This is a very useful book if you have served in the military as a pilot seeking a new life in a civilian airline company, or at least finished your studies in the aviation school with the flight license in your hands, because in the interview they will ask you all the technical questions you can find in this book.If you are a newbie in the aviation field, however, beseeching an opportunity to get in a civilian airline that provides aviation school education and training programs, you will hardly find any useful interview question examples in this book for you. In that case, you rather wanna prepare to answer why you choose that specific airline among many different companies and how long you are meaning to commit yourself for the company once they spend resources to educate and train you. And if you get accepted, so your company sends you to the aviation school after all, then you could use this book as a reference book for your studies in the school.All in all the book is intriguing for anyone interested in aviation. In this book you will find a lot of technical terms along with all the important physical and aeronautical information you need to know if you ever wanna fly your plane.

Yes, it is kinda' dry, but technical material often is. The book is a fine reference and is best used that way. Study it per the old college method: Skim the material, form questions, read in more detail, and then review. Don't do that all in one sitting either. Take notes and limit the focus time to allow things to sink in. Taken that way, the book is useful and should help anyone planning to take the pilot's exam, as I am.

Book is garbage in my opinion. Full of errors, inaccuracies, poorly written answers, and large errors even in the beginning section about abbreviations and acronyms. A number of errors and inaccuracies that you would NEVER want to mention or repeat in any airline interview in my opinion. Learning is largely “garbage in garbage out” and many of this book’s answers and explanations are just that. Recommend you stay far, FAR away.For a comprehensive review for interview prep or just as a reference get ‘Everything Explained for the Professional Pilot’ (kindle/iOS or paperback) or the Turbine Pilot’s Flight Manual (also good, if a little bit generalized) for accurate, reliable information.Or best yet just read Aerodynamics for Naval Aviators, the Instrument Procedures Handbook, and Aviation Weather (00-6b) if you start preparing early enough and those books are free from the FAA.

Liked it very much. Sometimes go too specific and sometimes too broad on topics though. It is a great reading as a whole.I wish I could download the PDF file and have it with me, not using through the web to read it, didn't like that, honestly. If I get to buy another book from Amazon and I have to use the web I rather prefer to order the hard cover version, Best Luck on the reading

The first book in this series, The Paper Magician, was so refreshingly imaginative, with such a bright and unique heroine, that I read it one sitting. Unfortunately, The Glass Magician was not as satisfying. Waaaaay to much "he loves me, he loves me not." And why did the intelligent heroine from book one spend the second book lurching from one stupid decision to another? Plus, the author really needs to brush up on the use of the past tense and past participle forms of intransitive verbs.

I really wanted this book to be better than it was. I loved the original concept in the first book, the hint of romance, and the adventure (although that trip through the heart was looooong). I was looking forward to more complex ideas about being a paper magician, the development of the main female character, and maybe more development of other characters, too. However, I had to struggle through an unnecessary series of selfish decisions that puts everyone at risk searching for Ceony. Sheʻs supposed to be a hard-working, intelligent young woman, but she takes stupid risks and goes on and on about her crush throughout the book. I felt her character had the opportunity to grow, get stronger, and hone her craft, but instead she gets lucky against some brutal bad guys while having a teenage crush. Not going to read the last book, as Iʻve just lost interest and ceased caring about Ceony.

The Glass Magician picks up shortly after the events of the first book, and we once again follow Ceony Twill through her apprenticeship with Emory Thane, The Paper Magician. Ceony's feelings for Thane have blossomed into a love that she eventually convinces herself to be one-sided. Her feelings for Thane become her mind's preoccupation, and the lovesick internal monologue grows a bit tedious. The only thing that distracts Ceony from her pining are the very imminent death threats and attempts on her life. (For my full review click here: http://bit.ly/1tK8Hkd)Ceony used unique and ethically questionable magic to stop the Excisioner, Lira, in the first story. Now Lira's comrades have made it their purpose to force the spell's reversal out of Ceony, and then kill her. This is the main action of the story, and it introduces some very interesting details about Holmberg's magical world. I particularly liked learning about Gaffers.However, Ceony's decision making in this story is borderline illogical. I understood what was written, in terms of her motivation, but I completely disagree with the destructive decisions she makes. Her insecurity about Thane's feelings for her, and an apparent desire to play the lone wolf and sacrificial lamb is entirely unnecessary. Her inexplicable inability to communicate isn't brave and romantic; it's rash and destructive.There's too much sentimentalism, and while I feel like Holmberg wants Ceony to be a strong female character, all of Ceony's big acts of decisiveness and sacrifice simply result in her needing to be saved or getting others killed. She's reckless, and even though we know she is smart and quick thinking, (exemplified by what she does in the climax of the story), all of her actions leading to that point aren't consistent with those character traits, and instead become the result of her extreme emotional reactions.

