Dock, where a small colony of raucous California sea lions overtook a row of boat docks in 1990. The colony quickly grew, and now as many as 1,000 barking sea lions compete for space on the docks on a winter’s day. In summer, most of them migrate to warmer waters to breed, but a few usually haul out here year-round. They’re rightly the biggest attraction on Pier 39. Exiting the pier, turn right onto the Embarcadero (which feeds into Jefferson Street), and walk two blocks until you see and smell Boudin Bakery. The modern building is nothing much to look at, but the company has been providing the city with sourdough bread since 1849, and some of its “mother dough” is said to have been carried over from the first batch, surviving in the fog-cooled air. Veer right onto Pier 45, and allow yourself to be drawn into the magical penny arcade Musée Mécanique, the undeniable hidden gem of Fisherman’s Wharf. For some, it’s the only excuse to venture into this part of town. It’s the private collection of the late Edward Galland Zelinsky, consisting of mechanical amusements and games, mostly from the early 20th century. Risqué mutoscope moving pictures (mostly of women showing their ankles), player pianos, and old-fashioned black-and-white photo booths will easily suck the quarters out of your pockets. Save a few coins for the real showstoppers―automated displays of carnivals and circuses, toothpick Ferris wheels, and even a Chinese opium den with a dragon that peeps out from behind a curtain. Be sure to pump some quarters into Laffin’ Sal to keep her howling. Her belly laughs are infectious or terrifying, depending on your sensibilities. Some of the one-of-a-kind machines here are fine works of folk art. Exit through the back doors onto the waterfront, where the sight of a submarine and a Liberty-class ship from World War II will tell you you’re on the right track. The submarine is the USS Pampanito, which patrolled the Pacific during the latter half of the war. For 20 smackers, you can board the sub to see how uncomfortable life beneath the waves must have been, and to puzzle over the state-of-the art technology of a bygone era. The Liberty ship is the SS Jeremiah O’Brien, a cargo-carrying vessel that delivered supplies to Normandy on D-Day. Fully outfitted and in working order, it was used to shoot scenes from Titanic, among others. For an additional $20, you can climb aboard―we suggest heading straight for the engine room for an astonishing view of the ship’s awesome 2,700-horsepower, triple-expansion steam engine....

I lounged in my hammock and read this from cover to cover. In addition to choice walks of SF, you get a good idea of some of the history. Well written, and the tours look great. I'm relying on this as my itinerary, I hope it works out. There's always museums on a rainy day.

I've always loved SF. My grandmother grew up there. She left at age 20 after the 1906 earthquake. SF is a great city to walk in. This book breaks down pretty much the whole city into bite size walks which you could combine if so inclined. It gives history, out of the way places, and a lot of eating and drinking places to explore. Also, included are shopping ideas. At the beginning of each chapter it gives a distance and rates the walks from easy to strenuous to help you decide which one(s) you'd like to take.

Great book that combines points of interest with food hot spots and adds some great sidebars about cultural happenings on the walks. The one criticism I have is the maps for some walks would benefit from additional detail (more street names and more detail about hiking paths through parks). I've also spotted a couple of directional errors (the book says turn right, but really you should turn left) which are somewhat of an issue if you're relying on the book for directions and you're not a San Franciscan. These quibbles aside, this book is a must for anyone wanting to get a sense for the real San Francisco.

Great book. I love to walk and I did most of the walks in this book. My only recommendation would be to make it in a format that i could hold in my hand while walking, which is what I did, but it was awkward. A long thin ring-bound book would be perfect.

Loved all the ideas and Loved San Francisco period. So much to explore and so many places to go. I definitely recommend this book.

Interesting book with very helpful info - gave me an overview of the San Francisco area, helping me make the most of my time there. Found just a couple of errors, pointing me in the wrong direction in the Nob Hill section.

Useful

I bought this book to check out San Francisco attractions. It's not what I expected but if you're looking for step by step, turn by turn, street by street walking directions, this is the book for you!

