I avoid the word "shallow" because there is nothing shallow about either his writing or his theology. Luther discovered grace in Paul's letter to the Romans, and being set free from slavery to the law (in his case, the rituals and traditions of the church), he was finally freed to become a slave of Christ, in whose finished work of propitiation, atonement and redemption he gloried. This brief preface sets the tone of the letter. I enjoyed it on its own merits, but also found it a fitting introductory reading before devouring R.C. Sproul's Faith Alone and The Truth of the Cross - and of course, re-reading the epistle to the Romans itself.
Getting Martin Luther's summary of romans in plain english is a blessing. I know understand why this summary effected Wesley so profoundly. I recommend this to anyone studying the book of Romans.
GLAD TO QUICKLY GET A CLASSIC, CHEAP
The clearest presentation of the whole of Christianity by way of walking one through the letter to the Romans, that I have ever read. Luther addresses the heart, which is the key to understanding law and grace. If our heart has not been radically changed by the Holy Spirit, then all our good works are nothing, even if the world admires us greatly. As Augustine put it, we must want to do what we ought to do, not simply do it. As 1 Samuel puts it, man looks at outward appearance and God looks at the heart.
One of the greatest moment in the history of my faith. Every Christian should read these.
John Wesley lived many years seeking to live a holy life, but it was in hearing Martin Luther's Preface to the Letter of St Paul to the Romans that his eyes were opened to his own need for the grace that comes by faith alone.I was eager to read this for myself and am delighted with this translation. As the Spirit has drawn me to desire a deeper study of Romans I will follow Luther's encouragement to give due attention to this most essential letter. How faithful is our Lord and Savior!