I was deeply uncomfortable with Saraj's character. As the only PoC explicitly stated as such, he was incredibly villainized. And a huge part of his characterization was on his skin color, which was emphasized frequently. There was even a line where the author seemed to recognize that this was a wrong thing to do, where the MC stated it was wrong to make judgements like this, but did it anyway. And then had their racism legitimized! And make no mistake- this character is explicitly mentioned as standing out bc he is the only dark skinned person in the area. He's given a name that sticks out as a very "Arabian name" and is ambiguously brown. He's also characterized like an animal. There's not really any rhyme or reason to why he does what he does, even though Ceony tries to figure out everyone else's motivation. In light of the extreme islamophobia and overt racism against PoC, and the specific and deep rooted type of racism that characterizes Middle Eastern cultures as violent and vicious animals, I think Saraj's character was a poor choice all around. And unnecessary as a blonde haired blue eyed white guy could have been just as scary.The rest of the writing was good, even if it was a bit heteronormative and odd about the girl's and "opposite gendered" apprenticeship and "liberal skirts" and whatnot--something the authorities out of their way to point out.

I read the first book in the series and gave it three stars. I liked it enough to try the second, and the outcome is the same. I will read the third, but again this book is just okay. I like it more than the first and I'm glad there is no odd heart business, although there are plenty of references to it if you need them.I don't feel that Ceony grows as a character. She still continues to learn quickly, which adds no intrigue or conflict, and while her love to Emery grows so does the annoyance in hearing about it. She speaks way to much about her feeling for him and doesn't seem focused on much else at times. I suppose it reflects that she is still a young women but it gets a little tedious.I like the introduction of Delilah and more appearances by other magicians. However because the narrative is focused from the perspective of the young apprentice you don't get perspective from true magicians, which I think would add more intrigue to the story.The conflict with Grath was good and felt justified, but Saraj felt forced the entire time and didn't add any element of surprise or suspense for me, with the exception of the one Emery focused chapter at the end. I wish the series was told from his perspective more often.Overall it was okay. I still plan to read the third because I'm curious to see how this series ends.

Excellent! We made a game out of using these cards to help our son with the memorization and speed. He REALLY wants a dirt bike....he has to EARN the $ to buy it....so, he gets $1 for every 10 cards he gets correct! He got so excited and LOVES doing it! He has improved greatly very quickly and is finally MOTIVATED! He is working his way very quickly to getting that bike! LOL

1 star for the too graphic description! I'm still having trouble with that! The author and the story is too good for what I feel she used for shock value. Just my opinion. I'm having second and third thoughts about buying the next book. The first third of the book is what Madison had to do as a new employee. I didn't feel we needed to know all the training aspects in such detail. I usually complain that there is not enough detail but this was a bit much. Again, my opinion. The plot itself is great! Lots of action and romance. The brotherhood line is always wonderful. 4 stars on the plot itself! I enjoyed seeing Madison and Cooper grow in emotional strength and as a couple.

Fast paced, great romance. Look forward to seeing everyone again in book 3 and4.. Great character development in this series.

The first female operative is hired, and she is the perfect mix of strong and capable while inside being vulnerable and self doubting. I thought the author nailed what a woman experiences internally when vying to be seen as equal. The relationship between Cooper and Madison develops slowly as they both fight what they feel is an inappropriate attraction. I really enjoy all the characters and I feel invested in all of their lives. I'm normally used to and prefer sexual encounters to be more explicit rather than implied but the lack of this didn't detract from the story. I'm looking forward to the next books.

Love this series, well written with great character's, suspense, great love story, can't wait to read the next in the series.