Deer Hunting for Kids (Into the Great Outdoors), by Matt Chandler

From School Library Journal

Gr 3-5-Despite repeated references to the "thrill of the hunt" in Deer and descriptive opening scenarios in every volume, these introductions for young anglers and hunters (Camping is the odd title out) fail to provoke real enthusiasm or provide sufficiently specific information. Though the color photos do show young people of both sexes in camouflage or blaze orange vests armed with guns, bows, or fishing rods as appropriate, the texts are skimpy. For example, in Deer readers are encouraged to field dress their kills but are not shown how, and in Bowhunting prospective hunters are left to guess what a "string silencer" might be. Coverage is not systematic either: a list of bow-hunted animals includes bears(!) but not fish even though fish are mentioned later, and the techniques in Fishing do not include fly fishing.α(c) Copyright 2011. Lobster Roll   There are many ways to make a lobster roll. This one is straightforward, with no mucking about—the point is to be able to taste the lobster, the distinct sweet flavor of which is also subtle and shouldn’t get lost among stronger flavors or too much mayonnaise. It is important to use New England–style hot-dog buns. These soft, straightsided, flat-bottomed rolls are ideal for buttering and toasting on both sides, which lends a lot of flavor and texture to the lobster roll.   MAKES 6 SANDWICHES 2 pounds cooked lobster meat, coarsely chopped 3 tablespoons chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley 3 tablespoons coarsely chopped fresh celery leaves About ¾ cup mayonnaise 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature 6 New England–style hot-dog buns 6 large butter (Bibb) lettuce leaves   1 In a bowl, combine the lobster meat, parsley, and celery leaves. Add half of the mayonnaise, fold gently to combine, and taste. The lobster should be the predominant flavor, but there should be (just) enough mayonnaise to hold the ingredients together; add more mayonnaise if necessary.   2 Spread the butter on both sides of the hot-dog buns. In a large sauté pan over medium heat, toast the buns, turning once, until deeply browned on both sides, about 2 minutes per side. Lay a lettuce leaf inside each bun and divide the lobster mixture evenly among them. Serve right away.

I absolutely love this pattern book. There are pages and pages of a variety of sizes and shapes of flowers leaves, and berries. They are easy to copy and mix and match. There are a lot of colorful examples of designs. I'm so glad I bought this book. It's very inspiring!

This book just lifted my spirits when I browsed the designs! Better than chocolate, the designs offer a flexibility of creativity for the new quilter/appliquer. Explicit and easy directions are given for mixing designs and patterns to make wall quilts or bed quilts. The flowers, vines and berries are appliqued with exhuberant brightly patterned colored fabrics, not giving heed to consistent perfection, but instead to freedom of creativity with constant attention to FLOW. Definitely different than standard boxed-in blocked quilts, this book should inspire any quilter to break out and have fun creating. Designs are spin-offs of the ancient English art of Jacobean embroidery, which was used in clothing, bed covererings, cushions, etc. The patterns (28 included) are actual size printed on glossy paper. The gallery of pictures is a class act. No boundaries!!!!

I love this book! It is hard to find good applique designs and these are clearly illustrated, good directions and wonderful patterns. I can't wait to begin!

Just what I wanted.

some really pretty designs

There are alot of ways to incorporate the designs in this book. You can use them individually for smaller projects, or combine them for larger quilts, wall hangings, etc. I have begun working on one smaller design and am very happy with the outcome this far.

Great applique book. Love Jacobean style.

Love this book

I am a grown-up, but I still love reading children picture book, because I like to observe and learning new painting style. I collect the one that I think it is beautiful and special.

My kids love this s story. Nice abbreviation of the movie.Great for sisters. And a nice example of sister being nice to each other

My daughter's fav book! Can't go wrong with two Frozen books in one! She actually LOST this at school and was devastated that she couldn't find it despite her name being in it! She found it and all was well in the world again! If you got a "FROZEN" lover, it's a great stocking stuffer for Christmas!

While not as visually stunning as "A Sister More Like Me" or as thorough a telling as the "Frozen Little Golden Book", this is still a fun read. Some kids may get a kick out of being able to turn the book around to read the other story.