This collection of stories is one of the oddest I have ever encountered. Ever.Lawrence Millman uses the mythology of Eskimos and the frozen arctic atmosphere to probe human taboos and make a parody of human fears--but he does it with such a skillful syntax and understanding of the human imagination that it is impossible to turn away.These are basically horror stories without the conventional trappings. One man slowly turns into an octopus like creature and strangles his progeny just to add to his own inner strength. A mother who is a mythological monster drowns herself. The average reader will find these offensive; they are offensive in a deep, unremitting way. But they are also art, or anti art. Recommended.

A great collection of unique tales from the north. Some of the English could be better, but that's overcome by the excellent storytelling.

They are derived from a remote land and a highly imaginative oral tradition.To give you an idea, some of the specific stories describe men who marry rocks and old people who marry insects, children who grow antlers, children who eat their parents, animals who steal body parts from human corpses and women with iron tails.This collection is a great read, (...and not for the queasy).Highly recommended for any kayakers with a fascination for Greenland and Innuit history & culture

I was just reminded of this after reading a scatological posting on a peculiarly narrowly targeted Web site. This book is a phenomenal journey through the dark side of the human psyche, and--as may be expected--its concepts of "mythology" are anything but mainstream. Do not expect pantheons of radiant beings eating grapes and enjoying sexual delights or, for that matter, defeatist gods fighting giants while continually fearing the end of days (particularly after Odin slays Gullveig with Gungnir and Loki eats her heart). Neither should you expect "standard" story lines, such as Theseus slaying the Minotaur or Thor battling Jormungandr: stick to Padraic Colum and his Beardsleyesque drawing buddy, Willy Pogany, for that sort of thing. The character of myths ranges from scatological to sexual ("swinging," even) to necrophiliacal to cannibalistic to unclassifiable. Unfortunately, since so many of the myths are eponymously yclept for their protagonists, their names are utterly forgettable--Kiviarssuq and Aaqaqoq and Nuqtiluq, perhaps. One aspect I could not understand was that the overwhelming majority of the stories were not of the etiologic character that underlies the lion's share of, say, the Greek and Norse and Hindu traditions. To that extent, they could just as easily be taxonomized as mere folktales--with all that that implies and all that that fails to imply--revelatory of the shockingly limited range of the grossly vulgar colloquial Inuit mindset. (Fine, call me ethnocentric if you like: call me anything but late for dinner.) Just expect to be shocked senseless by jaw-dropping behaviors from weird people. The author offers us an unwitting foretaste of what lies ahead while talking of his visit to an Inuit friend, who was busily snacking on caribou droppings fried in seal fat, or regaling us with the compositions of other Inuit culinary delights, including odobenid vesica (that sounds so much more appetizing than "walrus bladder": you might even think it's a type of rare vegetable) swimming in saliva. There's more oddball material here than you can cut with an ulu!

Exemplary story-telling. The Inuit storytellers who created these tales made them to be re-told, to be laughed at, gasped at, wondered at, by ordinary people. Millman has done a service to readers. The ghosts of the original Inuit storytellers are undoubtedly more gratified by Millman joyfully sharing these tales with you and I, than by university libraries full of unreadable line-by-line literal translations prefaced with lengthy ethnographic "context." These stories can speak for themselves, and Millman allows them that.I prize my rare and expensive academic Inuit ethnographies. But I simply love reading this book. These stories were meant to be enjoyed and shared, not just stuffed and cataloged.JNH

Perhaps retelling the violence and "perversions" of their myths and stories is one reason these people are so gentle and considerate in actual life, a lesson lost on Puritan America.

About the Author

Terry E. Miller began visiting covered bridges with his father, Max T. Miller, in 1953 and has since visited more than 1,000 in the United States, Canada, Europe, and China, and researched the bridges of two Ohio counties from dusty handwritten journals. Miller spent his career teaching ethnomusicology at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, retiring in 2005. In addition to his research and writings on the music of mainland Southeast Asia, he is the co-author of the popular textbook World Music: A Global Journey.Ronald G. Knapp is a historical-cultural geographer at State University of New York at New Paltz, where he taught from 1968 to 2001. For the past forty-five years, his research has focused on China's frontier history and Chinese vernacular architecture with many books that celebrate these traditions. His book, Chinese Bridges: Living Architecture from China's Past introduced China's covered bridges to Western readers and has served as the model for America's Covered Bridges: Practical Crossings—Nostalgic Icons.

Reference books on covered bridges have been produced from the 1930s (when only a few people were interested) through today. A growing segment of the population has an interest in covered bridges now, due in part to the efforts of many previous authors, though most of the previous literature has been more oriented toward either the scenic value of the bridges or in providing images with a brief history or the locality details to encourage tourism of the bridges. Terry and Ron have achieved something rarely accomplished in this area by elevating the discussion on covered bridges to include much more information on truss types, terminology, evolution of design, and recognition of the relationship of covered bridges to their uncovered wood cousins.Despite the added focus on history of these bridges, there is also an abundance of high quality images provided. The new photography in the book is stunning. These images are blended with a large amount of historical imagery, something on the order of 550 historic photos, drawings, and etchings are included.This book is a delight to an advanced "bridger" and would also be an excellent way for almost anyone interested in covered bridges to elevate their level of understanding of this American icon.

This is a beautiful book, well-written with great photography. It is a book to return to, time after time to look at pictures and to learn from the practical and historical writing about covered bridges. The eye-catching photos will make this an ideal coffee-table book, but the wealth of information will sustain your interest for years.The authors have organized their book into "broadly conceived perspectives of the covered bridge as utilitarian objects, indicators of technological ingenuity and progress, obsolete nuisances, and nostalgic icons and symbols of the past." The book lives up to this daunting challenge and does so with engaging language, striking a balance between "erudite academic" and "down home." For me, the pictures and descriptions reveal a love of the subject matter. I was particularly taken with the speculative theories about how the bridges were constructed. People have wondered for centuries about how the pyramids were constructed and how Michelangelo painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. In an investigative spirit the authors present alternative ideas on how covered bridges could have been constructed long distances over rivers. The deductive reasoning from known facts and evidence to a reasonable theory guides the reader to a conclusion, with just the right amount of "ah ha" combined with skeptical insight.This book holds fascination for all types of readers. Casual readers may just want to browse the pictures while industrious readers will find descriptions and contemporary issues to ponder. In particular, chapter Five: Finding a Place for Covered Bridges in the Twenty-First Century grapples with combining nostalgia and historic preservation with the need for safety and practical use in a time of bigger and heavier vehicles.This is a book to be enjoyed and from which readers will learn.

This is an excellent book for covered bridge enthusiasts who love the old bridges. The author did a lot of research and had produced a superb account of them in this book. I highly recommend it!

Be assured that few will emerge from their encounter with this thoroughly engrossing book without having formed a friendship with covered bridges that could well lead to further exploration.Co-authors Terry Miller and Ronald Knapp present a treasury of information via their absolutely engaging, fluent style, amply supported by the exquisite photography of A. Chester Ong, along with a wealth of diagrams and historic prints, the whole organized with the clarity of a well-marked highway.Cost-wise, the relatively modest price-tag of a publication that could easily command an exponentially higher amount is truly amazing.

I listened intently to stories my Mother told about growing up close to White's Bridge in Keene Township, Ionia County, Michigan. Her older brothers made a Bobsled that carried them down the steep hill onto the White's Bridge in winter. Her Aunt ,an artist, made beautiful chalk drawings of both winter and summer White's Bridge scenes. I was excited to read "America's Covered Bridges" where Terry Miller not only tells about the location of these bridges but also details about when they were built, by whom, and their construction details. I've been collecting books about covered bridges for many years, but I have never seen any that compare to the quality of _America's Covered Bridges: Practical Crossings -Nostalgic Icons_ White's Bridge, Fallasburg Bridge,and Ada Bridge in Kent County, Michigan are all part of my precious childhood memories, and through this book I have learned about so many more. This book is priceless!

What a wonderful addition for my already large collection of covered bridge books. This is a must have for anyone who loves covered bridges, whether it be for the history of them, the looks, the photographs or just to be able to drive or stroll though one of these old pieces of our past history. These gentlemen did any outstanding job with all that this book has to offer. I was amazed at how Terry Miller actually took an interest in covered bridges because of his Father's involvement with taking pictures of covered bridges when Terry was a young boy. These three men, Terry Miller, Ronald Knapp and A. Chester Ong,, in my opinion, did a great job working together, to create this wonderful book. A Job Well Done!!!