Bought as gift. Niece loved it.

My daughters love this book! It's really cute and has adorable illustrations! They thought it was fun that you could flip the book over and read a different story.

As a designer, I bought this for me for inspirational reference...but my kids love it too. They love that they can flip it over to read a different story on the other side.I will say that the storyline overly-simplifies the Frozen story, leaving out rather significant elements. But my kids don't care and neither do I.

Perfect bedtime stories for your little princess who is obsessed with all things frozen. The story simplified, and told from both sisters point of view. The illustration is wonderful and the perfect length for bed/nap time. Tons of stickers to share as well. This was a hit with my four year and a decently challenging read for her 8 year old friend.

This is a very useful book if you have served in the military as a pilot seeking a new life in a civilian airline company, or at least finished your studies in the aviation school with the flight license in your hands, because in the interview they will ask you all the technical questions you can find in this book.If you are a newbie in the aviation field, however, beseeching an opportunity to get in a civilian airline that provides aviation school education and training programs, you will hardly find any useful interview question examples in this book for you. In that case, you rather wanna prepare to answer why you choose that specific airline among many different companies and how long you are meaning to commit yourself for the company once they spend resources to educate and train you. And if you get accepted, so your company sends you to the aviation school after all, then you could use this book as a reference book for your studies in the school. All in all the book is intriguing for anyone interested in aviation. In this book you will find a lot of technical terms along with all the important physical and aeronautical information you need to know if you ever wanna fly your plane.

Yes, it is kinda' dry, but technical material often is. The book is a fine reference and is best used that way. Study it per the old college method: Skim the material, form questions, read in more detail, and then review. Don't do that all in one sitting either. Take notes and limit the focus time to allow things to sink in. Taken that way, the book is useful and should help anyone planning to take the pilot's exam, as I am.

Book is garbage in my opinion. Full of errors, inaccuracies, poorly written answers, and large errors even in the beginning section about abbreviations and acronyms. A number of errors and inaccuracies that you would NEVER want to mention or repeat in any airline interview in my opinion. Learning is largely “garbage in garbage out” and many of this book’s answers and explanations are just that. Recommend you stay far, FAR away. For a comprehensive review for interview prep or just as a reference get ‘Everything Explained for the Professional Pilot’ (kindle/iOS or paperback) or the Turbine Pilot’s Flight Manual (also good, if a little bit generalized) for accurate, reliable information.Or best yet just read Aerodynamics for Naval Aviators, the Instrument Procedures Handbook, and Aviation Weather (00-6b) if you start preparing early enough and those books are free from the FAA.

Liked it very much. Sometimes go too specific and sometimes too broad on topics though. It is a great reading as a whole.I wish I could download the PDF file and have it with me, not using through the web to read it, didn't like that, honestly. If I get to buy another book from Amazon and I have to use the web I rather prefer to order the hard cover version, Best Luck on the reading

Recommended by a precious applicant. It definitely helped. I did not ace the test, but I passed.

This book covers many of the essential topics but has some serious and simply incorrect descriptions. Its good for getting a general refresher but you need to be aware and able to Identity the faulty ones

Great study tool whether you're getting ready for an interview or a checkride

Great info! Hghly recommend in addition to any other test preparation you may be using already. Remember, you only get one shot at the job of your dreams in the airline industry. Do what it takes to get the competitive edge!

#3,466 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

The first book in this series, The Paper Magician, was so refreshingly imaginative, with such a bright and unique heroine, that I read it one sitting. Unfortunately, The Glass Magician was not as satisfying. Waaaaay to much "he loves me, he loves me not." And why did the intelligent heroine from book one spend the second book lurching from one stupid decision to another? Plus, the author really needs to brush up on the use of the past tense and past participle forms of intransitive verbs.

I really wanted this book to be better than it was. I loved the original concept in the first book, the hint of romance, and the adventure (although that trip through the heart was looooong). I was looking forward to more complex ideas about being a paper magician, the development of the main female character, and maybe more development of other characters, too. However, I had to struggle through an unnecessary series of selfish decisions that puts everyone at risk searching for Ceony. Sheʻs supposed to be a hard-working, intelligent young woman, but she takes stupid risks and goes on and on about her crush throughout the book. I felt her character had the opportunity to grow, get stronger, and hone her craft, but instead she gets lucky against some brutal bad guys while having a teenage crush. Not going to read the last book, as Iʻve just lost interest and ceased caring about Ceony.

The Glass Magician picks up shortly after the events of the first book, and we once again follow Ceony Twill through her apprenticeship with Emory Thane, The Paper Magician. Ceony's feelings for Thane have blossomed into a love that she eventually convinces herself to be one-sided. Her feelings for Thane become her mind's preoccupation, and the lovesick internal monologue grows a bit tedious. The only thing that distracts Ceony from her pining are the very imminent death threats and attempts on her life. (For my full review click here: http://bit.ly/1tK8Hkd)Ceony used unique and ethically questionable magic to stop the Excisioner, Lira, in the first story. Now Lira's comrades have made it their purpose to force the spell's reversal out of Ceony, and then kill her. This is the main action of the story, and it introduces some very interesting details about Holmberg's magical world. I particularly liked learning about Gaffers. However, Ceony's decision making in this story is borderline illogical. I understood what was written, in terms of her motivation, but I completely disagree with the destructive decisions she makes. Her insecurity about Thane's feelings for her, and an apparent desire to play the lone wolf and sacrificial lamb is entirely unnecessary. Her inexplicable inability to communicate isn't brave and romantic; it's rash and destructive. There's too much sentimentalism, and while I feel like Holmberg wants Ceony to be a strong female character, all of Ceony's big acts of decisiveness and sacrifice simply result in her needing to be saved or getting others killed. She's reckless, and even though we know she is smart and quick thinking, (exemplified by what she does in the climax of the story), all of her actions leading to that point aren't consistent with those character traits, and instead become the result of her extreme emotional reactions.

I was deeply uncomfortable with Saraj's character. As the only PoC explicitly stated as such, he was incredibly villainized. And a huge part of his characterization was on his skin color, which was emphasized frequently. There was even a line where the author seemed to recognize that this was a wrong thing to do, where the MC stated it was wrong to make judgements like this, but did it anyway. And then had their racism legitimized! And make no mistake- this character is explicitly mentioned as standing out bc he is the only dark skinned person in the area. He's given a name that sticks out as a very "Arabian name" and is ambiguously brown. He's also characterized like an animal. There's not really any rhyme or reason to why he does what he does, even though Ceony tries to figure out everyone else's motivation. In light of the extreme islamophobia and overt racism against PoC, and the specific and deep rooted type of racism that characterizes Middle Eastern cultures as violent and vicious animals, I think Saraj's character was a poor choice all around. And unnecessary as a blonde haired blue eyed white guy could have been just as scary. The rest of the writing was good, even if it was a bit heteronormative and odd about the girl's and "opposite gendered" apprenticeship and "liberal skirts" and whatnot--something the authorities out of their way to point out.

I read the first book in the series and gave it three stars. I liked it enough to try the second, and the outcome is the same. I will read the third, but again this book is just okay. I like it more than the first and I'm glad there is no odd heart business, although there are plenty of references to it if you need them.I don't feel that Ceony grows as a character. She still continues to learn quickly, which adds no intrigue or conflict, and while her love to Emery grows so does the annoyance in hearing about it. She speaks way to much about her feeling for him and doesn't seem focused on much else at times. I suppose it reflects that she is still a young women but it gets a little tedious.I like the introduction of Delilah and more appearances by other magicians. However because the narrative is focused from the perspective of the young apprentice you don't get perspective from true magicians, which I think would add more intrigue to the story. The conflict with Grath was good and felt justified, but Saraj felt forced the entire time and didn't add any element of surprise or suspense for me, with the exception of the one Emery focused chapter at the end. I wish the series was told from his perspective more often.Overall it was okay. I still plan to read the third because I'm curious to see how this series ends.
